  • Patent number: 11896948
Abstract: A synergistic composition can be used to treat water containing nitrogen compounds and phosphorus compounds. The synergistic composition includes iron filings, clay particles, aluminum particles, and sand particles. The iron filings, clay particles, and aluminum particles act synergistically to remove nitrogen compounds and phosphorus compounds from water. Specifically, the clay particles attract the nitrogen compounds and the phosphorus compounds to be absorbed onto a surface of the iron filings and the clay particles. The aluminum particles react with the nitrogen compounds via an oxidation reaction to form ammonia compounds, and react with the phosphorus compounds to produce aluminum phosphate. As such, the synergistic relationship between the iron filings, clay particles, and aluminum particles remove nitrogen and phosphorus compounds from water and recover the compounds in usable forms, namely, ammonia and aluminum phosphate.

Abstract: A biogas plant produces both methane and liquid fertilizer by fermenting biomass. The plant includes a fermenter, a percolate tank and a sanitation tank located inside the percolate tank. Dry fermentation takes place in the fermenter and generates methane and a percolate. The percolate is circulated between the fermenter and the percolate tank. Percolate that is returned from the percolate tank to the fermenter is sprinkled over the biomass. A portion of the percolate is transferred from the percolate tank into the sanitation tank. The percolate in the sanitation tank is sanitized by heating to a Celsius temperature between 45° and 65° for a period of at least five days. The percolate in the sanitation tank is heated using both a heating device in the sanitation tank as well as heat generated from a thermophilic fermentation reaction occurring in the percolate tank. Abstract: Radioactive strontium is efficiently removed from wastewater containing radioactive strontium. In a treatment method for radioactive strontium-containing wastewater, wastewater containing radioactive strontium and a powdery alkali metal titanate are mixed in a stirrer-equipped reaction tank by stirring such that radioactive strontium in the wastewater is adsorbed on the powdery alkali metal titanate, followed by subjecting the powdery alkali metal titanate having radioactive strontium adsorbed thereon to solid-liquid separation. The radiation dose of treated water can be effectively reduced in such a manner that a powder of an alkali metal titanate is directly added to radioactive strontium-containing wastewater and is dispersed therein and therefore radioactive strontium is efficiently removed by adsorption.

  • Patent number: 7901584
Abstract: A plasma concentrator having a concentrator chamber, concentrator gel beads, a filter, and an agitator. The agitator end is positioned in the concentrator chamber and supported for rotation about its central axis and for reciprocal movement along its central axis. A filter is selected to block effective flow of plasma therethrough under ambient gravity conditions and permit plasma and plasma concentrate flow therethrough under centrifugal forces of the separation gravity. A method concentrates plasma by removing water without significantly denaturing the fibrinogen in the plasma. Then centrifugal force can be applied to the concentrated plasma in an amount sufficient to separate a substantial portion of the plasma concentrate from the beads.

Abstract: An hourglass shaped apparatus for cold brewing coffee, comprising a brew chamber, an extract chamber and a center piece connecting the brew and extract chambers. The extract and brew chambers comprise two ends of the hourglass shaped apparatus and the center piece comprises middle portion. The brew chamber houses a free standing self-contained filter assembly containing coffee grounds inside a micro-fine wire mesh. Water is poured into the brew chamber to generate coffee extract through cold water infusion. After the brewing process, the apparatus is inverted, and the coffee travels into the extract chamber through the center piece for dispensing. Coffee brewed in this manner is less acidic and more flavorful than the conventionally hot-brewed beverage. All the components of the apparatus, the filter assembly, the brew chamber, the extract chamber, and the center tie piece, are detachable.

Abstract: A system and method for treatment of water. An inlet is operative to receive source water having particles therein. A spiral mixer has a defined spiral channel operative to mix the source water with a coagulant material and an alkalinity material. The spiral mixer is formed to perform in-line coagulation and flocculation processes within the defined spiral channel to form aggregated floc particles. A buffer tank is operative to receive the aggregated floc particles from the spiral mixer. Spiral separator segregates contents of the buffer tank into affluent and waste water that has the aggregated floc particles therein. An outlet is operative to provide a first path for the affluent, and a second path for the waste water having the aggregated floc particles.

Abstract: A new device, method, and system are disclosed that provide for removal of undesired materials from a contaminated fluid. Materials present in the fluids are kept in motion in one or more filter cassettes that include disc aerators that improve contact times with the sorbents and that rotate the filter media to pump contaminated water through the filter media for treatment of the contaminated fluids. The device and system provide containment of sorbent fines that keeps the filter media free from clogging.

  • Patent number: 7833410
Abstract: In systems for treating wastewater liquid by utilizing aerobic biological species, the contaminated wastewater stream is pretreated in a dissolved air flotation system to remove suspended solid waste, including large particles such as fats, grease, and physically emulsified oils. The purified wastewater containing dissolved waste is thereafter gasified and further decontaminated in a bioreactor tank. Biological species in the bioreactor tank consume gas and perform bodily functions that converts dissolved waste into easily removable carbon dioxide and suspend solids. Gas consumed by the biological species is replenished by pumping the wastewater though a liquid-gas mixer. A controller regulates the speed of the pump based on real-time gas concentration measurements provided by a corresponding gas probe disposed within the wastewater in the bioreactor tank.

Abstract: An apparatus for the anaerobic digestion of solid waste is disclosed. The apparatus includes a pre-digestion treatment chamber and an anaerobic digester chamber coupled to the pre-digestion treatment chamber. A liquid suspension of solid waste is pretreated under aerobic conditions by heating to a desired pre-digestion temperature. One or more chemical or biological additives are added to the suspension of solid waste to improve the anaerobic digestibility of the solid waste. This may include enzymes to destruct poorly digestible solids and/or materials to provide a desired C:N ratio in the solid waste. The apparatus may include mixers, heaters, chemical or biological additives as needed, various sensors and probes, and a control system to monitor and control the anaerobic digestion process and maintain microbial health of the digester.

Abstract: The invention relates to the control of pH in water where hydroxyl ions are being produced by adding to the water an amount of transition metal salt sufficient to bind with hydroxyl into a slightly soluble or insoluble reaction product, thereby removing sufficient hydroxyl ion from the water to lower the pH thereof. This technique is particularly suitable for pH control in pool or spa water that is sanitized using chemical or electrolytic chlorination, where the sanitation process causes the pH in the water to rise. The invention also relates to apparatus for dispensing water treatment materials to water, and to methods for controlling phosphate levels and algae in water.

  • Patent number: 7615147
Abstract: A water treatment device that chemically treats tidal water. The water may, if desired, be salt water or fresh water. The water treatment device is substantially cylindrical with paddles extending outward from central hubs. The paddles are T-shaped and are perforated. The perforation aids in water treatment by aerating the water as the tide movement turns the paddles. The water treatment device has a central perforated tray that is slidably insertable into the central hubs. The central hubs are open in the center to permit the aerated water from the paddles to come in contact with the water treatment chemicals in the central tray. The perforations of the central tray allow the water treatment chemicals to come into contact with the surrounding area to treat the tidal water.
