Publication number: 20030102115Abstract: A clamshell heat exchanger comprises upper and lower clamshell plates assembled together and sealed at the peripheral edges thereof, the assembled plates defining at least three internal passageways communicating in a serpentine configuration. The passageways include an inlet passageway having an inlet port for receipt therethrough of combustion gases, an intermediate passageway and an exhaust passageway having an exit port for the discharge of combustion gases, all such passageways lying generally parallel to each other. In one arrangement of the heat exchanger, the upper and lower clamshell plates define an air gap between the inlet passageway and the intermediate passageway, with the intermediate passageway and the exhaust passageway being joined by a secured flattened portion of the upper and lower clamshell plates. In another arrangement, instead of an air gap, the inlet passageway and the intermediate passageway are also joined by secured flattened portions of the upper and lower clamshell plates.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 19, 2002Publication date: June 5, 2003Applicant: Thomas & Betts International, Inc.Inventors: Philip E. Patent number: 6167946Abstract: A radiator includes a core portion, a header tank, a side plate attached to the core portion and a bracket through which the radiator is mounted to a vehicle. The bracket is separately formed from the header tank, and is connected to the side plate through a bolt. As a result, the radiator is readily mounted to a vehicle of a different model by only changing an attachment position of the bracket to the radiator, without modifying the header tank. Further, the bracket includes a coolant receiving portion disposed to face a drain outlet of the header tank with a predetermined gap therebetween. Therefore, coolant discharged from the header tank collides with the coolant receiving portion to reduce its dynamic pressure. As a result, coolant drained from the radiator is restricted from being scattered.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 2000Date of Patent: January 2, 2001Assignee: Denso CorporationInventors: Akira Uchikawa, Satomi Muto, Takaaki Sakane

Patent number: 4738306Abstract: An improved horizontal type radiator is disclosed in which the top wall of a header tank, into which a bank of radiator tubes are opened, is externally raised into an annular bulge formed to encircle an upper pipe hole bored in the wall through which a water filling pipe is inserted into the header tank forming an annular space about the inserted lower end of the pipe. Also, the bottom wall of the header tank is outwardly bulged into an annular bulge formed to encircle a lower pipe hole bored in the wall through which a water passage pipe is inserted into the header tank forming an annular space about the inserted end portion of the water passage pipe. With this arrangement, in operation when the water flows from the radiator tubes into the header tank, the water has limited chance of entraining air within the header tank, since the upper annular space in which air may possibly be entrained offers only a minimum contact surface of air with the water.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1987Date of Patent: April 19, 1988Assignee: Kawasaki Jukogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Shinichi Tamba, Hitomi Miyake

Patent number: 4734972Abstract: The tube plug removal machine removes any type of tube plug by drilling into a plug portion with a tap drill bit, engaging that plug portion with a threaded section of the tap drill bit after the drilled hole has been threaded by a tapping section thereof, and removing a portion of the tube holding the plug in the tube with a counterbore drill bit mounted concentrically about the tap drill bit. A trip pin and trip spline enable the tap drill bit to be automatically disengaged from the motor once the tap drill bit has been threaded into engagement with the plug. The conterbore drill bit is thereafter self-centered with respect to the tube and plug about the now stationary tap drill bit. After a portion of the plug has been removed by the counterbore drill bit, pulling on the tap drill bit will remove the remaining plug portion from the tube.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 1986Date of Patent: April 5, 1988Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Phillip J. Patent number: 4693300Abstract: A preferred embodiment of the invention comprises a sprinklerless snow control system for reducing the buildup of snow upon an exterior surface such as a roadway, parking lot, roof structure or the like including a water lift well extending beneath the surface of the earth and positioned adjacent to an exterior surface to be protected from the buildup of snow. A pump is positioned wiithin the water lift well to raise relatively warm subsurface water having a temperature greater than freezing from the earth and delivering the relatively warm water into a conduit heat exchange system positioned beneath an exterior surface to be protected from snow buildup. At least one recharging well is positioned adjacent to the exterior surface to be protected and receives water from the conduit system positioned beneath the surface to be protected for permitting the water to re-enter the ground to be recharged with solar and/or geothermal heat stored within the ground.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1986Date of Patent: September 15, 1987Assignee: Nippon Flute, Co.Inventor: Hideo Adachi

Patent number: 4653540Abstract: A heat exchanger tube plug, which is used to seal the ends of heat exchanger tubes and similar conduits, comprises a hollow housing member which has at one end a relatively large open bore surrounded by a thin wall, and a relatively smaller threaded bore which communicates with the larger bore. An insert member is provided which, in use, is threaded into the smaller bore thereby causing a tapered portion which is formed on the insert member to engage the open end of the large bore causing it to expand and bear against the wall of a heat exchanger tube into which the heat exchanger tube plug has been inserted.During use, the housing member is prevented from rotating relative to the heat exchanger tube by means of an eccentric assembly which is mounted on the end of the housing member.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 1985Date of Patent: March 31, 1987Inventor: Norman Epstein

Patent number: 4653577Abstract: A compact unitary heat exchanger and debubbler for a liquid includes an elongated heat exchange element having an inverted V-shape and a vertically-extending debubbling chamber located between the legs of the inverted V. The heat exchange element is made up of an inner tube surrounded by an outer tube, so that a heat exchange fluid such as water flowing within the inner tube exchanges heat with a treated liquid flowing within a space defined between the inner and outer tubes. After passing through the heat exchange element the treated liquid passes through the debubbling chamber and then through the device outlet. A bypass passageway in the vicinity of the treated liquid inlet to the device connects the debubbling chamber with the space between the inner and outer tubes of the heat exchange element. A valve movable into open and closed positions is provided in this bypass passageway.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 1986Date of Patent: March 31, 1987Assignee: Shiley, Inc.Inventor: Wayne A. Noda

Patent number: 4644908Abstract: A steam generator wrapper closure and a method of installing the same includes a plug member (108) which includes a large diameter portion (110) and a small diameter portion (112) with an annular shoulder portion (114) defined therebetween. A locking pawl (124) is rotatably mounted upon the plug (108) through means of its shaft (122). A pawl shaft extension rod (154) and a handle (150) are utilized to manipulate the pawl (124) and the plug (108) from a position external to the steam generator outer shell (16). The axis of the pawl shaft (122) is radially offset with repect to the axis of the plug (108), and the diametrical extent of the pawl (124) is less than that of the small diameter portion (112) of the plug (108).Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1984Date of Patent: February 24, 1987Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: John M.
