A housing is provided on the base plate for each opening, with each housing including one aperture for each feeder head with which the opening corresponding to the housing communicates. The use of this apparatus makes it possible to change one or more ingot molds while reducing the risk of explosion.

  • Patent number: 4942919
Abstract: An apparatus for the continuous casting of slabs has a mold and a slab support zone immediately following the mold. The mold is made up of four separate plates which are held together to define a mold cavity. A dividing wall can be removably mounted in the mold cavity in order to divide the same into a pair of parallel casting passages. Insertion of the dividing wall in the mold cavity makes it possible to simultaneously cast two relatively narrow slabs rather than a single wide slab. A partition designed to constitute an extension of the dividing wall is provided for the support zone and can be removably mounted in the same. Both the dividing wall and the partition are carried by a clamping mechanism which serves to clamp the dividing wall in the mold cavity.

Abstract: In the embodiments described in the specification, continuous casting of ingots is carried out by transferring molten metal from a hearth to a mold through one or more flow channels which provide flow paths having a shallow angle to the horizontal and which terminates adjacent to the surface of the molten metal in the mold so that the vertical velocity component of the stream of molten metal flowing into the mold is minimal and the horizontal velocity component is low. In one form, the hearth surrounds the mold, providing four shallow-angle flow channels uniformly spaced around the periphery of the mold to avoid unilateral introduction of the molten material into the mold.

Abstract: Melting furnace (1) for the production of strand-cast ingots (17, 18) in a protective gas atmosphere, has a charging apparatus (8) for feeding starting material (11) into a melting area (14). Within a melting chamber provided with a chamber floor (2d) and at least one energy source (4,5) there is situated a strand-casting mold (15) for the transformation of the melt to an ingot (17, 18) and underneath the strand-casting mold is disposed an offbearing apparatus (25) for offbearing the ingot, and an offbearing chamber enveloping the ingot and the offbearing apparatus. To solve the problem of operating such a melting furnace virtually continuously, the strand-casting mold (15) together with at least one additional strand-casting mold (16) is disposed in the chamber flow (2d) in such a manner that each of the strand-casting molds (15, 16) can be brought into the drop path of the melt by a preferably horizontal relative movement.
