  • Patent number: 6692603
Abstract: Methods are disclosed for producing absorbent articles comprising molded airlaid webs and other molded fibrous webs. The molded webs can offer improved body fit and/or improved fluid handling. Molded airlaid webs, for example, can be formed having a central longitudinal hump and flexure zones longitudinally removed from the central hump to provide good contact with the body and improved fit when the article is squeezed from the sides. Molding can be achieved when a binder material is activated by an energy source and the web is held against a molding substrate. Energy sources can include microwaves, heated air, heated metal surfaces, ultraviolet radiation, ultrasonic energy, and the like.

  • Patent number: 6548428
Abstract: The invention consists of a multilayer material and a process for manufacturing this material. The multilayer material comprises a polyester substrate which is provided with a thermoset plastic polymer coating and a layer of contact adhesive. The polymer coating is produced by a reaction between a polyurethane polymer containing hydroxyl groups and a low molecular linear polyisocyanate, with catalytic tin-organic additives and colorants. The multilayer material is resistant to tearing and is also weather-resistant. A transparent, reactive layer, consisting, for example of a layer to take toner or ink, or a metallic layer, can be deposited on the side opposite to the polymer-coated substrate. Multilayer materials of this kind are suitable for large-scale covering of supporting frameworks in the construction of model aircraft and are also suitable as a medium onto which images and print may be applied using a plain paper copier, and can also be used to carry advertising.

  • Patent number: 6495087
Abstract: A preparation of thermal contraction sleeve is disclosed. In this method, polyethylene fibers are elongated by 850%˜1,200% and are exposed to a radiation of 2.5˜3.5 Mrads, thus being cross-linked. The first surface of a fabric sheet, made of the polyethylene fibers, is exposed to a voltage of 20,000˜25,000 V while passing over a plurality of rollers, thus being modified at the first surface. A first matrix sheet, melt-extruded at a temperature of 300° C.˜380° C., is formed on the modified first surface of the fabric sheet, prior to an integration of the first matrix sheet with the modified surface of the fabric sheet. The integration is accomplished by a first elastic roller and a first cooling roller. The second surface of the fabric sheet is processed in the same manner as that described above. A second matrix sheet is layered on the modified second surface of the fabric sheet, thus forming a fabric-matrix layered body.

  • Patent number: 6217695
Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying an extrudable material to a substrate, in which a concentrated light beam is directed onto the substrate before or after the application of the extrudable material. The energy of the beam is concentrated on the substrate surface, wherein it is subsequently transferred to the extrudable material deposited on its surface, thereby increasing the temperature and lowering the viscosity of the closely situated material so as to facilitate material penetration into the substrate. This method allows the use of illumination of modest energy density, of wavelengths absorbed by the extrudable material, or of such cross-sectional extent that it may not be transmitted through the extrusion device by which the extrudable material is deposited.
