  • Patent number: 9950462
Abstract: Wrinkling of supported thin films is a strain-driven phenomenon that enables scalable and low-cost fabrication of periodic micro and nano scale structures. The morphology of wrinkles depends on both the magnitude and the nature of compressive strains that are applied to the thin film. This disclosure presents the methods to fabricate asymmetric 2-D wrinkled structures using biaxial compressive strains. The method relies on the dependence of wrinkle morphology on both strains and strain paths to generate asymmetric 2D wrinkles. Asymmetry is achieved by deliberately traversing the system through a strain state that creates cracks along a preferential direction. Fabricated patterns include non-uniform zigzag wrinkles that demonstrate period doubling only along one direction.

Abstract: A method including applying layers of multiple constituents where the constituents are capable of producing a non-equilibrium condition on the contacting surfaces of a ceramic matrix composite component and a gas turbine engine component where one outer coating includes a first constituent and the other outer coating includes a second constituent; forming a component assembly with the ceramic matrix composite component coupled to the gas turbine engine component with contact between the outer coatings; adding an energy to facilitate an equilibrium reaction between the first constituent of the first outer coating and the second constituent of the second outer coating; and as a result of adding the energy, forming a bond structure in the component assembly with a product of the equilibrium reaction where the bond structure affixes the ceramic matrix composite component to the gas turbine engine component between the first constituent and the second constituent.

Abstract: A securing arrangement and method for securing a first vehicle component having a generally nonmetallic body to a second metallic vehicle component includes the first vehicle component having at least one magnet fixably secured thereto. An adhesive is applied and one or both of the first and second vehicle components are positioned relative the other of the first and second vehicle components for connecting the first and second vehicle components with the adhesive. The at least one magnet prevents relative movement between the first and second vehicle components while the adhesive cures.

  • Patent number: 8728269
Abstract: Components may be interconnected using liquid materials such as liquid adhesive and solder. To prevent undesired movement between the components during the assembly process and to prevent the liquid material from flowing into undesired areas, an attachment and dam structure may be provided. The structure may be formed from a substrate such as a flexible polymer film coated with adhesive. When interposed between first and second components, the structure attaches the first and second components and prevents movement between the first and second components. The structure may have one or more edges adjacent to the liquid material to block the liquid material from flowing while the liquid material is in its liquid state. Once the components have been connected, the liquid material can be solidified.
