Abstract: The present invention is a manually controlled and propelled wheeled vehicle whose wheels are locked or held in place via a braking mechanism. This invention includes a proximity sensing mechanism that determines when an operator is sufficiently in control of the wheeled vehicle. Upon an operator presence being determined, the proximity sensor calls for the release of the wheel locks and or braking mechanisms. Once the operator is no longer in the proper position, the wheel locks or brakes re-engage.

  • Patent number: 7395902
Abstract: A braking system designed to be an integral part of a shopping cart. The braking system consists of a hand-operated brake that is gravity actuated and normally engaged. The user disengages the braking system to move the shopping cart, preferably by pushing a primary handle of the cart. The braking system is also disengaged when the shopping cart is nested with other shopping carts to allow multiple carts to be moved without the brakes being engaged. The mechanical link from the handle to the brake is enclosed within the frame to reduce potential damage to the mechanism. The mechanical link consists of a hand-activated handle that is pushed down to disengage the brake, and when the handle is not depressed, the handle raises by gravity and applies the brake.

  • Patent number: 7316298
Abstract: This invention relates to gravity reactive braking systems. According to the invention there is provided a brake system to control speed in a forward direction for descending inclined surfaces and a brake system for controlling rollback when ascending an inclined surface. The speed pacer braking assembly includes a downhill activator for selectively engaging a disc brake system when a predetermined inclined is reach. The anti-rollback assembly comprises a pair of graded brake cam structures operatively disposed adjacent wheels wherein the natural pull of gravity and the configuration of the cams operate to allow passage of wheels in both directions when on flat surfaces and in only a single direction when on an incline. When on an incline, gravity operates to dispose cams relative to the wheels such that rotation of wheels in one direction is hindered by a thickening of cam body caused by rotation of cam about its axis.

Abstract: A locking device for a rear wheel of a golf cart includes a control member disposed close to the handle of the golf cart, and a locking member disposed close to the inner side of one of a pair of rear wheels. The rear wheel is free to move when a detaining element engages with a movable element for the same to be away from the opening of a housing, thus causing a retreat of an engaging rod to a receiving hole. The rear wheel is locked at an immobile position, when the detaining element disengages from the movable element so as to allow the engaging rod to stick out to engage radially arranged protrusions on the inner side of the rear wheel.

Abstract: An apparatus for the application of a braking force to a wheel of a wheelbarrow, hand cart or other type of a cargo portage device includes a twist grip mechanism with a latching type of a ratchet attached to the handlebar of the device. As the twist grip mechanism is rotated a progressive braking force is applied to the wheel by tightening a brake band that extends around a drum that is attached to the wheel. A cable is attached at one end to the twist grip mechanism and to the brake band at its remaining end. The ratchet maintains the braking force that is applied until a thumb release lever is depressed which disengages a ratchet dog from contact with any of a plurality of ratchet teeth.
