Abstract: A wheel for a baby walking cart has wheel parts fitted to two sides of a support member with an axle being passed through the central holes of the wheel parts and an elongated hole of the support member. The axle is also passed through a tubular slide member, which is movably received in the elongated hole, and biased towards a front end of the elongated hole by an elastic member. The wheel members have wavy slowing-down portions on inner circular surfaces. The elastic member acts against a force caused by the forward movement of the cart to push the wheel members towards the rear end of the elongated hole for keeping the wavy portions off slowing-down rods of the support member when the cart is moved along. When the cart is moved along too fast, the wheel members are forced to move towards the rear end of the elongated hole for the wavy portions to contact the slowing-down rods to slow down the cart.

  • Publication number: 20020005619
Abstract: A wheelbarrow braking system helps control speed of a wheelbarrow on a slope. A braking mechanism, such as a drum brake, a disc brake assembly or a caliper brake for the wheel, has a control cable and a twist-type control handle, which is installed in place of one of the regular handle grips. A simple twist of the handle operates the brake cable to activate the braking mechanism. A brake drum is mounted on one side of the single wheel by either bolting or welding the brake drum mounting plate to the rim of the wheel. For a two-wheeled wheelbarrow, a brake drum is mounted in the center of the axle upon which the two wheels are supported. Simply twisting the handle activates the braking system. This allows the operator to maintain contact with both handle bars during braking, facilitating greater control of the wheelbarrow. Caliper brakes may be used in the wheelbarrow braking system. A frame mounted caliper presses against a disc mounted on the wheel of the wheelbarrow to slow the wheelbarrow by friction.

  • Patent number: 6223864
Abstract: A shopping cart is generally a wire framed cage made of a specific gauge of metal that is mounted on four wheels. This invention deals with the use of a braking system to keep shopping carts from rolling away, for example: when a customer pushing their goods in a shopping cart stops on an incline to unload their goods into a vehicle the shopping cart must be held or propped against an object to restrict its movement or otherwise the cart will roll down the hill. This system will stop the shopping cart when the foot activated braking wedge is pressed into the wheel housing, by using the sole part of the shoe. The wheel will not move unless the braking wedge is released from its locking position by pulling upward on the braking wedge extension bar with the toe part of the shoe. This wedge is true to its shape and is applied to the wheel to stop the rotation of the wheel. The wedge takes up the space between the top of the wheel and the bottom of the housing, thus impeding the rotation of the wheel.

Abstract: An adjustable mobile base that accommodates machines of different effective footprints and allows them to be selectively moved from place-to-place or fixed at a given location. The mobile base assembly comprises a frame assembly comprised of corner members and side members. The side members are telescopically received within the corner members such that a width dimension and depth dimension of the base assembly can be changed to accommodate machines having different effective footprints. A lock system may be provided which employs one or more lock assemblies. Each lock assembly comprises a lock member that is slidably received within a lock housing and a drive member which is threadably received within the lock housing. Rotating the drive member in one direction elevates one or more wheels of the base assembly and thus frictionally engages the floor surface and prevents movement of the machine on the base assembly.

Abstract: A brake control device is mounted on a handle of a walking frame used by a lame or elderly person as an aid in walking. The device includes a seat fastened at one end thereof with the handle, and a control handlebar fastened at one end thereof with the seat. The seat is provided with a control arm and a stop member. The control arm is fastened with the control handlebar and is connected with one end of a brake cable. The control arm is actuated by the control handlebar to swivel so as to pull the brake cable to bring about the braking action which can be sustained without having to keep holding the control handlebar. The control handlebar is made stationary temporarily by a rolling rod which is forced into a retaining recess of the stop member for sustaining the braking action.

  • Patent number: 5730255
Abstract: The present invention relates to a wheeled carriage, particularly a walker, including a load-bearing frame having a plurality of wheels rotatably carried thereby for support and mobility thereof. The frame carries a hydraulic fluid reservoir, and a pair of pumps having inlet and outlet ports. The pumps draw fluid through their respective inlet ports from the reservoir and return fluid through their respective outlet ports to the reservoir. Conduit is also carried by the frame for fluid communication between the reservoir and the inlet and outlet ports of the pumps. The wheels are respectively connected to each of the pumps for operating the pumps in response to the rotation of the wheels. The frame further carries a valve in the conduit that is adapted to be opened or closed by the hand strength of the user. The closed position of the valve prevents movement of the hydraulic fluid from the outlet ports of the pumps to the reservoir whereby the connected wheels are prevented from rotating.

Abstract: A shopping cart has automatically applied brakes when the cart is at rest. The braking for the cart is by rotating the two casters to be non-parallel to each other so the cart will not roll. Any structure for rotating the casters may be used, but the preferred embodiment has an undulating upper bearing race so the weight of the cart urges the upper race down and causes the balls to seek high points on the upper race. The balls are caged, and the cage is fixed to the lower race, so the wheels of the casters are rotated when the balls enter the high areas. The upper bearing races are oriented to achieve the desired positioning of the caster wheels.
