    Abstract: The present invention relates to laminate of films for applications in which relatively high yield strength and ultimate tensile strength is required. In one embodiment this is accomplished by drawing tube (106) from a storage means onto a tube roller and cutting the tube length into two film, a first film and a second film, where the first and second film are in opposite angular direction with respect to the roller rotation, coating the first film with liquid adhesive composition by passing between at least two film guiders, where one of the guider is dipped in liquid adhesive tray (110), in which said composition includes resin and hardener and laminating the second film with the coated liquid adhesive first film by passing them together through at least two film guiders (112) under pressure to produce a spiral cut liquid adhesive laminated film.

    Abstract: An adhesive roller for detritus removal having a tubular cylindrical adhesive roll formed by a plurality of overlapping spiral wound layers. Each layer has a backing substrate and an adhesive coating on an outwardly facing side of the sheet. A cover is removably disposed around and has an inner side in contact with the outermost layer of the adhesive roll. The cover has an adhesive release coating on its inner side to reduce adhesion between the cover and the outermost layer of the adhesive roll and two longitudinally extending edges positioned closely adjacent each other when the cover is disposed around the roll. The cover is formed by overlapping spiral wound strips. Additionally, a longitudinally extending adhesive retainer strip overlies the edges of the cover to detachably secure the covers together. A pull-tab is adhesively attached to one side of the retainer strip which enables the cover to be repeatedly removed from and reattached to the adhesive roll.

This process comprises slicing a free-rise bun of polyurethane foam to form a skived polyurethane foam, bonding the skived foam to a skin material to form a laminate, optionally, rolling the foam/skin laminate, thermoforming the foam/skin laminate into an instrument panel skin, positioning the instrument panel skin into the cavity of a mold, positioning a retainer into the core of the mold, adhering the retainer to the laminate by placing an adhesive film onto the retainer, closing the mold to apply heat and pressure, and removing the resultant instrument panel from the mold. Suitable polyurethane foams for the present invention may be flexible foams or semi-rigid foams. This invention also relates to the polyurethane foam backed instrument panels produced by this process.

    Abstract: Engineered structural wood products particularly useful in critical applications such as joists, headers, and beams where longer lengths, greater widths, and higher and predictable stress ratings may be required and to a method for making the wood products. Most logs by nature are radially anisotropic, having wood of higher density and stiffness in their outer portion adjacent the bark than is found in the inner portion. The logs are machined to segregate the denser, stiffer outer wood. A first generally rectangular component is formed from the less dense inner wood. Second generally rectangular components are formed from the stiffer outer wood. Second components are adhesively bonded to at least one edge of the first component, more usually to opposite edges. The stiffer wood is thus specifically placed where it will contribute most effectively to the properties of the product.

    Abstract: A method of making dual or multi-porosity porous plastic strips comprising placing a first quantity of plastic granules into a mold, and placing a second or additional quantities of plastic granules into the mold above the first quantity. The granules are subjected to heat and pressure so as to fuse them together into a self-sustaining porous plastic billet. The billet has a number of fused-together regions corresponding to the number of quantities of granules placed into the mold. The billet is sliced in a direction transverse to the planes containing the interfaces between the regions of the billet so as to create strips, each strip comprising interconnected regions have porosities which differ from one another. The mold may be cylindrical and the strip created by skiving it off the cylindrical surface of the billet.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a method of manufacturing high quality laminated veneer lumber from pre-flattened wood veneer, for such uses as in architecture and furniture, and a method of mass production thereof using veneer which is flattened in advance. A sheet of veneer is first obtained by cutting a log with a rotary lathe or the like, and flattening and cutting the veneer into a predetermined length. Sheets of veneer thus obtained are cut on both edges in the grain direction to form symmetrically diagonal end faces, and are bonded with one another at these end faces with their grain directions aligned to form an elongated sheet of veneer. The resultant elongated sheet veneer is cut into a predetermined length to form laminated veneer material having seams. Plural sheets thus formed laminated veneer material are laminated and bonded with their grain directions aligned to form laminated veneer core.

Further, a compression air feed passage is formed in the die so as to feed compressed air into the inner tube, to thereby expand it. This permits the inner tube to be contacted with the reinforcement for adhesion therebetween.

    Abstract: An image producing and transfer apparatus which utilizes a base sheet covered with a tacky adhesive which in turn is covered with a liner sheet composed of a plurality of individually removeable liner segments. Part of the apparatus includes a plurality of break-away members which are manufactured at the same time as the apparatus and of the same material of construction and the same die cutting process to become a tool in the method of this invention. Each break-away member includes a tacky adhesive surface which, when applied to the outer surface of one of the liner segments, facilitates the removal of that liner segment thereby exposing an area of the tacky adhesive which can now be covered with a particulate matter. All liner segments are removed in this manner. When all liner segments have been removed and the particulate matter applied, there remains a border segment. A liquid glue is coated onto the completed image of this particulate matter with some of this glue coating the border segment.

    Abstract: A method of manufacturing a molding material includes the steps of winding a thin metal strip on the peripheral surface of a rotary shaft a plurality of turns with a resin material being interposed between the resulting layers of metal, cutting an end surface of the metal strip and the resin material which have been wound by a cutting blade while rotating said rotary shaft to obtain a mixture of metal fibers and resin fibers, and heating the fiber mixture to a temperature at which the resin fibers can be softened. In this way, a molding material in which the metal fibers are substantially uniformly dispersed in the resin material in a closely contacted state can be obtained easily. Furthermore, the contents of the metal fibers by volume in the molding material can be arbitrarily adjusted by changing the rate at which the metal strip and the resin material are wound around the rotary shaft.

    Abstract: A method of producing laminated veneer lumber (LVL) with good dimensional stability, characterized by a particular lay-up of the veneers and the veneers being of at least two different wood species. The particular veneer lay-up and species arrangement, minimizes the tendency of warping and cracking of the LVL. All veneers are laid-up in pairs by species with the loose sides of each pair contacting each other and with the species pair sequence from face to core being identical on either side of the center ply or center line. The veneer tight faces of different species are bonded to one another. The dimensional stability of the LVL is optionally enhanced by a water repellent, flow promoter and bulking agent that is incorporated into the adhesive before application onto the veneer. The different species veneers are dried to different moisture contents before lay-up with the denser species being of lower moisture content than the less dense species.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for making a composite component. For making a non-cylindrical composite component such as a nozzle, a longitudinal winding of at least one fiber strand impregnated with resin is applied onto a generally cylindrical mandrel at a predetermined angle relative to a line parallel to the mandrel rotational axis. A transverse tape is then spirally cut from the layer and wound onto a component mandrel. The wound transverse tape is then compacted and cured and the mandrel removed. A nozzle exit cone is also disclosed made from such transverse tape so that the fiber strand portions are short enough that they do not follow the curvature of the nozzle and thereby peel. The windings are shingled onto the nozzle exit cone so that only one end of each of the fiber strand portions is exposed to the nozzle surface. The fiber strand portions are oriented at a predetermined angle which may be optimized for erosion resistance and stress requirements.

The process and apparatus allow for the substantially continuous production of a continuous sheet of foam material in roll form from a cylindrical foam body. By following the present invention, several basic operations may be performed on a foam body including inserting a supporting rod in the foam body, bringing a cutting element into contact with the foam body while it is rotating on the supporting rod, winding the resultant continuous foam sheet and returning the supporting rod back to the inserting station. The invention allows for the production of a foam roll in a substantially continuous manner with a minimum amount of labor. Furthermore, all the various operations can be controlled via suitable electrical control means, and it is preferable that all the various operations be programmed into a single control unit.

    Abstract: A high yield technique to convert normally-unusable round logs of balsa or other species of wood whose diameter is less than about 4 inches into large rectangular panels that are contourable.The raw logs are first peeled to expose the wood and are then cut into round pieces of a desired length. The pieces, after being kiln-dried, are stacked to form a dry assembly in which the pieces are separated from each other to define a matrix of intersticial spaces. The pieces in the assembly are then interlaminated in a mold by filling the matrix with an elastomeric plastic solution which, when cured, functions as an adhesive to provide an integrated stock block. The stock block is then divided into panels of the desired thickness, each panel being constituted by an array of round wood tiles joined together by elastomeric hinges, whereby the resultant panel is contourable and may be conformed to a curved surface.

    Abstract: A high-yield, low-cost technique for converting balsa wood logs into thin, flat sheets usable in model-making. In this technique, the log is first debarked and then cut to a standard bolt length. The bolt is supported for rotation in a veneer lathe which acts to peel off in spiral form a continuous web of balsa veneer. After kiln drying, dried sheets taken from this web are clipped to a usable width, the sheets at this point having a curvature as a result of their spiral memory. Then the sheets are assembled into matching pairs of opposing curvatures, each pair of sheets being laminated together in face-to-face relation to produce a two-ply flat sheet whose planarity, upon exposure, is immune to changes in relative humidity and temperature.

    Abstract: A method of making coherent optical fiber bundles and coherent optical fiber face plates. The method includes the steps of forming a laminated billet by heat and pressure from a plurality of stacked disc modules. Each disc module is defined by two transparent discs, one relatively thick and having one index of refraction and the other relatively thin and having an index of refraction less than the first. The billet is then longitudinally skived to form a veneer strip of indefinite length. The veneer is then coated on one or both faces by transparent sheets having similar optical properties, i.e., different indices of refraction, and may include a light-absorbing or light reflecting layer on one sheet. A second billet is formed and transversely cut to define a fiber optic face plate. A second billet may also be formed and skived to yield a coherent fiber optic bundle.
