  • Patent number: 4021905
Abstract: A method of prolonging the life of a carbon anode ring furnace is disclosed wherein portions of the confronting refractory brick flue walls of the furnace which have partly collapsed can be readily straightened. The refractory bricks of the collapsed portion of a flue wall are urged back into the plane of the wall by interposing a hydraulic jack between the closely spaced flue walls and actuating the jack to apply opposing forces to the wall. The jack is positioned and actuated in a number of locations corresponding to a predetermined circular pattern about a deformation zone to successively reduce the deviation of the bricks of the deformation zone. A tie brick is thereafter inserted between the walls to maintain them in their normal spaced relation.

  • Patent number: 3997407
Abstract: A method and apparatus for disposal of rubber wastes is provided wherein rubber wastes such as scrap tires are dry-distilled in a vertical dry distillation retort of an internal heating type having a rotary discharge chute with a water seal, valuable substances contained in the rubber wastes, such as carbon black and oil, are effectively recovered and dry-distilled gas is used as a heat source for the dry distillation of the rubber wastes.

  • Patent number: 3993546
Abstract: A shaft furnace for the thermolytic distillation of solid hydrocarbon fuel comprises a vertically disposed cylindrical casing whose upper part accommodates at least two vertical gratings which divide the casing into a heat carrying distributing chamber, a semi-coking chamber and a vapor-gas mixture chamber with a gasification chamber located underneath the three above-mentioned chambers. The lowermost edge of at least one of the gratings is provided with opposing cutouts such that the middle section of the edge is substantially lower than the sides of the edge adjoining the casing. In this manner, the solid fuel is more evenly distributed in the gasification chamber and a more uniform distillation of the fuel is achieved.

  • Patent number: 3957590
Abstract: In a coking oven, in which gas is withdrawn from a chamber through a conduit, a draft control is interposed in this conduit to regulate the pressure therein. The draft control comprises a first and a second throttle flap which are mounted in the conduit and which together cover part of the interior cross-section thereof, the remainder of the cross-section being blocked by a fixedly mounted element, and arrangements being provided for moving each of the throttle flaps individually between an open and a closed position.

  • Patent number: 3950228
Abstract: At the machine side of a coke oven, a leveling rod is moved into a coke oven chamber through an opening surrounded by a frame on a removable oven door. A movable hood is positioned to define a horizontal extension to the opening in the coke oven door to thereby enclose a portion of the leveling rod during its movement into the oven chamber. A support member within the hood is arranged below the lower edge of the frame that surrounds the opening in the door. Bracket plates are carried by the support member such that the leveling rod moves upon the top surface of the uppermost plate. A removable bolt is employed to secure the bracket plates to the support member. The number of bracket plates used determines the elevation at which the leveling rod moves into the oven chamber. An extension insert is removably attached to the roof of the hood above the leveling rod.
