  • Patent number: 11480017
Abstract: A releasable connector apparatus has a connector mandrel to be coupled to a conveyance and a housing to be coupled with a downhole tool. A socket is defined within the housing for receiving the mandrel. A latch arrangement operable within the socket has a latch member and is moveable relative to the housing between a connect position (in which the latch is locked relative to the mandrel to prevent removal of the mandrel from the socket), and a disconnect position (in which the latch is unlocked relative to the mandrel to permit removal of the mandrel from the socket). A cavity defined within the housing is sealingly isolated from the socket. An actuator mounted within the cavity is coupled to the latch arrangement to move relative to the housing between a first position (in which the arrangement is in its connect position), and a second position (in which the arrangement is in its disconnect position).

  • Patent number: 10047573
Abstract: An assembly for inclusion between a drill bit and a drill string, the assembly having an overrunning clutch mechanism that disengages the drill bit from the drill string during the “slip” portion of a stick-slip cycle to allow the drill bit to freely rotate faster than the drill string. The assembly further includes a rotational vibration dampener operatively connected between the overrunning clutch and the drill bit. The vibration dampener may include a fluid chamber with viscous fluid or restrictions to fluid flow to effect dampening. During normal operation, the one-way overrunning clutch remains engaged to transfer torque between the drill string and bit, while the torsional damper is in its maximum displaced position to transfer the load. During slip, the drill bit is disengaged until its speed is lower than the drill string speed. Torsional vibration dampener dampens sudden impulse force of the overrunning clutch re-engaging.

  • Patent number: 8490691
Abstract: A plug for sealing a conduit comprises a body having a first section and a second section, and at least one seal element for creating a seal between the plug and the conduit. The at least one seal element is adapted to be energized by movement in a setting direction of the first body section relative to the second body section. The plug further comprises seal locking means comprising a first portion and a second portion wherein as the at least one seal is energized, the seal locking means first portion is rotatable unidirectionally relative to the seal locking means second portion to take up the movement of the first body section relative to the second body section in the setting direction and prevent movement of the first body section relative to the second body section in a releasing direction, opposite the setting direction. In one embodiment the seal locking means first portion is a locking nut.

  • Patent number: 8474527
Abstract: A mechanism for adjusting the relative angular orientation of two coaxial components includes a mandrel having a cylindrical central section between upper and lower splined sections, a sleeve rotatably and slidably disposed around the mandrel's central section, and generally cylindrical upper and lower ratchet members positioned, respectively, about the mandrel's upper and lower splined sections. The ratchet members have internal grooves which receive the mandrel splines for torsional load transfer while permitting limited rotation relative to the mandrel, but their axial positions relative to the mandrel are fixed. The upper and lower ends of the sleeve have circumferentially-arrayed ratchet teeth engageable, respectively, with corresponding teeth on the upper and lower ratchet members. The central sleeve has torque-transferring external splines slidable within matching grooves on the inner surface of a cylindrical tool housing enclosing the mechanism.

Abstract: The downhole torque limiter and method eliminate damage to downhole components by eliminating excessive torque transmission. The device comprises a housing, compression assemblies, and anti-rotation plates. Inner and outer assemblies of the device are permitted to slip with respect to each other after reaching a settable torque limit which is preferably below the maximum capacity of other downhole components. The device may be positioned in drill strings that comprise a downhole motor and/or drill bit as well as drill strings that do not comprise a downhole motor and/or drill bit. In drill strings comprising a downhole motor and/or drill bit, the device may be positioned below the downhole motor and above the drill bit, adjacent to and above the downhole motor, or above the downhole motor such that at least one drill string joint is positioned between the device and the downhole motor.

  • Patent number: 8316954
Abstract: An apparatus for separating a downhole tubular string into two parts. The apparatus includes a receptacle operably associated with a first part of the downhole tubular string and a mandrel operably associated with a second part of the downhole tubular string. First and second sleeves each having a profile are slidably positioned between the receptacle and the mandrel and are operable to be securably coupled to the mandrel in first and second positions relative to the mandrel. First and second rings are respectively positioned between the profiles of the first and second sleeves and the profiled surface of the receptacle. The first and second rings are operable to initially limit longitudinal movement of the receptacle relative to the mandrel, to prevent tubular string recoil during operation and to allow longitudinal movement of the receptacle relative to the mandrel after operation.
