  • Patent number: 4446785
Abstract: A clutch and brake system for starting and stopping a power press uses hydraulically actuated brake and clutch mechanisms. To start the press, the brake is hydraulically released while the clutch is hydraulically engaged at a predetermined intermediate torque level which is less than the full clutch torque level. The clutch is maintained at that intermediate torque level until the present drive shaft has attained its substantially full speed, and is then increased to the full clutch torque level. To stop the press, the clutch is hydraulically disengaged while the brake is hydraulically engaged at a predetermined intermediate torque level which is less than the full brake torque level. The brake is maintained at this intermediate torque level until the press drive shaft has substantially stopped, at which time the brake torque is increased to the full brake torque level.

Abstract: A clutch drum for an automatic transmission features a large diameter portion in which a plurality of first slots define castle-like projections about one end thereon and a second set of slots which originate in the projections near the tops thereof and which extend to and terminate in an essentially frusto-conical portion which interconnects the large diameter portion and a small diameter portion containing a piston therein. The first slots serve to mount clutch discs within the drum while the second slots mount discs about the drum. The relatively wide castle-like projections allow the production of the drum from relatively light gauge sheet metal, which has adequate structural rigidity and a reduced maximum diameter.

  • Patent number: 4399715
Abstract: In a power take-off a spring engages a hydraulically actuated clutch-activating pressure plate to force the same into a neutral position. In one embodiment of the invention a hydraulically operated spring-loaded piston for arresting the rotational motion of an output shaft engages the pressure plate upon shifting thereof into its neutral position and consequent uncoupling of the output shaft from an input or drive shaft. • Patent number: 4341282
Abstract: An over-the-road type vehicle for transport and powering of a seismic hydraulic vibrator which is adapted to operate in either one of two modes of operation. A first mode is the conventional mode wherein the vehicle is operated over large distances at varying road speeds, obtained by use of multiple gear ratios, and varying engine speeds. The second mode of operation is in a single value of road speed, with engine under control of a governor, to operate at constant high speed, and the movement of the vehicle is by successive short traverses at constant speed. In this second mode of operation the single engine alternately powers the hydraulic vibrator, and with the engine still at high speed, then moves the vehicle to a new vibration point a short distance away. A high energy efficiency is provided by the use of a mechanical, rather than hydraulic drive system, and a high time efficiency is provided by a novel style of clutch that can start the vehicle from rest with the engine at maximum speed.

Abstract: The drum of a winch suitable for cranes is driven by gearing compactly arranged within the drum, leaving room also for a free fall dog clutch when desired. The gearing is of the compound planetary type which can provide very high ratios with low friction. The low friction yields greater efficiency, and permits retaining the gearing in operation idly during free fall, ready for fail-safe braking using it. A separate brake is provided for stopping free fall, when free fall is provided. The winch motor is preferably of the two unit type, with valving for two speeds. Operation of either manual valve (normal operation or free fall) from its neutral position neutralizes the other. Numerous automatic valves are included in a valving block, providing simplicity of piping.

  • Patent number: 4176738
Abstract: A piston stroke adjusting arrangement disc-type friction clutches or brakes used most advantageously in forging machines and presses where rapid engagement and disengagement of clutches and brakes is essential. The arrangement includes a housing and a cylinder flange, fast with each other, the cylinder receiving the piston reciprocating therein. Axial displacement of the piston is limited by a washer arrangement in a groove made in the housing and having radially running recesses of different depths. The flange of the cylinder carries an abutment engageable in one of the radial recesses of the washer. The disclosed construction simplifies the structure of the arrangement, as a whole, and provides for both rapid and reliable adjustment of the piston stroke value.

  • Patent number: 4129204
Abstract: A steering clutch and brake power drive assembly wherein a clutch pack and a brake pack formed of a plurality of facially engageable plates are respectively retained between a retaining plate and a housing portion of the assembly by a plurality of bolts which, in the assembled arrangement, provide a preselected stress in biasing springs acting on the clutch plates and brake plates, respectively. A novel arrangement of bolts is provided wherein different size bolts are utilized for facilitating the assembly and disassembly. A small number of the bolts is made to be sufficiently large so that the assembly may be maintained by a single one thereof notwithstanding a high biasing force generated by the spring in the assembled arrangement. An improved lubrication oil transfer structure is further provided to the plate stack from a pressurized oil supply defined by a lubricating oil cavity adjacent the plate stack.

Abstract: An auxiliary drive is provided for a drive mechanism for a conveyor, the mechanism including a brake and clutch arrangement designed to facilitate the starting and stopping of the conveyor. The auxiliary drive is conveniently mounted on the mechanism and has a drive motor driving a gear through an intermediate pinion, a gear wheel fixed to the driven stage of the mechanism. The intermediate pinion is movable to engage both the gear wheel and gear to transmit drive from the motor to the driven stage but is actuable to discontinue such drive. The auxiliary drive is intended to provide a means whereby the driven stage may be run at a speed lower than its normal operating speed, a particular application being to conveyors of the scraper chain type which at times require tensioning or detensioning of the chain for maintenance purposes, but at speeds lower than can be achieved using the main drive motor.

Abstract: High and low speed clutch assemblies are spaced apart along a rotatable shaft. Each of the clutch assemblies includes a plurality of annular friction plates which may be engaged by movement of annular pistons. A brake assembly is mounted between the clutch assemblies and includes friction surfaces carried about the rotatable shaft and annular brake plates mounted on opposite sides of the friction surfaces. A stationary housing is mounted about the brake assembly. Adjacent ones of the pistons and the brake plates are interconnected, such that the friction surfaces of the brake assembly are disengaged when either of the clutch assemblies are engaged by application of fluid pressure. The pistons and brake plates are spring-loaded such that when both of the clutch assemblies are disengaged, the brake plates move to engage the friction surfaces with the stationary housing to brake the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4076219
Abstract: A winch drum carrying a cable is supported by drive mechanism which includes a normally disengaged drive input clutch that is engageable in response to pressurized fluid to reel in cable. A normally engaged disconnect clutch disengages in response to fluid pressure to free the drum for rotation independently of the drive mechanism. A normally engaged brake immobilizes the drive mechanism except when released by fluid pressure. A control valve provides for directing pressurized fluid to appropriate ones or combinations of the clutches and brake as necessary to establish any of four operational conditions including Reel-In, Brake-On, Brake-Off and Disconnect modes of operation. A check valve between the flow lines that connect the control valve to the input clutch and to the brake assures that there is no momentary overlapping of engagements of both the input clutch and the brake when the Reel-In mode of operation is initiated or terminated.
