  • Patent number: 8403064
Abstract: A completion assembly of a top packer and zone isolation packers separated by screens has a disconnect in a selected zone to be fractured or gravel packed that is armed before such a procedure starts. Initially when the assembly of the outer completion and the inner string are properly located and all the screens valved off, all the packers are pressure set and the packer set release device associated with each packer is armed. Before starting a fracturing or gravel packing operation from a given zone isolation packer, a disconnect for that zone packer is armed so that if the inner string sticks in that packer, the inner string is sheared and removed and another trip is used to grab the top packer and pick up. Such picking up releases all the packers down to the one armed disconnect. The disconnect releases bringing up the remnant of the inner string stuck in the packer just above the actuated disconnect.

  • Patent number: 8393388
Abstract: A high expansion plug has multiple sealing elements and an extrusion barrier system that uses overlapping petals in a stack of rings. When setting the plug, the petals are elastically moved toward a surrounding tubular wall in an elastic deformation between a housing that surrounds the mandrel and a tapered ring on the mandrel. That sandwich controls the amount of deformation and allows a potential energy force to be stored in the petals that allows them to return toward their initial position when the set of the plug is released and the seals are allowed to relax and extend axially as they shrink radially. The plug can then be removed without milling. Expansions in the order of 25% of the initial seal dimension are contemplated.

Abstract: An isolation packer. The packer is both an inflation packer and swell-based. That is, an outer shell or bladder may be utilized in conjunction with internal swell material. In advance of inflation, a void or cavity may be disposed between the inner surface of the shell and an outer surface of the swell material. Thus, fluid inflation of this void may result in an inflation that becomes swell-material filled until the void is eliminated leaving behind a more unitary and swollen packer of enhanced reliability.

  • Publication number: 20130056228
Abstract: The seal has a base ring that expands with the underlying supporting tubular. Extending from the base ring is a pleated structure with segments folded over each other so that the run in shape is small and up against the supporting tubular for run in. The pleated segments can have internal stiffeners that also add a bias radially outwardly when the structure is freed to move in that direction. A retaining band keeps the assembly retracted until tubular expansion defeats the band to allow the unitary structure to move out radially to the wellbore or surrounding tubular. The pleated portion unfolds and spans outwardly from the base ring to retain pressure differential in one direction while allowing fluid flow in the opposite direction. The assembly can be attached to a swage device so that pressure from above into the set seal can drive one or more swage members to expand a tubular.

  • Patent number: 8336635
Abstract: A downhole apparatus and for use in a well bore and associated method are disclosed. The downhole apparatus includes a center mandrel. A slip means is disposed on the mandrel. The slip means can include teeth or the like for grippingly engaging the well bore when in a set position. A retractable packer cup is also disposed on the mandrel. The retractable packer cup is provided for sealing an annulus between the mandrel and the well bore. The retractable packer cup is slidable relative to the mandrel, and can be controlled to slide along the mandrel in order to move the slip to the set position. Also disclosed is a downhole assembly that includes a downhole tool and a setting apparatus. The setting apparatus can be used for lowering the downhole apparatus to a desired setting depth and then releasing the downhole apparatus.

Abstract: An elastomeric-based device configured for use in high temperature downhole environments exceeding about 400° F. The device includes a carbon nanotube mesh configured to dissipate heat relative elastomeric portions thereof so as to provide temperature resistance. Thus, a majority of modulus strength of the elastomeric portions may be maintained along with device functionality even upon exposure to such temperatures. Further, the mesh may also be configured to mimic the modulus character of elastomeric portions to allow a cohesive compliance to the device as a whole. Thus, isolation packers and other expansive downhole devices may particularly benefit from such combined material configurations as detailed herein.

Abstract: Expandable seals have one or more conforming ribs to facilitate creation of a seal to a sealing surface disposed in the well. The conforming ribs comprise a core of material either capped, partially covered by, or entirely covered by a ring. The ring can be formed of a metal that is softer than the metallic core material of each rib. Suitable metals forming the rings include copper formed by metal spun methods. Disposed adjacent to the rings are one or more sealing elements. By moving the rings into the sealing surface during expansion of the expandable seals, the rings close the extrusion gaps between the internal surface of the casing and the expanded tubular member ribs. The rings better conform to the sealing surface of the casing, thereby facilitating the creation of the seal between this sealing surface and each of the sealing elements.

  • Patent number: 8327929
Abstract: A support assembly for a deformable sealing element of a downhole tool such as a packer, bridge plug or straddle. The support assembly has first and second support devices at each end of the sealing element with each device having an elastically deformable support member adapted to be located between the respective end of the sealing element and an actuating member of the downhole tool. Additionally, a guide member with an inclined guide surface is provided such that the support member travels along the inclined surface when a force is exerted by the actuating member to expand the sealing element radially into abutment with a surface downhole. The support member moves radially outwards to support the respective end of the sealing element during deformation.

Abstract: Sealing devices for use in a wellbore to seal a leak path through an inner wall surface of the wellbore comprise a mandrel, an expandable element, and a shape deforming sealing element. Expansion or inflation of the expandable element moves the shape deforming sealing element from its run-in shape to its set shape. A stimulus, such as a change in temperature, acts upon the shape deforming sealing element facilitating the shape deforming sealing element changing shape. Removal of the stimulus causes the shape deforming sealing element to remain in the set shape. Thereafter, the mandrel and expandable element can be removed to leave only the shape deforming sealing element within the wellbore to seal the leak path.
