Patent number: 5045155Abstract: The disclosed invention is an apparatus and process for the distillation of liquids. The apparatus is comprised of a plurality of vertically stacked parallel disks which are rotated in a horizontal plane. The liquid to be distilled is introduced into the center of the disk stack and migrates by centrifugal force as a thin film across the top surface of each disk. During migration, the more volatile portion evaporates from the top surface and condenses on the bottom surface of a top, neighboring disk. The apparatus is multiple-effect in that the heat evolved from condensation is transferred through the thin, heat-conducting disks to provide the heat necessary for vaporization.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 1989Date of Patent: September 3, 1991Inventor: Arnold Ramsland

Patent number: 4938868Abstract: The vacuum column system distills liquid under partial vacuum conditions. The system rigorously splashes and boils liquid in a boiler chamber so as to form vapor and a rising mist from the splashing liquid. The vapor and mist rise in a circularly converging path through a mist collector. The heavier mist strikes the surfaces of the mist collector and deposits on those surfaces, thereby separating itself from the vapor. The vapor is then drawn to a condensor chamber where droplets of treated liquid are sprayed through it and fall into a shallow pool of treated liquid. The droplets seed condensation of the vapor directly onto the droplets. Also, the droplets assist in encapsulating bubbles of vapor in the pool as the droplets fall into the pool. The bubbles are then entrained with other treated liquid of the pool as the treated liquid is drawn from the pool down an entrainment conduit.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 1988Date of Patent: July 3, 1990Inventor: Thomas R. Patent number: 4696718Abstract: A highly efficient water purification device includes a degasification apparatus, a distillation apparatus and an ion removal device to purify contaminated water. When a partial vacuum is applied to the degasification apparatus, dissolved gases leave the water, and a heat exchange process occurs which heats the gases and cools the degassed water. A gas exhaust channel transfers the warmed gases to a heating coil in the distillation apparatus to preheat water for evaporation therein while the cooled, degassed water is transferred to a condenser to condense vapor and steam. The degasification apparatus may include one or more towers in which a vacuum is formed by first filling the towers with water, sealing the tower top, and then draining water from the tower bottom; this vacuum may be applied to the distillation apparatus and a reservoir by transferring the vacuum from the towers through a depressurization conduit to thereby achieve boiling in the distillation apparatus at reduced temperatures.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 1986Date of Patent: September 29, 1987Inventor: Henry C.
