Abstract: A refrigerant leak detection and mitigation system/method for use in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems that incorporates a refrigerant gas sensor (RGS), sensor signal conditioner (SSC), alarm status indicator (ASI), and digital control processor (DCP) is disclosed. The RGS detects ambient refrigerant gas (ARG) and indicates this as a refrigerant sensor voltage (RSV) to the SSC. The DCP and SSC form a closed control loop (CCL) in which the SSC electrical characteristics are adjusted by the DCP such that the RSV is continuously and dynamically recalibrated to account for background refrigerant gas levels, changes in ambient air conditions, RGS manufacturing tolerances, and other field-specific operational conditions that impact the RGS detection capabilities. The DCP is configured to log alarms to the ASI if a RGS refrigerant leak is detected and optionally shutdown one or more HVAC system components such as a specific air handler leaking refrigerant.

Between the pipes and the walls of the cooling channels, a cavity remains through which a cooling medium is circulated. A liquid heat exchange medium is circulated through the pipes. In order to vary the heat energy exchanged per time unit between the pipes and the machine casing, the kind of the medium circulating in the cavities is changed, or its composition is changed, or the flow velocity of the heat exchange medium is varied, or any desired combination of the above measures is realized. Thus, the heat flow, i.e. the exchange of heat energy per time unit, can easily be influenced by the provision of cavities between machine casing and heating or cooling medium by controlling its limiting heat exchange factors, i.e. thermal conductivity and heat transfer resistance.

  • Patent number: 5937942
Abstract: An electronic programmable thermostat having a program set made up of a plurality of program start times and program temperature values for a daily time period which can be automatically vacated upon initiation by the thermostat user. The user may initiate a temporary reset of the program time/temperature values whereby a microprocessor sets a new temperature value corresponding to a comfort temperature value obtained from one of the program temperature values. Preferably, the system automatically sets a temperature value equal to the highest temperature value of the program set temperatures, when in a heating mode, or the lowest temperature value when in a cooling mode. The system maintains such reset values until the beginning of one of the program start times depending upon when the reset feature was selected by the user.

  • Patent number: 5699857
Abstract: An automotive heater, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) control system reduces overall system cost and improves system reliability by reducing the number of wire interconnects between the climate control head and the multifunction body control module. Wire reduction from as many as seven to as few as one is possible with the inventive resistively multiplex system. The inventive system combines rear defrost, airconditioning on/off and a set of mode door drive motor select signals within a single climate control head. The inventive climate control head includes a series of resistors and switches that effectively allow a vehicle user to select the various modes of HVAG system operation. The climate control head effectively combines the various possible mode signals into one analog signal that varies according to the selected mode. The single analog signal is fed into a single analog-to-digital port in the multifunction control module.
