  • Patent number: 4285384
Abstract: An apparatus and method for removing tie bars from a die casting machine. The apparatus and method involves utilizing gearing attached to the tie bar nut whereby the nut is held captive, but is capable of being rotated by an auxiliary drive unit. Further, by utilizing the existing die casting machine functions, it is possible to remove the tie bar from the machine so that the die can be removed and a new die inserted into the die casting machine. By reversing the process the tie bar can now be reinserted into its operating position in the machine and the locking nut rotated to its proper position and locked up.

  • Patent number: 4271895
Abstract: An automatic part loading unit for loading various diameter and stack height sizes of rotor assemblies into the compensator sleeves of multiple cavity rotor dies for the subsequent casting of the conductor bars and end rings of squirrel cage electrical motor rotors. The loading unit comprises a magazine section having a plurality of inclined guide tracks on which the rotor preforms are stacked, and an escapement mechanism which permits one rotor preform at a time to roll from each of the guide tracks in the magazine section onto respective inclined guide tracks leading to the breech openings of the die cavities. The guide tracks are laterally adjustable so as to accommodate rotor preforms of various stack height. As the rotor preforms roll down the inclined guide track toward the die cavities, they are decelerated by means of pivotally mounted, counterweighted arms which are contacted by and then swung out of the way by the rotors.

  • Patent number: 4269259
Abstract: A pull-back ram cylinder apparatus in combination with a vertical mold clamping machine to be incorporated in a vertical molding or casting machine. The pull-back apparatus comprises a hydraulic cylinder for actuating a hollow ram. A ram extension consisting of the ram and a ram rod extending into the ram in a thread engagement is slidably fitted in the cylinder. The ram rod extends downwardly from the cylinder and is connected to a movable platen of the clamping machine carrying a movable mold. The cylinder has a lower throttle portion in which radial openings for discharging an operation oil are formed in an axially spaced arrangement. The inner diameter of the throttle portion is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the ram. The throttle portion having the axially spaced openings serves, in cooperation with the head end portion of the ram, as buffering means by which the movable mold is allowed to come into contact gently with a stationary mold.

  • Patent number: 4256166
Abstract: A system for individually adjusting tie bars of a die casting machine during operation includes a threaded sleeve securing one end of each of the threadless tie bars to a backing plate with an adjustment nut positioned between the backing plate and threaded sleeve for adjusting the machine lockup tension on the tie bar. The adjustment nut associated with each of the four tie bars has gear teeth and can be adjusted by means of disengagable idler gears commonly engaging a centrally located bull gear for selectively adjusting one or more of the tie bars. In one embodiment of the invention, strain gauges are placed on the threaded sleeves for detecting the lockup force applied to the tie bars through the sleeves and an electrical control circuit is employed for automatically controlling the tie bar adjustment mechanism to maintain tie bar tension within prescribed limits during production operation of the die casting machine.

  • Patent number: 4252177
Abstract: In cylindrical insert loading apparatus of the type wherein an insert transfer unit is reciprocated by a transfer device between stationary and movable metal molds of a die cast machine and an insert supply unit, the insert transfer unit comprises a movable frame and insert loading cylinders are mounted on the movable frame with their operating axes cross with each other. After the inserts have been supplied from an insert supply furnace to the operating ends of insert loading cylinders, the insert transfer unit is moved between the stationary and movable molds while maintaining horizontal attitude. The movable frame is moved in the axial direction of the die cast machine until the insert transfer unit collides against the movable metal mold to align the inserts with the insert receiving sections in the movable metal mold. Thereafter, insert loading cylinders are operated to load the inserts and the insert transfer unit is returned to the insert supply furnace.

  • Patent number: 4240498
Abstract: The specification discloses a die casting machine of the type adapted to form an article with an internal threaded portion. The threaded portion is formed by means of a threading device which is retractable. The threading device is rotatably and retractably operated by a pinion which in turn is rotated by a cog wheel. The die casting machine may contain a plurality of molding cavities, each being provided with the threading device. The cog wheels may be driven by a common rack which is hydraulically operated. Since the threading device of this invention is retractable, it is feasible to repeat a casting cycle without replacing the mold. Thus, it is much faster to fabricate such articles with the present machine than conventional die casting threading apparatus. Because no part is replaced or removed from the die casting machine in the present invention, it is possible to minimize possible dimensional variation among the articles fabricated.

  • Patent number: 4076070
Abstract: The invention relates to an automatic low-pressure diecasting machine, notably for mass-production equipments. The casting takes place through a heat-insulated distribution chamber thermally insulated from the lower portion of the mould structure and delivering the molten metal directly to the mould impression or impressions through a series of substantially vertical feed metal inlet passages formed through the mould bottom. The distribution chamber, of relatively simple design, extends substantially over the entire area of the lower mould impression which requires the presence of such feed metal inlet passages. This machine is intended more particularly for light-alloy castings.

  • Patent number: 4013116
Abstract: A die casting machine is described and includes a frame supporting two pairs of spaced, parallel cylinder assemblies with each pair of assemblies carrying a mold half and being opposed to the other pair of assemblies which carry the other mold half. Each cylinder assembly of each pair comprises a stationary piston secured to the frame; a piston shaft secured to and co-axial with the piston, the shaft extending across to a connection with an opposed piston of the other pair; and a cylinder is mounted on the piston and shaft for reciprocal movement thereon in response to fluid injected therein on either side of the piston.
