  • Patent number: 4891862
Abstract: A self-closing hinge comprises a pair of hinge leaves pivotally interconnected by an offset hinge pin. One leaf has a flanged head projecting substantially radially with respect to a sleeve of the other hinge leaf, within which the hinge pin is mounted. The external surface of the sleeve serves as a cam surface against which a follower element carried on the head of the other leaf is biased. The cam follower comprises a tubular spring-steel member oriented parallel to the hinge pin and generates a force through the head of the other leaf along an axis distally offset relative to the axis of the hinge pin. During closing of the hinge the follower is brought into registration with a pocket formed in the sleeve to effect a rocking movement of the follower about one edge of the pocket to generate a self-closing moment.

Abstract: A door hinge assembly which facilitates fitting and aligning of a door particularly in motor vehicles, including a first and a second hinge member each having, respectively, a first and a second eye with a hinge pin being engaged within the eyes of the hinge members to operatively mount the hinge members together. The hinge pin is mounted so as to be freely rotatable relative to the first eye, but secured against axial movement relative thereto. The hinge pin is shaped so that it will engage a part of the second eye so as to be nonrotatable relative thereto, with the portion of the hinge pin thus shaped having alignment faces which engage complementary faces on the second hinge eye which are directed diagonally relative to the hinge axis.

The hinge pin and the second eye are formed with axially extending splines engaged therebetween, the splines forming an addendum circle diameter. Axially adjacent the splines, the hinge pin is formed with a cylindrical section which engages within a complementary cylindrical recess in the second eye, the cylindrical section having a diameter which is slightly greater than the addendum circle diameter of the splines.

  • Patent number: 4503583
Abstract: Door mounting structure for pivotally mounting a door to a cabinet for selectively closing an access opening of the cabinet and permitting the door to be opened from either side, as desired. The door mounting structure includes locking structure for effectively positively retaining the opposite side of the door in latched association with the hinge structure of the cabinet when the door is opened from either side. Operating structure is provided for closing a latch member from an open position as an incident of closing movement of the door portion carrying the latch. The door mounting structure is mounted within the upper and lower portions of the door for selective latched association with hinge pins mounted to the top and bottom of the cabinet.

  • Patent number: 4503582
Abstract: Hinge structure for mounting a door to a cabinet for selective opening of the door from either side of the cabinet. The hinge structure includes a slide bar which is selectively positionable as a result of the opening of the door from either side of the cabinet to a thrown position. The structure includes locking elements for retaining the slide bar in the thrown position as long as the door remains pivoted open, thereby preventing the pivoting hinge structure from being removed from the cabinet. A second safety lock is provided for effectively positively preventing withdrawal of the pivoting hinge pin from the pivot slot while the door remains open from the opposite side of the cabinet. In one form, the structure for retaining the slide bar in the thrown position includes a pivotal member, and in another embodiment, the retaining structure is defined by a closely coiled spring.

  • Patent number: 4503755
Abstract: A louver system is described incorporating louvers having a rectangular outline and incorporating notches on each of the shorter sides of the louver. A one-piece molded hinge pin assembly is provided with a cylindrical extension to act as a hinge pin when the assembly is mounted on the louver. A pair of assemblies are secured to opposite sides of the louver by inserting the bodies of the assemblies into the notches provided therefor in the louver. Each assembly includes a slot into which the sheet metal, of which the louver is formed, is inserted while the cylindrical extension of each of the assemblies extends outwardly from the sides of the louver to provide a hinging axis upon which the louver may be supported and rotated. A detent or hole is provided adjacent each of the notches to accomodate a locking pin molded as part of the assemblies. When the assemblies are inserted into the notches, the locking pins engage the detent or hole to thus secure the hinge pin assembly to the louver.

A sheet metal sleeve 16 wraps loosely around pivot pin 15 and is secured to the ends 17 and 18 of strap 11 so that strap 11 can pivot on pin 15. A cover 20 is arranged over sleeve 16 and strap ends 17 and 18 and has end openings 21 through which pin 15 can pass. A pair of supports 25 and 26 with blind sockets 30 are pressed onto opposite ends 14 of pivot pin 15 and are made to overlap in a central region behind loop strap 11. Overlapping regions 31 and 32 of end supports 25 and 26 are secured to the vehicle so that strap 11 and cover 20 hang downward to conceal the securing mechanism.

Abstract: Structure for mounting a door to a cabinet for selective opening of the door from either side of an access opening provided in the cabinet. The door mounting structure includes hub portions which are removably associated with the hinge pins mounted on the cabinet. Positive locking structure is provided for positively maintaining the hub structures associated with the hinge pins about which the door is swung to prevent complete separation of the door from the cabinet. The positive locking structure includes a rigid element which is urged into interfering relationship with the hub structure associated with the cabinet hinge pin about which the door is being swung to prevent repositioning of that hub structure from a closed pin-engaging disposition to an open disposition wherein the pin is released. Overcenter detent structure is provided for maintaining the separable portions of the hub structure selectively in the opened and closed positions.

  • Patent number: 4490883
Abstract: First (12) and second (42,62) body portions are each attached to a structural member. The first body portion (12) includes trunnions (18) that are slidably received in corresponding channels in the second body portion (42,62). The second body portion (42,62) includes a base member (62) and a pivot member (42), which cooperate to form the channels. The pivot member (42) has an open position and a closed position. A spring (82) biases the pivot member (42) in its closed position. A lever (44) moves the pivot member (42) against the force of the spring (82) into its open position. When the pivot member (42) is in its closed position, it blocks portions of the channels, thereby locking the trunnions (18) into one of two lock positions in the channels. When the pivot member (42) is in its open position, the trunnions (18) may slide in the channels from one lock position to another or out of the channels to disengage the two body portions.
