Patent number: 4548277Abstract: A spring reset mechanism for a ground engaging tool includes a four-bar linkage mounting for the tool. A fixed cam surface is mounted to one of the links and a roller cam carried by a guide link is spring-biased against the cam surface to urge the tool into its working position. As the tool nears the limit of its raised position, a recess in the cam surface receives the roller to reduce the rate of spring compression and enable the tool to clear an obstruction without substantially increasing the resistance force. Further, as the tool raises, the resistance moment arm decreases which further facilitates clearing a large obstruction. The reset force characteristics may be changed by simple and economical design changes.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 1983Date of Patent: October 22, 1985Assignee: DMI, Inc.Inventors: William J. Dietrich, Sr., Cary L. Sizelove

Patent number: 4532790Abstract: A ground working assembly has an inclined arm swingable up and down on a tool bar of an agricultural implement, the assembly being yieldably biased downwardly by a cushioning spring associated with a bracket which mounts the assembly on the tool bar. A tool-supporting shank depending from the arm at its lower, rear end is swingable rearwardly and upwardly relative to the arm, but held against tripping by linkage which is normally locked by the spring. During encounters by the ground-working tool with usual types of ground conditions tending to cause the tool to rise against the action of the spring, the assembly merely swings upwardly relative to the bracket. But tool damage is alleviated by unlocking of the linkage and tripping of the shank when more extreme conditions, such as large rocks, are encountered by the tool.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 1983Date of Patent: August 6, 1985Assignee: Morris Rod Weeder Co. Ltd.Inventor: Douglas C. Nicholls

Patent number: 4530406Abstract: A cultivating tool assembly for attachment to the tool bar of a cultivator frame utilizes an upright bracket for connection to the tool bar and an arm member pivotally connected to the mounting bracket and extending substantially horizontally therebehind. A coil spring biasing arrangement is also pivotally connected to the mounting bracket and extends in parallel relation to the arm member, connecting to a cradle forming a leverage arm extending upwardly from an outer end of the arm member. A tool shank having an elongate, generally horizontally extending upper end is affixed to the arm member and curves outwardly and downwardly in a semi-circular arrangement, culminating at a tool tip. The biasing arrangement is adjustable to vary the amount of force applied by the coil spring between the mounting bracket and cradle to control the running depth of the tool and to set the trip pressure.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 1983Date of Patent: July 23, 1985Assignee: Kent Manufacturing Co., Inc.Inventors: Kenneth A. Patent number: 4520878Abstract: A spring cushion assembly for a chisel plow shank is provided that eliminates the transmission of force from the shank and assembly spring to the tension rod of the assembly in directions transverse to the axis of the tension rod, thereby prolonging the life of the entire assembly. The spring cushion shank assembly includes a support frame pivotally supporting a shank, a spring interposed between a portion of the frame and the shank, and a tension rod received within the spring in non-contacting relationship. A seat supports the lower end of the spring and minimizes the tendency of the spring to buckle by coupling the spring to the shank about a pivot axis and by continuously aligning the longitudinal axis of the spring in intersecting relationship with the pivot axis as the spring is compressed.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1983Date of Patent: June 4, 1985Assignee: Hesston CorporationInventors: David R.
