  • Patent number: 7776179
Abstract: The present invention imparts fire-retardancy upon cellulosic products utilizing a cost-effective, non-toxic, and reliable process. Unlike previous methods which impart superficial fire-retardant coatings upon finished products, the present process treats the individual cellulosic particles (i.e. fibers, chips etc.) that make up cellulose-based particle products. Treating the individual particles provides fire-retardancy throughout the entire length and width of the product. This full-depth retardancy provides superior protection, especially in catastrophic fires where the surface coat of other products can be compromised.

  • Patent number: 5227024
Abstract: A process for reducing the density, increasing the bulk, the hand and the porosity of a sheet material containing fibers by use of a vegetable filler, wherein a pulverulant vegetable filler of density less than 500 kg/m.sup.3 is introduced into the fibrous mass during the manufacture of the material. At least 95% by weight of the particles of the vegetable filler are less than 150 micrometers in size and at least 80% by weight of the particles of vegetable filler are greater than 10 micrometers in size. The process is particularly useful for obtaining paper and cardboard of low density with improved hand (or bulk) and porosity. It is also attractive since it reduces the cost prices and enhances the thermal and acoustic insulation properties.

  • Patent number: 5203965
Abstract: A screening system incorporated into the system of sawdust collection for paper producing pulp. An upper and lower range of the sawdust particles is designated as between smaller, strength-inhibiting size particles and larger strength-enhancing size particles. A screen is provided to screen out the smaller size particles. The screen is made out of stainless steel to avoid rusting and corroding and also to more readily pass the moistened smaller size particles. The screen is sloped and agitated to induce shuffling of the sawdust mixture, the process of which results in a separation of about 50% of the particles as rejected smaller size particles and 50% as acceptable larger size particles desirable for paper producing pulp.

  • Patent number: 5137744
Abstract: A process for preparing a preferred vegetable fiber product is described. A particular process for reducing off-flavor and off-odor problems in materials such as sugarbeet fiber is specifically described. Also, a preferred system for conducting the process, and preferred products are disclosed. In general, the products result from preferred steps of heating, heat-treating, and washing the vegetable fiber material. Food products incorporating the preferred fiber material, and methods for incorporating the preferred fiber material into food products, are described.

  • Patent number: 5127995
Abstract: A family of novel and unique synthetic alkali metal alumino-silicates (SAMS) are produced by the hydrothermal reaction between kaolin and alkali metal silicates. The integrated composition of the SAMS products is a unique entity having an overall composition of ##STR1## where x is the number of moles of alkali metal oxide and is an integer from 0.01 to 2.0, M is the alkali metal, y is the number of moles of SiO.sub.2 in the unique SAMS compositions and is an integer greater than 2.0, and z is the number of moles of bound water and is an integer ranging from 1.0 to 5.0. The unique SAMS compositions are structured materials in which the structure can be controlled, and are therefore useful as functional fillers, as TiO.sub.2 extenders, as silica extenders or as reinforcing agents for paper, paint, rubber, plastics and specialty products.

  • Patent number: 5100511
Abstract: A method for the manufacture of products containing fibers of lignocellulosic material which involves the disintegration of a lignocellulosic material into fibers and forming and pressing of the fiber web into the product in question, which is preferably in the form of fiberboard (board products). The material that forms the fibers is impregnated with lignin in conjunction with water and at a pH which does not substantially exceed 12.5. When the lignin has been absorbed by the material it is fixed against leaching by water through the modification of said lignin into an essentially water-insoluble form.

  • Patent number: 5080754
Abstract: A method and article of manufacture thereof is provided for reducing brightness reversion in bleached lignin-containing pulps or newsprint by the treatment of the bleached lignin-containing pulp or newsprint with a compound which donates a hydrogen atom to a photo-excited group or free radical more easily than does the lignin contained in the treated pulp. The hydrogen donating compounds include compounds with certain formyl functionality, including formate salts such as sodium, magnesium and calcium formate, formamides, formic acid esters, and formylurea. In one embodiment, calcium carbonate is added to enhance the activity of the formyl compound. The further addition of a trace amount of superoxide anion quencher such as copper sulfate or ascorbic acid is also provided to still further enhance the activity of the formyl compound, especially formate salts.

  • Patent number: 5021122
Abstract: A shaped product comprising exploded bark. Preferably the shaped product comprises exploded softwood bark having at least 23% cellulose and at least 18% lignin and polyphenols content, based upon the dry weight basis of the bark. One of the methods to make the shaped product comprises exploding softwood bark to obtain exploded softwood bark having at least 23% cellulose and at least 18% lignin and polyphenols content, compressing that exploded bark into a shaped product, while removing in part water, and drying the shaped product to remove the remaining water.
