Patent number: 4281434Abstract: Apparatus for cleaning the surface of a rotating roller (1). First and second cleaning blades (8, 9) each have an edge extending axially across the surface of the roller and adjacent thereto, the edges being parallel and directed against the direction of rotation of the roller. The edge of the second blade (9) is disposed behind the edge of the first blade (8) relative to the direction of rotation. Means are provided for causing relative movement of the blades to reverse the disposition of the edges and cause the edge of the blade (9) to scrape that surface of the blade (8) which faces towards the roller. During such movement the blade (9) is moved so that its edge contacts the roller to keep a constant cleaning action. The edge of blade (8) scrapes the surface of blade (9) as the blades return to their original disposition.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 1980Date of Patent: August 4, 1981Assignee: Crosrol LimitedInventor: Lawrence G. Patent number: 4266598Abstract: Method and apparatus for storing of heat by use of the heat of fusion or crystallization of a liquid-solid storage medium. A conventional crystallization roller rotates with its circumference partially immersed in the melted storage medium. Heat receiving liquid circulated through the drum to a point of use receives heat from melted storage medium in contact with the drum, whereby such storage medium solidifies on the surface of the drum. The drum rotates the solidified storage medium past a fixed scraper which transfers the solid storage medium to a heat exchanger. Heat supplying liquid circulating through the heat exchanger imparts its heat to, and melts, the scraped-off storage medium which returns to the storage medium reservoir and brings with it the heat obtained from the heat supplying liquid.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 1979Date of Patent: May 12, 1981Inventor: Werner H. Patent number: 4196689Abstract: A Yankee clyinder whose internally heated shell consists of steel or cast iron and is provided with an external layer of pure or alloyed copper, molybdenum, tungsten or another metal whose thermal conductivity greatly exceeds (and preferably amounts to at least twice) the thermal conductivity of the material of the shell. The thickness of the layer is in the range of 0.4-2 millimeters, and the thermal expansion coefficient of its material is identical to or approximates that of the material of the shell. The layer can be applied to the periphery of the shell in molten state in the form of a finely atomized spray. The drying action of such cylinder upon a running paper web greatly exceeds the drying action of a cylinder whose shell consists exclusively of cast iron or steel.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1978Date of Patent: April 8, 1980Assignee: J. M. Voith GmbHInventors: Robert Wolf, Georg Zurn, Christian Schiel

Patent number: 4183149Abstract: A method and apparatus for drying a traveling fibrous web such as paper including a hollow cylindrical dryer drum with means for directing a flow of steam into the drum and for removing condensate from the inside of the drum and positioning an axially elongate bristle support with bristles projecting radially outwardly so that the support and bristles form a brush of substantial uniform axial density to generate a visual high level of turbulence in the condensate and decrease the rotational speed of the layer of rimming condensate formed on the inner surface of the drum shell.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1978Date of Patent: January 15, 1980Assignee: Beloit CorporationInventors: James L. Chance, Richard E. Hergert

Patent number: 4150717Abstract: Disclosed are checker tiles for regenerative heating stoves, each tile having the general shape of a parallelepiped, the preferred tile being square in plan, having apertures extending through the tiles and having complementary ribs and grooves extending on the ends of the tile between adjacent apertures to interlock the tiles with contiguous end-abutting tiles and prevent substantial lateral movement thereof when the tiles are arranged in stacked overlapping relation. Also disclosed is supporting means for checker tiles providing for low friction and preferential sliding of horizontal contacting surfaces to permit lateral relative movement between the lowermost course of tiles and supporting means that avoids damage to tiles on dimensional changes of the tiles or supporting means due to temperature changes in operation of the stove.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1977Date of Patent: April 24, 1979Assignee: Arthur G. McKee & CompanyInventors: George L. Balke, Edward F. Jablonski

Patent number: 4126177Abstract: A heat exchanger for rapidly heating or cooling materials such as fluids containing fragile, discrete particles of varying sizes without substantial damage to the particles. The exchanger has inner and outer heat transfer surfaces that define an elongated annulus. Located in the annulus is a pair of opposed, spiral, inner and outer ribs which do not span the annulus and which, upon rotation, move the material toward the exchanger inlet against the flow therefrom which overflows the ribs and moves from rib to rib and to the outlet. Scraper blades associated with the ribs, scrape the exchanger inner and outer surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1977Date of Patent: November 21, 1978Assignee: Chemetron CorporationInventors: Robert L. Smith, Carl C. Yann

Patent number: 4108733Abstract: A coke oven regenerator checker brick which incorporates, with the principle of maximization of heat transfer, the ability to minimize pressure differential within such a regenerator, while providing facility of inexpensive manufacturing techniques. A coke oven checker of standard overall dimension incorporates wave-like corrugations, for maximum surface area exposure, and sufficient web thickness to enable manufacture by the conventional re-press method which is the most economical commercially available method for manufacturing refractory coke oven checker brick.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 1977Date of Patent: August 22, 1978Assignee: Koppers Company, Inc.Inventor: Donald Joel Gerber

Patent number: 4091622Abstract: A solar heat wave energy system having a solar energy collector that collects energy from the sun to heat a boiler which in turn runs a steam turbine generator for generating electricity during the daytime. The system also has an assembly for generating electricity during the nighttime, which assembly includes a storage structure disposed between the solar collector and the boiler. This storage structure includes a plurality of separate storage stacks, each housed underground and including a plurality of heat conductive pipes interdigitally arranged with a plurality of plates constructed from twice-baked clay and arranged resting on a base formed from a similar clay as the plates. Solar energy is absorbed by the collector and transferred to the storage structure by means of suitable piping for storage in the twice-baked clay plates.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1976Date of Patent: May 30, 1978Inventor: Carlo M.
