  • Patent number: 4169007
Abstract: A dryer-cooling machine for combining a single face corrugated paper web whose flute peaks are wetted by lines of water-based adhesive with a liner web. The machine serves to cure the adhesive and thereby bond the webs together to form doubleface corrugated board. The singleface web and the liner web which overlies the flute peaks are transported by a conveyor belt through a heating zone and a cooling zone. In the heating zone, the belt carrying the webs passes through a funnel. Air is blown through the funnel to create in the converging region above the webs a static pressure which forces the liner into intimate contact with the flute peaks. Above this region are infrared heater elements. The wall of the funnel between the heater elements and the converging region is permeable to infrared rays whereby these rays penetrate the region and are absorbed by the liner to heat the wet adhesive, the resultant water vapors being carried away by the air flowing through the funnel.

  • Patent number: 4134781
Abstract: Effective control of warp in the manufacture of corrugated paperboard sheets on standard corrugator equipment is achieved by the on-line application of a regulated quantity of moisture to one or both sides of the completed corrugated paperboard web after it has been heat-bonded together, while it is still hot from the heat-bonding operation, and prior to its being cut into individual corrugated paperboard sheets. By proper selection of the quantity and placement of the moisture application treatment, it is possible to counterbalance the net effect of the warp-producing conditions developed within the bonded paperboard web prior to and during its bonding operation, so that the resulting paperboard sheets leaving the corrugator will be consistently substantially flat. The moisture application treatment is carried out with an adjustable moisture spray system designed to selectively apply to either or both sides of the bonded paperboard web a variable regulated quantity of moisture.

  • Patent number: 4056417
Abstract: An open-loop method and apparatus for controlling the heating of webs utilized in a corrugating machine for the production of double-face corrugated paperboard as a function of at least one production factor of the corrugator machine. A rotatably journaled heating roll receives a web in contact with a circumferential area of the roll and the circumferential area of contact between the web and the roll is varied by a control circuit. The control circuit varies the contact area by positioning a positionable means relative to the heating roll in response to at least one production factor of the corrugating machine. The control circuit senses the at least one production factor of the machine and generates a signal related to the sensed production factor. The generated production factor related signal is periodically sampled and is stored at a first time.

  • Patent number: 4038122
Abstract: Corrugated board is formed by heating the plastic coated bonding surface of a liner web to a plasticizing temperature against the Teflon coated surface of a rotating heating drum and, while plasticized, fused against the flute crests of a corrugated medium web. The fusion bonded joints are set in the nip of a chilled pressure roll for stripping of the board unit from the corrugating roll surface. Speed of the single-face unit is primarily controlled as a function of the magnitude of angular wrap of the liner web about the heating drum. Temperature of the bonding surface of the liner web is sensed upon removal from the heating drum for the purpose of speed trim adjustment.

  • Patent number: 3932248
Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed for making a laminated board of thermoplastic resin. The laminated board is formed of a pocketed core sheet having inverted and non-inverted pockets disposed between a pair of face sheets which are bonded to the extremities of the pockets.
