Patent number: 8881798Abstract: A subterranean tool that is self contained for actuation can be run into a desired location on an automatic set mode controlled by a timer. If a problem develops in getting the tool to the desired location in time a magnetic field created by permanent or electro-magnets can be brought to bear on the tool to stop the timer before the tool actuates. Once the tool is subsequently positioned at the desired location another magnetic field can be brought to bear near the tool to set it. Alternatively, the tool can be run to the desired location without activation with the timer and then the magnetic field can be brought to the tool to set it. The magnetic field can be lowered to the tool with wireline or can be dropped or pumped past the tool to actuate the tool. Optionally the field can be generated from within an object that ultimately lands on a seat to provide a backup way to set the tool using tubing pressure.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 2011Date of Patent: November 11, 2014Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Michael Ramon, Amy L. The actuation mechanism can selectively prevent a deployment of the supercapacitor device in the wellbore from causing a discharge of the energy from the supercapacitor.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 27, 2013Publication date: July 3, 2014Applicant: Halliburton Energy Services, Inc.Inventors: Christopher M. Publication number: 20140174733Abstract: A wireline configurable toolstring is conveyed within a wellbore extending into a subterranean formation via a tubular string to which the wireline configurable tool string is coupled in a manner permitting relative motion of the wireline configurable toolstring and the tubular string. The wireline configurable toolstring converts rotary motion imparted by rotation of the tubular string, or by fluid flow resulting from reciprocation of the tubular string, into electrical energy. The wireline configurable toolstring also comprises at least one wireline configurable instrument powered by the electrical energy.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 20, 2012Publication date: June 26, 2014Applicant: Schlumberger Technology CorporationInventors: Raphael Gadot, Jan Morley

Publication number: 20140174714Abstract: A completion system for use in a well includes a first completion section and a second section. The first completion section has a sand control assembly to prevent passage of particulates, a first inductive coupler portion, and a sensor positioned proximate to the sand control assembly that is electrically coupled to the first inductive coupler portion. The second section is deployable after installation of the first completion section. It includes a second inductive coupler portion to communicate with the first inductive coupler portion, to enable communication between the first completion section's sensor and another component coupled to the second section.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 27, 2014Publication date: June 26, 2014Applicant: SCHLUMBERGER TECHNOLOGY CORPORATIONInventors: Dinesh R. Publication number: 20140174757Abstract: Methods and apparatus are presented for removing a degradable barrier plug positioned in a downhole axial passageway. The degradable plug is initially isolated from fluid by at least one solid, non-degradable cover. A first electronic rupture disc assembly is actuated to open a passageway to the degradable plug. A second electronic rupture disc assembly is actuated to allow a fluid, such as water from a supply chamber, to flow into contact with the plug. The plug is substantially degraded, although the cover remains. A third electronic rupture disc assembly is actuated to bend and then cover the remaining solid cover, thereby opening the axial passageway and protecting later-introduced tools.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 31, 2012Publication date: June 26, 2014Applicant: HALLIBURTON ENERGY SERVICES, INC.Inventors: Michael Linley Fripp, Donald G. Publication number: 20140174716Abstract: A petroleum well intervention winch system includes a high pressure confining housing for a drum for a rope to a tool string. The pressure confining housing has a connector with an aperture for the rope to a top of a tool string gate chamber on vertical bore BOP valves on a wellhead on the petroleum well. The rope runs through the aperture via a capstan to the drum. The capstan is driven by a first motor through a first high pressure proof magnetic coupling across a wall of the housing. The drum is driven by a second motor through a second high pressure proof magnetic coupling across the wall of the housing. The capstan is subject to a load tension from the rope and is provided with a hold tension on the rope from the drum. The second motor exerts a constant hold tension on the rope via the drum.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 10, 2012Publication date: June 26, 2014Applicant: CAPWELL ASInventors: Morten Talgø, John Helvik

Patent number: 8757278Abstract: Sneak path elimination in diode multiplexed control of downhole well tools. A system for selectively actuating multiple well tools includes a control device for each tool, a well tool being operable by selecting a respective control device; conductors connected to the control devices, which are selectable by applying a predetermined voltage across a respective predetermined pair of the conductors; and at least one lockout device for each control device, the lockout devices preventing current from flowing through the respective control devices when voltage across the respective predetermined pair of the conductors is less than a predetermined minimum. A method includes selecting a well tools for actuation by applying a predetermined minimum voltage to a set of conductors; and preventing actuation of another well tool when the predetermined minimum voltage is not applied across another set of conductors, at least one conductor being common to the two sets of conductors.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 2010Date of Patent: June 24, 2014Assignee: Halliburton Energy Services, Inc.Inventor: Mitchell C.
