Abstract: A positive drive is disclosed of the type including an input (11,13,21) and a pair of outputs (27,29) in which torque is transmitted from the input to the outputs by means of a pair of drive coupled members (23 and 25) and clutch assemblies (35 and 37). In order to frictionally dampen any undesirable oscillations to the input relative to the outputs, each of the clutch assemblies includes inactive clutch discs (61 and 63). It is one important feature of the invention to increase the net clearance, i.e., the amount of rotational movement of the input relative to the outputs over which frictional dampening occurs. If additional biasing preload is required for the inactive discs only, a separate biasing spring (71,73) may be added for each of the clutch assemblies.

  • Patent number: 4317343
Abstract: A drive arrangement is disclosed for producing oscillation of a washing machine agitator and rotation of the basket for the spin cycle. The arrangement consists of a DC motor having an oscillating mode and a unidirectional rotation mode, the motor driving a mechanically shifted transmission, including a planetary gear set driving the washing machine agitator during the oscillation mode of the motor. A gear case is clutched to the washing machine basket during the spin cycle to produce direct drive of the basket during unidirectional rotation of the motor. The transmission shifter arrangement is operated by an incremental rotation of the drive motor which causes a cam follower-shifter member to be axially displaced from a neutral position to produce either a spin or agitate drive condition of the transmission.

  • Patent number: 4307870
Abstract: The drum of a hoisting apparatus is axially shifted to frictionally engage a driving plate. The drum is shifted by rotating an adjacent, first disc about the drum axis relative to a coaxial stationary disc. Each of the discs has three holes of a particular configuration to define three cooperative pairs of holes. Each cooperative pair of holes receives a dowel of predetermined length so that rotation of the first disc causes the dowel to react against the discs and shift the first disc and drum away from the stationary disc and into frictional driving engagement with the driving plate.

  • Patent number: 4307795
Abstract: Shift mechanism for a transmission is provided for engaging and disengaging a gear therein. The mechanism is particularly designed to disengage the gear when the transmission is under a heavy load. The mechanism includes a clutch dog or collar on a shaft, with the collar having at least one lug or tooth which is engagable with and disengagable from a lug or tooth on a gear rotatably carried on the shaft. The clutch collar has a peripheral flange with a cam configuration on the side toward the gear. A shifter fork has a projection or cam follower with a cam surface facing the cam surface of the flange. To disengage the clutch collar from the gear, the cam follower of the shifter fork is engaged with the cam surface of the clutch collar and forces it away from the gear to a disengaged position, even when the transmission is under a heavy load.

  • Patent number: 4291556
Abstract: A transmission shift mechanism for use in a vertical axis automatic washing machine having reversible rotary drive means has a drive gear on which is mounted an eccentric for translating rotary motion into oscillatory motion in a plane perpendicular to the washing machine axis. The oscillatory motion is transmitted to the agitator shaft of a washing machine by a rack and pinion. The pinion is rotatably mounted on the agitator shaft and has teeth on a lower surface thereof which engage teeth on an upper surface of a sleeve co-rotatable with the agitator shaft to form a jaw clutch for driving the agitator shaft from the rack and pinion. A shifter fork also connected to the eccentric operates cams to raise the pinion out of engagement with the sleeve to disengage the jaw clutch when the eccentric is rotating in a first direction, and returns the clutch teeth to engagement when the eccentric rotates in an opposite direction.

Abstract: A limited slip differential includes a mechanism for producing a varied bias ratio as a result of changes in side gear torque. An annular drive flange is biased toward frictional locking means within the differential case to provide biasing as required. The flange contains a first cam surface mateable with a second cam surface disposed on the back face of one of the side gears. Either the first or second cam includes a variable pressure angle, whereby a varied biasing force is developed on the drive flange as the side gear moves relative to the flange via changes in side gear toque.

  • Patent number: 4287973
Abstract: A friction clutch including interleaved compressible friction plates or overlapping conical rings and selectively operable structure effecting engagement thereof. One aspect of the invention relates to the structure for utilizing torque generated between the parts to be clutched for providing the compression force to be applied to the plates or the cone rings. Roller and ramp structure is provided between driving and driven parts responding to torque initially applied to the driving member for generating an axial force which is then applied to the clutch pack compressing structure. The roller has an elongated structure which will permit it to first roll about an axis perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the friction clutch and subsequently slide along its axial length. This structure will prevent or at least considerably reduce the power surges following a complete clutching operation.

  • Patent number: 4287972
Abstract: A locking gear in the form of an annular, slotted cam member causes a driving member to move into locking engagement with a member to be driven automatically in response to the application of torque or positive rotation to the driving member. The driving member can be disengaged only by removing torque from the driving member and reversing the direction of rotation of the driven member without relying upon spring force for disengagement. Accordingly, the driving member is not only forcefully cammed into engagement with the member to be driven but is mechanically and positively cammed into disengagement at the will and under the full control of the operator. Thus in four-wheel drive vehicles, the wheels or members to be driven are selectively engaged by a drive gear which is slidably advanced through interengagement of cam followers on the drive gear with camming surfaces on the locking gear.

Abstract: Torque is transmitted from the input member of a clutch to a primary shoe when the primary shoe is pressed into frictional engagement with the input member by compression springs. • Patent number: 4238014
Abstract: An automatic locking gear has been devised in which rapid, positive axial location and driving engagement is established between concentric driving and driven members through the agency of a clutch type actuator mechanism which is responsive to rotation of the driving member to be forced into intermeshing engagement with a complementary receiving member on the driven member. The actuator mechanism is characterized by including a spring-loaded compressible bearing arrangement which normally urges the actuator mechanism into a locked stationary position but will permit retraction of the actuator mechanism away from the locked position whenever torque is applied to the actuator mechanism so that the mechanism is free to travel or rotate with the actuator-receiving mechanism when the driving and driven members are interconnected; and when torque is no longer applied to the actuator mechanism it is free to return gradually into its normal locked position without the application of external forces or control.
