  • Patent number: 7170017
Abstract: The invention relates to a coordinate detecting method for a touch panel. Firstly, a plurality of X-axis and Y-axis I/O ports are converted to a plurality of X-axis and Y-axis scanning wires respectively by orthogonal method. Polling signals are transmitted to X-axis I/O ports, and are transmitted to the X-axis scanning wires. According to the polling signals, a plurality of X-axis detection signals are stored. A largest X-axis detection signal and a second largest X-axis detection signal are determined by compared method so as to calculate a X coordinate position of the sensor pen touching the touch panel. The steps are repeated to calculate the Y coordinate position of the sensor pen touching on the touch panel. According to the coordinate detecting method of the invention, the number of the I/O ports can be reduced, and the resolution of the touch panel can be improved.

  • Patent number: 7110576
Abstract: A method and system for authenticating the sender of a mailpiece is described for identifying certain mailpieces as originating from known trusted senders. In one configuration, biometric information and/or biometric metadata is captured when a user writes on a mailpiece with a digital pen. That data is then compared to reference data in a database. Registrant data is then loaded into storage device on the mailpiece and may be digitally signed and/or encrypted by the trusted third party. In another configuration, a mailpiece includes the signature of a sender and the biometric data includes authentication data obtained from the signature that is compared to the biometric data related to the signature obtained during a sender registration process.

  • Patent number: 7084860
Abstract: A touch sensing apparatus for receiving input from one or more touch stimulating devices employs a direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) signaling arrangement to transmit signals from the touch stimulating devices for identification and location determination. Active devices are powered by an EM field and generate a touch stimulating signal that is spread spectrum encoded for identification, and signal pickups in a propagation layer receive the touch stimulation signals which are identified by the DSSS encoding and located using received signal strength (RSS) techniques. Semi-active devices are powered by an EM field and receive code instructions to generate specific spread spectrum signals and generate a touch-stimulating signal. Touch stimulating devices are either tethered or tether-free, and powered by batteries or EM fields.

  • Patent number: 6930672
Abstract: An input processing method and input control apparatus that enable switching between normal operation and hovering operation to be accomplished with a very simple operation in an information processing apparatus that uses a touch input device such as a tablet or the like as an input device. During a period that an improved hovering mode according to the present invention is set active, the time interval between a pen up motion and a subsequent pen down motion is detected. If the time interval is equal to or longer than a predetermined length of time, pen down information to be sent to the OS is set OFF, thereby effecting the hovering operation. On the other hand, if the time interval is shorter than the predetermined length of time, the pen down information to be sent to the OS is set ON, thereby effecting the normal operation. Thus, in the improved hovering mode, with an extra tap of a pen, the immediately following pen operation works as if it were performed in normal mode.

  • Patent number: 6703570
Abstract: A digital pen that has a writing tip includes an ultrasonic (US) transducer on a pen body that generates frames of US pulses toward a receiver base in response to an infrared (IR) synchronizing signal from the base. The first pulse of a frame is adjusted by a modulo of the US period &tgr; when the time of arrival (TOA) of the first pulse varies from an expected TOA by more than one-half &tgr;. The TOAs of successive ith pulses in the frame, which are one wavelength apart from each other, are adjusted forward in time by subtracting from each pulse TOA (i−1)&tgr;, and then several of the adjusted pulse TOAs in a single frame are averaged together to determine a frame TOA. The frame TOAs from plural receivers on the base are then triangulated to determine a pen position for that frame, with the pen positions being input to a handwriting recognition module.

  • Patent number: 6624835
Abstract: There is disclosed a system and method for noise reduction in touch screen systems. A touch screen system comprises an analog to digital converter capable of converting to digital signals analog signals from at least one analog resistive film in a touch screen. The analog signal is indicative of a location on the touch screen. The invention comprises an apparatus for reducing noise in a touch screen comprising a microcontroller coupled to said analog to digital converter. The microcontroller receives a synchronization trigger signal, and in response to receiving the synchronization trigger signal, waits to receive digital signals from the analog to digital converter until the expiration of a period of time in which noise associated with the synchronization trigger signal has occurred. A method for reducing common mode noise is disclosed that actively senses and removes the ground return offset from the analog signals of the touch screen.

  • Patent number: 6479768
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and a device for obtaining precision data acquisition via hand writing/drawing without requiring the use of a transducer pad, the screen of a monitor, or a scanner. As such, writing/drawing can be applied to almost all kinds of material surfaces, including books, fabrics, labels, etc., with or without showing an ink mark. Graphic and text images can all be effectively processed. Data acquisition function is accomplished by continuously monitoring the orientation of a magnet ball installed at the tip of a magnetomechanical ball-pen device whose outlook resembles a regular pen. When powered by a battery with self data-storage capability, the disclosed method and device allow for a new class of instrumentations that data acquisition function is carried out at the same time whenever hand writing/drawing is applied in the normal manner.

  • Patent number: 6278444
Abstract: A method and apparatus for making a five-wire touch-screen compatible with a four-wire interface is provided. A non-microprocessor-based converter is used that can be integrated directly into the touch-screen housing or the screen-to-interface ribbon cable. In one aspect of the converter, an analog logic and switching element routes the reference voltage from the four-wire controller to a current injection control device. The current injection control device applies a constant current to the outermost screen member of the touch-screen. When the outermost screen member and the innermost screen member of the touch screen come into contact, the current from the outermost member is injected into the resistive coating of the innermost member at the point of contact. The injected current is distributed to the four contact electrodes of the innermost member in direct proportion to the coordinates of the point of contact.
