More particularly, one embodiment of the metal deposition cell comprising a cell base, an anode, and a cell top. The cell base at least partially defines an interior recess. The anode mounted within the interior recess to the cell base. The cell top is removably mounted to the cell base. In one embodiment, a method of removing a modular metal deposition cell from a deposition cell mount is provided. The modular metal deposition cell comprises a cell top and a cell bottom. The method comprises: unfastening a fastener that secures the cell top to the cell bottom, and also fastens the cell top and the cell bottom to the deposition cell mount. The cell top or the cell bottom are then removed from the deposition cell mount.

The present invention optionally includes an electrolyte storage compartment in the cap.

    Abstract: The present invention provides an improved lock water purifier and method. In a presently preferred embodiment a floating salt housing is provided to produce a high salt concentration salt brine within the salt housing. A plurality of metallic probes are removably positioned within the salt housing. The metallic probes are preferably not connected to a power source but rather react within the salt brine to produce metallic ions. A channel is provided whereby the metallic ions can flow into the body of water. The number of metallic probes can be controlled to thereby control the amount of metallic ions produced. As well, moveable gates can be utilized to control the flow of metallic ions into the body of water. In a preferred embodiment, a chlorine generator is also provided which comprises a power source, preferably a solar power source, which supplies power to a plurality of cell plates.

A metal connection ring is embedded around the outer periphery of the base and is contacted by the cathode. This arrangement is particularly suitable for allowing a thin, flexible disposable cathode to be conveniently removed from the cell by means of the lid, without the user being exposed to contact with the silver or with the solution.

The system preferably is used for oxygen extraction from containers holding oxygen-sensitive contents. The preferred extractor includes an electrochemical cell which has a ion-permeable membrane disposed between two electrodes.

The electrolyzed saline solution is recirculated from the electrodes to the instrument being sterilized. Embodiments of the invention are particularly suited to sterilizing dental drill handpieces without damage to the handpieces.

    Abstract: A scrubber and method for precipitating a sulfide in water which contains hydrogen sulfide or a mercaptan. The second metal is more noble than the first metal. Preferably the anode is iron and the cathode is stainless steel. When so constituted, the anode forms iron oxide which reacts with sulfur from the hydrogen sulfide or the mercaptan to form an iron sulfide precipitate. The anode and cathode may be coplanar and suspended in the water with a free-moving float which facilitates contact of the water with the anode, or may be rods which are tethered and twisted to form a twisted wire pair.

    Abstract: In the recovery of an electrically conductive metal from a liquid containing the metal in solution, a cathode member for deposition of the metal by electrolysis, comprises a carrier sheet with a cathode element of the metal to be recovered, on one side of the sheet; the carrier sheet is of a material from which the metal is readily refinable when smelted with the carrier sheet; the cathode member has particular application for removal of the silver content of fixer solution in photography; suitably the sheet is flexible and has a memory of a planar state, such that on being rolled into a cylindrical tubular configuration, it returns to the planar state unless restrained.

    Abstract: An electrolyzer assembly has an outer, cylindrical dielectric electrolyzer housing member having a top, bottom, and cylindrical side wall. In one embodiment, the housing member has a sealed top, an open bottom for electrolyte entry, and apertures through the side wall near the sealed top permitting flow of electrolyte through the apertures. A cylindrical anode and cathode pair is situated inside the housing member. The cathode is positioned concentrically within the anode. Electrolyte flows in the space between anode and cathode. The anode is spaced apart from the side wall, providing an electrolyte flow path through the resulting cylindrically-shaped space. Electrical connections through the top of the housing member extend downwardly therein to electrical connection elements projecting upwardly from the electrode pair. The assembly provides for ease of cleaning, as well as ease of refurbishing, and operates efficiently and economically in both forced and unforced flow conditions.

The cell contains an anode which is exposed to water or water containing material, a water permeable, ion-conducting separator between the anode from the cathode and a cathode composed of an electrochemically decomposable chemical compound which produces water in the presence of protons and electrons.An exemplary cell contains silver oxide as a principal component of the cathode, water as the principal anode component and a proton conducting membrane. The silver oxide reacts with protons electrically driven through said membrane and electrons from a power-source to form elemental silver and water. Deposition of elemental silver in the cathode compartment is advantageous inasmuch as it improves the electronic conductivity of the material in the cathode compartment. Water, in the anode, decomposes to protons and molecular oxygen while releasing electrons.

The electrical conductivity of the water is increased be adding an ion spender such as sodium carbonate therein. The positive terminal of a direct voltage source is connected to a metal plate such as aluminum plate immersed in the water bath. The precious metal-plated object to be cleaned is connected to the negative pole of the direct voltage source. The direct voltage is adjusted to between 1.5 and 9 V and the object is immersed for a few seconds. A kit for performing the method may be embodied as a battery-powered unit, or it may be provided with an a.c. adapter and an adjusting potentiometer allowing user-adjusted cleaning voltage.
