Patent number: 5484042Abstract: The invention is drum brake assembly having a dual brake actuator. A piston-cylinder assembly forms the primary brake actuator, and a lever member, together with the piston-cylinder assembly, forms a composite structure which acts as a secondary brake actuator. The lever member pivots about an axis substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the drum, and the lever member is contained within the drum brake assembly. The piston-cylinder assembly is operable independent of the composite structure to actuate the brake.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1995Date of Patent: January 16, 1996Assignee: Brake And Clutch Industries Australia Pty, Ltd.Inventor: Nui Wang

Patent number: 4369863Abstract: An internal shoe-drum brake is disclosed in which a pair of arcuate shoes can be applied to a rotatable drum by an hydraulic actuation system for normal service braking when the brake acts as a brake of the "two-leading" shoe type and a mechanical actuation system for parking or emergency braking when the brake acts as a brake of the "duo-servo" type. The hydraulic system comprises two hydraulic pistons, each of which acts on the leading end of a respective shoe, and first and second abutments are provided against which the trailing ends of the shoes are adapted to rest. One abutment is fixed but the other abutment includes an auxiliary hydraulic piston which is adapted to be urged against a fixed stop by hydraulic pressure applied to the pistons. The reaction from the trailing end of a respective shoe tends to urge the piston away from the stop, but the area of the piston is sufficient to prevent this happening when the hydraulic pressure is acting on the piston.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 1980Date of Patent: January 25, 1983Assignee: Lucas Industries LimitedInventors: Glyn P. Patent number: 4345673Abstract: Backing plates are normally bolted to wheel gear housings and brake shoes are normally biased against such backing plates. Hydraulic or pneumatic lines normally proceed externally of the housing and over the backing plate to connect with a wheel cylinder which motivates the brake shoes. Such hydraulic lines can be easily damaged. A wheel brake arrangement (10) is disclosed which eliminates external hydraulic or pneumatic lines and eliminates such a backing plate. At least one conduit (33) is formed within a housing (12). The conduit (33) is connected directly to a wheel cylinder (28). The wheel cylinder (28) is mounted to one end (24) of the housing (12). A biasing structure (50) can serve for biasing a brake shoe (26) into contacting relation with one end (24) of the housing (12). A piloting arrangement (49) can serve for properly aligning the wheel cylinder (28) to motivate the brake shoe (26) and to receive pressurized fluid from the conduit (33).Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 1980Date of Patent: August 24, 1982Assignee: Towmotor CorporationInventors: William I. Patent number: 4266640Abstract: A wheel cylinder in a brake assembly includes a housing for movably carrying a pair of pistons. An intermediate wall of the housing separates the pair of pistons from each other and cooperates with each piston to substantially form a first chamber facing one of the pistons and a second chamber facing the other piston. An inlet communicates fluid pressure to the chambers via a first path and a second path within the housing. A pressure responsive member is disposed within one of the paths and is biased to a position opening communication through the one path. When the fluid pressure within one of the chambers reaches a predetermined value, the pressure responsive member is movable to restrict fluid communication to the one chamber while the fluid pressure within the other chamber is free to increase in value during actuation of the wheel cylinder.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 1979Date of Patent: May 12, 1981Assignee: The Bendix CorporationInventor: Ji Y. Patent number: 4180149Abstract: A drum brake is provided with a pair of brake shoes having axially inner and outer webs for supporting friction linings. A backing plate mounts the pair of brake shoes by providing radially outwardly extending lugs which are disposed between the inner and outer webs to prevent axial movement of the pair of brake shoes. Moreover, springs are disposed between respective lugs and portions extending between the webs to bias the portions into engagement with recesses on the backing plate. A double hydraulic actuator is positioned between the pair of braking shoes with one actuator cooperating with the inner webs and the other actuator cooperating with the outer webs during a braking application to urge the friction linings into engagement with a drum. The inner and outer webs also include slots substantially opposite the double hydraulic actuator for receiving plates which mount an adjustment mechanism between the pair of brake shoes.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1978Date of Patent: December 25, 1979Assignee: The Bendix CorporationInventors: Donald D.
