    Abstract: A method for producing substantially ink-free pulp from recycle printed paper comprising first pulping the recycle paper in a hydrapulper with at least water and an agglomerating agent thereby producing a pulp. Ink particle agglomerates in the pulp are then removed by screening the pulp through at least one screen and by cleaning the pulp in a cyclone cleaner. Pulp together with small ink particles that escape the prior separation stages is then conducted from the cyclone cleaner through a standpipe at a consistency of about or less than 1% where particles of ink associate with small air bubbles and are elevated to the surface of the pulp where they accumulate as a froth which may be removed by overflowing.

The washing filtrate (12) from the washing treatment (3) is cleaned in a filtrate-flotation treatment (4) so that a cleaned fraction (14) can be returned into the useful material (13) of the washing treatment. The so cleaned waste paper fibrous material can be passed to further treatment steps such as flotation, bleaching and/or dispersion. The reject material from the filtrate-flotation (4) is, in one embodiment, again subjected to a flotation treatment.

    Abstract: The invention concerns the recycling of waste paper in a deinking process with flotation with at least one other cleaning stage downstream. According to the invention, selective flotation is performed in multiple stages. After no more than a third flotation stage, the flotation foam collected up to that point is removed and purified by means of flash flotation, which produces sludge, clear water and separated foam that contains the contaminants from the waste paper feed. Subsequently, the sludge is removed from the paper recycling process. Large impurities are removed from the sludge (foam) (except for the foam from up to the three last stages) in up to two washing units (including thickeners) or screen units. The fibers are then separated from the relatively fine contaminants, and these contaminants are primarily removed as sludge from the resulting low-fiber fractions by flash flotation.

    Abstract: A method for the beneficiation of mineral ores by the flotation method whereby a slurry is introduced under pressure into the top of a first column through a downwardly facing nozzle, and air is entrained into the slurry forming a downwardly moving foam bed in the first column. The foam bed passes from the bottom of the first column into a second column where the froth and liquid separate, the froth carrying the values floating upwardly and over a weir and the liquid being drained with the gangue. The liquid/froth interface level in the second column is kept above the bottom of the first column, and the air flow rate into the top of the first column is controlled to keep the first column substantially full of foam.

    Abstract: The flotation apparatus removes ink- and contaminant particles from a fiber stock suspension which is produced during the preparation of waste paper. Admixing of air to the fiber stock suspension is accomplished in stepped diffusors. The fiber stock suspension admixed with air, prior to infeed into a flotation container, is guided through a deflection element effective as an impact mixer and followed by a mixing diffusor having a preferred flow direction. This flotation apparatus is especially suited for eliminating disturbing or spurious substances which are present throughout a relatively wide grain size spectrum. A particularly preferred construction uses one or more closed flotation containers, wherein the air effluxing from the flotation foam can be advantageously re-used for aeration of further infed fiber stock suspension.

    Abstract: The froth flotation apparatus includes a gas bubble-particle contact unit including a mixing structure for breaking a gas into fine bubbles,such as a packed tower packing or mechanical agitator, and a separate phase separation unit. A conditioned aqueous pulp containing a mixture of hydrophobic and hydrophilic particles and a substantially inert gas, such as air, are introduced into and combined in one end of the contact unit and subsequently flow concurrently through the mixing structure, such that the gas is broken into fine bubbles which intimately contact and become attached to the hydrophobic particles. The resulting gas bubble-particle mixture is introduced into the phase separation unit which is operated under substantially quiescent conditions. A concentrate fraction containing primarily hydrophobic particles and a tailing containing primarily hydrophilic particles are discharged from the upper and lower portions of the phase separation unit, respectively.

The apparatus comprises an injector manifold suspended horizontally within the vessel below the bitumen-water interface, said injector manifold having a plurality of equispaced, inwardly facing openings for the inward discharge of oil sands froth into the body of water. The injector ring manifold may also have a plurality of outwardly facing openings for both inward and outward discharge of froth.

    Abstract: A stock liquid is made to flow into a cell through a stock inlet at one end of the cell. The stock liquid is admixed with air bubbles from an air bubble generating device disposed at a lower portion of the cell and extending between the opposite end plates of the cell, thereby forming the stock liquid into a spiral flow. Ink particles are entrapped by the air bubbles to deink the stock liquid and the air bubbles remain as froth over the free surface of the stock liquid. The froth is made to flow down to the froth trough. The deinked stock liquid is discharged to the exterior of the cell through the stock outlet at the other end of the cell.

    Abstract: An apparatus for clarifying water. The apparatus includes a mixing chamber for mixing the water to be clarified with pressurized water and air to obtain a mixture in which particles attached to air bubbles are suspended. The mixing chamber is connected to a flotation tank which holds a body of water whose upper surface is maintained at a predetermined level. The mixture, including the particles attached to air bubbles, is delivered by a distribution pipe from an upper part of the mixing chamber onto the surface of the water in the tank so that the floatables come to a floating position on the surface without causing agitation or turbulence below the surface. A skimmer rake skims the floatables to an outlet where they are removed from the tank leaving the water at the bottom of the tank clarified.

    Abstract: An aperature is formed in the bottom wall of the launder. A downwardly extending container communicates with the aperture. A weir is positioned immediately downstream of the aperture. The container and weir combine to form a separator. In the launder, free water and solids contaminants settle and form a bottom layer of dirty water. The layer is diverted into the container through the aperture and the weir temporarily retains a small head of it. Temporary retention in the separator therefore generates a vertical fluid column comprising an upper layer of relatively clean froth and a lower layer of dirty water, said layers having an ascertainable interface. The elevation of the interface is monitored and contaminated fluid is withdrawn from the container as underflow at a rate controlled to keep the interface elevation substantially constant. The froth overflowing the weir is reduced in water and solids relative to the original froth issuing from the flotation vessel.

    Abstract: A process for removing mineral matter from coal is disclosed. The process involves creating ultrafine coal by pulverizing the coal feed material and mixing it with an aqueous amine solution. The coal/amine solution is fed into a flotation cell and gaseous carbon dioxide is charged into the cell. The carbon dioxide reacts with the amine solution to form bubbles which carry the "clean" coal component of the coal feed material to the top of the cell for subsequent removal from the cell. The bubbles are reduced in size as they move up within the cell. The mineral matter, which is heavier than the clean coal, stays at the bottom of the cell and can be removed separately. The amine and the carbon dioxide used in the process can be recycled. An associated apparatus is also disclosed.

The apparatus includes a flotation column having an upper section, an intermediate section and a lower section, a spray bar, mounted in the intermediate section of the flotation column, for providing a downwardly directed fine mist in the intermediate section of said flotation column, and at least one spray nozzle mounted in the lower section of the flotation column, the at least one spray nozzle provided with aerating means. A method for the separation of the components of a slurry employing the present apparatus is also disclosed.

    Abstract: A process for removing mineral matter from coal is disclosed. The process involves creating ultrafine coal by pulverizing the coal feed material and mixing it with an aqueous amine solution. The coal/amine solution is fed into a flotation cell and gaseous carbon dioxide is charged into the cell. The carbon dioxide reacts with the amine solution to form bubbles which carry the "clean" coal component of the coal feed material to the top of the cell for subsequent removal from the cell. The bubbles are reduced in size as they move up within the cell. The mineral matter, which is heavier than the clean coal, stays at the bottom of the cell and can be removed spearately. The amine and the carbon dioxide used in the process can be recycled. An associated apparatus is also disclosed.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a process and an apparatus for beneficiating a mineral ore, such as phosphate-containing ore, in a substantially vertical column. The feed subjected to the benefication preferably has a particle size of less than 20 mesh. The feed is introduced into the column, containing at least one baffle, into which there is also introduced a gas at the bottom portion thereof and a liquid through at least one column inlet at the top of the column. The baffle and the rates of introduction of the feed, the gas, and the liquid are such as to create relatively high turbulence conditions within the column. The enriched, beneficiated product is removed at the top of the column, while the waste products, such as silica-containing material, in the case of a phosphate ore, are recovered at the bottom of the column.

    Abstract: A defrothing apparatus whose inlet opening of the foamed liquid contained in a foam duct of a primary flotation apparatus is provided in the bottom of the foam duct. Starting from the lower area of the defrothing apparatus, a rotary flow (potential vortex) is generated in the apparatus by a recirculated lqiuid quantity from a secondary flotation apparatus. In the core of the rotary flow the gas quantity (air) is collected and removed through a removal pipe. Consequently, the foamed liquid from the foam duct of the primary flotation stage which is pumped to the secondary flotation stage contains small shares of gas relative to the total quantity of liquid, thereby allowing the pump to be optimally sized of efficiency and better control of the system.

    Abstract: A mixture containing oleophilic surfaced mineral particles and oleophobic gangue particles in an aqueous phase is separated by means of an apertured oleophilic endless sieve supported in a separation zone by a revolving cylindrical cage having apertured sidewalls and supported in a recovery zone by a support roller, each section of sieve surface alternately revolves through the separation zone and recovery zone. The aqueous mixture is introduced as a slurry into the rotating cage. The endless sieve partly covers the outside surface of the cylindrical cage sidewall. An oleophilic adhesive is placed on the sieve as a coating or added to the aqueous slurry in the cage or both. The mixture tumbles inside of the cage and passes through the cage sidewall apertures to the sieve surface. The oleophilic mineral particles of the mixture adhere to the oleophilic adhesive and are captured by the sieve upon contact and conveyed out of the separation zone into the recovery zone.
