  • Patent number: 4779715
Abstract: A lane divider for automatically dividing a single row of objects into a plurality of rows is shown in its preferred form as including a diverting conveyor having an outfeed end movable between a plurality of lane positions. The diverting conveyor includes belts located on the faces of first and second elongated pivot bars to form an object passage channel. The elongated pivot bars are pivotally mounted in a parallelogram arrangement about fixed axes adjacent the infeed end and about axes adjacent the outfeed end which are reciproated. Opposite point deflection between the belts is minimized by changing the relative length of the drive chain between the drive shafts of the belts in response to the pivoting of the elongated pivot bars by pivotally interrelating the elongated pivot bars to a plate pivotally mounting idler sprockets on opposite sides of one of the drive shafts.

  • Patent number: 4753429
Abstract: A collating station is disclosed for a machine intended to insert first and second documents into an envelope. Prior to the insertion operation, the first and second documents are advanced serially in a common plane. At a predetermined location, each first document is intercepted and lifted above the common plane and moved to a holding platform spaced above the common plane. The holding platform has a transverse terminal edge downstream from where the first document comes to rest. Thereupon, the first document resting on the holding platform and a following second document which continues to advance along the common plane as the first document travels toward the holding platform are advanced together in a parallel spaced relationship, toward a downstream station. As the documents are advanced, the first document drops off the terminal edge of the holding platform and onto the second document thereby completing the collating operation.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to a machine and method of applying cigarette tax stamps to cigarette packages in cartons. The machine includes an input platform or table that receives cartons from an infeed conveyor, and three incoming cartons are fed to three parallel channels. In each of the channels, the flaps of a carton are opened and folded upwardly and outwardly, thereby exposing the ends of the packages. Tax stamps are applied to the ends of the packages, glue is then applied to the outturned flaps, and the flaps are folded in again and resealed. The three channels are spaced laterally apart of the direction of movement of the cartons as they move through the channels. The cartons are pushed onto the input platform with their long dimension extending parallel to the channels. The carton movement is stopped by an end stop that is located to position the first, third and fifth cartons generally in line with the input ends of the three channels.

Abstract: A divider switch for a roller conveyor selectively switches or displaces the lateral position of objects being conveyed to either separate or merge the objects. The switching apparatus is interposed in a live conveyor system. The divider switch includes a framework of longitudinal and transverse members; a plurality of transverse rollers at either end of the switch; a set of angularly movable rollers centrally located in the switch, the angularly movable rollers being of shorter length than the transverse rollers and switchable between at least two angular positions which define opposite acute angles relative to the transverse rollers; and two additional sets of rollers disposed on opposite sides of the angularly movable rollers, the additional sets of rollers being fixedly mounted to define opposite acute angles relative to the transverse rollers.

  • Patent number: 4215964
Abstract: A three-bale load is accumulated on the trailer as bales issue from the rear of the baler, whereupon the accumulated bales may be dumped all at the same location or singly as may be desired. Successive bales issuing from the baler arrive at a central platform from which they are alternately distributed to laterally disposed side platforms in an automated procedure. Once a side platform receives its bale, lockout mechanism prevents the transfer device from presenting the side platform with another bale until such time as the previous bale has been dumped. Once a bale has been dumped from a platform, the transfer device is automatically actuated, if indeed the next bale is ready to be transferred, for loading of the next bale onto the awaiting side platform.

  • Patent number: 4081078
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a carton sorting device which comprises a main conveyor and at least one subsidiary conveyor angled away from the main conveyor at a branching unit. The main conveyor is adapted to apply a lateral force to articles having a lateral dimension below a preselected value so as to urge such articles onto the subsidiary conveyor. Articles having a lateral dimension greater than said preselected value are not affected. In this way, a mixture of the small and large articles are divided into two streams, the main conveyor carrying a stream of larger articles and the subsidiary conveyor only a stream of smaller articles. The invention also makes provision for sorting streams of articles having differences in their longitudinal dimension.

  • Patent number: 4039072
Abstract: A system for conveying molded bricks known as briquettes from a press to a bed plate wherein the briquettes are each conveyed by a plurality of spaced parallel belts to above a conveyor which carries the bed plates under the briquettes supported by the conveyor belts. An inclined substantially coplanar conveyance track which includes elongated rollers has its after portion periodically raised whereby the rollers located in the after portion penetrate upwardly between the belts carrying the briquettes thus lifting the briquettes from the belt. A removal mechanism pushes the briquettes down the rollers of the conveyance track onto a removal plate which pivots with the conveyance track and extends therefrom at a slight incline, the briquettes being received by the main conveyor carrying the bed plates whereby the briquettes are pushed over the conveyance track and onto the bed plate.

Abstract: Packages are moved from an input conveyor in an input section onto moving rollers in a row-forming section. As the packages move forward on the rollers, a distributing device moves laterally with respect to the motion of the packages on the rollers so as to selectively position the packages in rows. Turning means are placed in the path of the packages as they advance on the rollers to rotate the packages with respect to one another. The rows collect on the rollers and are then moved to a stacking section where they are palletized. Transversely extending bars are provided to control the movement of the rows through the row forming section and the stacking section.

  • Patent number: 4016788
Abstract: A conveyor handling system, includes three paths along which articles travel, and a diverter located in an intermediate portion of the paths and operative to effect transfer between the paths. Sensors located upstream and downstream of the diverter monitor the rate at which the articles arrive at and leave the diverter. A comparator is responsive to the downstream sensor to cause the diverter to direct the articles between the paths in such a sense as to maintain the rates of flow of articles along the three paths downstream of the diverter substantially equal. A control unit responds to the upstream sensor to determine whether there is sufficient space for each article to be transferred transversely of the direction of motion to an adjacent path without reducing a predetermined minimum spacing requirement for the articles in each path. If there is insufficient space to effect a transfer, the control unit acts to inhibit the diverter from performing such a transfer.
