  • Patent number: 10464823
Abstract: A system and method for treating contaminated wastewater is provided. The system and method may be used to treat wastewater such as hydraulic fracturing flowback water, which is contaminated with guar gum, similar gelling agents, or other biological polymers. The contaminated wastewater is pressurized and heated and then allowed to spend a residence time in a vessel. The process may be a continuous or a batch process. The exposure to a combination of heat and pressure causes the high molecular weight guar molecules to break down into simple sugars and other smaller, relatively low molecular weight compounds, thereby decreasing the viscosity of the fluid. Once the viscosity is reduced, the flowback water can then be treated for other contaminants using conventional treatment technologies and reused in fracking operations.

  • Patent number: 7722839
Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided to rapidly thaw and heat frozen bags of biological materials, such as plasma. The apparatus has a hollow bladder having a flexible wall that is placed in contact with the bag. A circulation system draws fluid from a reservoir and fills the bladder with the fluid. The circulation system also drains fluid from the bladder. A heater in the reservoir heats the fluid before the fluid enters the bladder. As heated fluid flows through the bladder, heat is transferred through the bladder wall to the plasma bag to thaw the biological material. The bladder wall expands against the plasma bag as the bladder fills with fluid, and contracts from the plasma bag as the bladder is drained. The expansion and contraction of the bladder wall agitates the plasma bag and biological material to accelerate the thawing process.

Abstract: In accordance with all embodiments; an organic/inorganic liquid grease and/or oil removal system that, upon contact with greases and/or oils in, on, or about liquid, gaseous, or upon solid media, instantaneously causes them to become more viscous and collected onto itself by the split-second elimination of heat bound within the greases and/or oils, comprising: A reservoir 40 accommodating a cold fluid cryogen 70. Reservoir 40 comprises a bifacial/multi-functioning, interior/exterior element/wall 69 whose interior side—internal cooling surface 32—contacts cryogen 70, thereby receiving cold, conducting it to its back-to-back, external grease/oil-contacting/extricating surface 10 positioned exterior of reservoir 40. Cooling surface 32 bears a greater overall surface area in direct proportional relationship to, and with, extricating surface 10 that contacts greases/oils adhering thereon.

Abstract: An apparatus, system and method for the continuous flow extraction, collection and analysis of small amounts of energetic substance/s and their reacted/unreacted residue/s in real time are provided. The apparatus includes an agitator that generates a particulate material from a surface. A vacuum gathers particulate material which is provided to a mixing module. The mixing module creates a supercritical matrix containing the particulate matter. A separator separates and removes waste in the supercritical matrix from the supercritical matrix. Concentrated particulate material from the supercritical matrix is provided to a mass spectrometer for analysis and detection of a target material in proximate real-time. In one embodiment, the separator provides the supercritical matrix to a tube arm. The tube arm is heated to reduce solvent in the supercritical matrix. A collector in the tube arm concentrates particulate material, which is volatilized by a laser.

Abstract: The invention relates to a system and method for the hydrothermal oxidation of water-insoluble organic residues. The plant comprises two independent liquid phase feed lines, namely an aqueous phase (1) and a non-water-soluble phase (9). The supercritical conditions in the entrance to the first reactor (10) enable a homogeneous phase to be obtained, in which there are no solubilization problems, thereby enabling the treatment of industrial residues that cannot be treated with standard systems. The inventive system comprises two reactor sections (14 and 18) such that it is possible to inject streams of hydrogen peroxide (11 and 15) in the connections between sections (13 and 17), in order to potentiate the oxidation reaction. The plant is equipped with a heat exchange system (5) in order to make use of the energy generated during the oxidation process, such that the plant operates in autothermal conditions.
