  • Patent number: 5626707
Abstract: A frame, a drive mechanism for rotating a mandrel, at least two spindles mounted to the frame, a tensioner, and a belt extending between the first and second spindles may be used to roll pre-preg strips or similar sheets of composite materials around the mandrel. The belt travels over the spindles, and the spindles guide the belt through changes in its direction of travel. The mandrel is mounted in the drive mechanism in contact with the belt, which changes its direction of travel around the mandrel. The lower surface of the belt bears against upper portions of the spindles, and the mandrel contacts the upper surface of the belt. As the drive mechanism rotates the mandrel, pre-preg sheets are fed between the mandrel and the belt and are thereby wrapped around the mandrel. The belt presses the pre-preg sheets against the mandrel. The wrapped mandrel may then be removed from the apparatus and cured in any suitable manner known in the art to produce a composite tubular article.

Abstract: A control architecture involves two control loops, one for controlling heat input to a moving composite structure and the other controlling the speed of the structure to control quality of the product being formed. Since velocity and heat input affect the temperature of the composite there is cross coupling between the control loops so that either or both can be used to control the temperature. Preferably the invention uses the velocity or speed of the composite as the primary control, i.e., the controller automatically seeks the proper laydown velocity for the current heat input. If the energy source is not providing sufficient heat, the process slows down until the proper temperature is reached. This ensures that the composite material passing through the process is always at the proper temperature.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing filament-wound tubes or shafts includes drywinding a plurality of elongate mandrels with the filament, inserting the filament wound mandrels into respective elongate hollow molds of a mold complex, and injecting resin such as epoxy resin under pressure into the hollow molds into intimate contact with the filament. Heat is then supplied to the mold complex to heat the resin to a predetermined temperature and for a predetermined period of time to cure the resin and thereby form the tubes or shafts. The mandrels and tube or shafts are removed from the hollow molds and then the mandrels are removed from the tubes or shafts. Many of these activities are carried out in parallel to increase the manufacturing throughput of the tubes or shafts.

  • Patent number: 5256230
Abstract: Winding of multiple tows upon a mandrel to form a desired article, such as a tube, is assisted by passing the multiple tows in contact with an exterior surface of a guide which is heated during the winding operation. The guide includes a first guide portion and a also a second guide portion having longitudinal axes which define an angle with respect to each other. The guide is positioned so that either guide portion is capable of receiving the tows so as to contact the exterior surface of the guide before being wound upon the mandrel. Employing the heated guide in accordance with the invention has been found to assist in aligning and at least partially consolidating the tows in a side-by-side relationship for delivery to the mandrel.

  • Patent number: 5256237
Abstract: The inner surface affixation system and process is a method for affixing wound optical fibers on the inner surface of a hollow cylinder. It is useful, for example, in the manufacture of rigid mandrel-based fiber optic sensors. The optical fibers of a sensor wound on the inner surface are less susceptible to damage than are optical fibers wound on the outside of the mandrel. The process requires that the fibers be supported on a cylinder, which is coated with an adhesive and placed within the sensor mandrel cylinder, at which time the circumference of the supporting cylinder is expanded, causing the fibers to engage the inner surface of the sensor mandrel cylinder. The adhesive is then cured, holding the fibers in place on the inner surface of the sensor mandrel cylinder while the supporting cylinder is contracted and removed from the sensor mandrel cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5238520
Abstract: Disclosed is a filament winding apparatus comprising a winding mechanism having a pair of arms for winding traversed filamentary yarns impregnated with a resin onto a plurality of mandrels, respectively, and a mandrel retaining mechanism having mandrel receiving portions by a number of at least two times of the number of the mandrels to be set on the arms of the winding mechanism. The arms are swung between a winding position and a mandrel exchange position of the mandrel retaining mechanism. The retaining mechanism is a little moved when the mandrels are exchanged. A plurality of mandrels can be easily and efficiently exchanged at the same time without a particular device. The number of the mandrels for simultaneous filament winding can be increased and a high productivity can be obtained. Further, this apparatus can be realized at a relatively low cost.

  • Patent number: 5223072
Abstract: To maintain tension on a fiber tow as it travels between a spool of the tow and a fiber placement head in a computer controlled fiber placement machine, closed tension loop servo control tow velocity feed forward is provided to control spool rotation so as to not only provide closed loop tension control but to also cause rotation in anticipation of expected tow movement such as due to tow payout upon commanded movements of the fiber placement head. Gain scheduling based on spool radius is also provided. Additionally, a compliant roller is provided to reduce tension dips and spikes from disturbances on the tow, and an inner velocity loop is included with the closed tension loop to provide more effective control of tow tension. The servo control is reconfigurable into an open or pseudo-closed loop mode with a safety low power supply to slowly reel-up slack tow after tow threading, for example, and to otherwise maintain low tension on the tow to hold it in the machine while allowing servicing thereof.

  • Patent number: 5217562
Abstract: In the apparatus of this invention a plurality of cylindrical matrices 2 are used to form tubular sleeves of elastomeric material to be later cured and cut into short segments to be used as belts, usually toothed belts. A coiling station 8 places a reinforcing fiber helically around the entire length of the sleeve. The matrix having the coils is then turned to a vertical position by a transfer member 28 and transferred, by means of an adjacent rotating platform 6 to a winding station 9 for application of a sheet of elastomeric material over the thread. The matrix having the completed but uncured sleeve is then placed back on the rotating platform. The coiling station and the winding station each have a tilting member 34 or 43 with two pairs of arms 39 or 52 so that while a completed matrix is swung out of the working position, a fresh matrix is swung into position.
