Plates Or Frames Patents (Class 210/231)
  • Patent number: 7201845
Abstract: A system for moving a filter or a retainer into or out of a fluid pathway without halting the movement of the fluid in the pathway. When acting as a filtering device, the system includes a filter frame and a drive mechanism for slidingly moving the filter frame on stationary rails that remain in the duct through which the fluid is transferred. When a retainer device, the system includes a retainer and a drive mechanism for slidingly moving retainer on stationary rails that remain in the chamber through which a fluid under treatment passes. The system includes isolation means permitting the filter frame or retainer to pass into or out of the duct or chamber without exhausting the fluid within the duct or chamber. The drive mechanism may be a guillotine damper gate drive, a spindled drive, a hydraulic actuator or other drive means. The filter or the retainer may include a plurality of bays that are rigidly, hingedly, or detachably connected together.

Abstract: The invention relates to a press membrane (9) for a filter plate (1?) of a filter press. Said press membrane consists of a rubber-elastic material and is supported by the filter plate (1?) while supporting a parallel filter cloth (14). Abstract: An apparatus for the separation of fluid mixtures into a permeate and a retentate comprises separation modules each having fluid containment chambers stacked therein. Each fluid containment chamber is defined by a pair of selectively permeable membranes having their active surfaces facing inwardly toward one another, with a gasket sandwiched therebetween in sealing engagement with each membrane. A channelled support plate is positioned adjacent to the outside surface of each membrane. The channels in the support plates fluidly communicate with a housing, thereby allowing negative pressure from the housing to be brought into direct contact with the outside surface of each selectively permeable membrane. The fluid mixture is pumped into each fluid containment chamber at one end and moves across the active surfaces of the membranes toward a retentate receiver positioned at the opposite end. In doing so, permeate is drawn out through both membranes into the channels and the housing.

  • Patent number: 5993661
Abstract: This invention relates to a microporous or macroporous affinity filtration membrane wherein the matrix is composed of chitosan or chitin and the pores are made by dissolution of porogen during the preparation of the membrane. The invention also relates to a method of preparation of the membrane comprising preparing an acidic chitosan solution containing porogen, shaping the suspension into a membrane, and dissolving the porogen by immersing the membrane in an alkaline solution. To prepare chitin membranes, the chitosan membranes are acetylated. The special feature of the membrane is that the pore size can be controlled by varying the size of the porogen. The membranes are suitable for affinity purification of macromolecules.

Abstract: A self supporting filter plate assembly having two opposed screen sections with inwardly shaped deformations which engage each other to maintain a planar surface of the screen sections at a predetermined spacing. The screen sections releasably engage each other. Inwardly directed retaining pins of an exterior frame removably support the screen sections in place within the frame. Each of the screen sections include edges which are bent at 90.degree. with respect to a central planar portion of each screen. The edge portions of the two screen sections interengage with each other by a projection in an inner surface of an edge portion of one screen section engaging with a recess extending from an outer surface of an edge portion of the other screen section. In addition, spaced openings in the edge portions, on opposed side edges of both screen sections, interengage with the inwardly directed retaining pins extending from an inner surface of opposed sides of the frame.

  • Patent number: 5925247
Abstract: Membrane element consisting of carrier disk and membrane cushion for filtering and separating flowing media, especially in devices for filtering and separating fluids by membrane techniques. Aim of the membrane element according to the invention is the essential reduction of the losses of pressure inherent to the modules by eliminating the sharp redirections of the flow by the usual carrier disks and membrane cushions in plate modules. This is achieved by a circular guidance of the flow of the fluid to be separated between carrier disk and membrane cushion. The carrier disk according to the invention is provided with a slit-like passage so that, after a concentric, circular flow over the carrier disk and the corresponding membrane cushion, a guidance of the flow to the next carrier plate level with the correspondingly formed membrane cushion is made possible with minimal loss of pressure and almost without redirections.

  • Patent number: 5855778
Abstract: A filter press having a horizontal stack of filter plate assemblies, in which removal of filter cake is automated by means of a vibration/shifter carriage that can be moved in steps along a stack of filter plates after a press closing head has been retracted. At each step, the carriage opens up a group of filter plates. The plates are vibrated vertically by cams carried by the carriage. The vibrating action alternately tensions and relaxes the filter cloth for dislodging accumulated filter cake. An improved cylinder and ram arrangement for actuating the closing head is also disclosed and comprises oppositely acting cylinder and ram units carried by an intermediate travelling cylinder carriage. The arrangement achieves the advantages of a telescopic cylinder and ram unit, but at lower cost.

  • Patent number: 5836934
Abstract: A blood processing system and associated method include a first variable volume chamber to hold blood and a second variable volume chamber to hold additive solution for blood. The system and method further employ a separation device to remove undesired material from blood. An actuated element exerts external force simultaneously upon both first and second variable volume chambers to expel a first flow of blood from the first variable volume chamber and a second flow of additive solution from the second variable volume chamber. The system and method mix outside the first and second variable volume chambers the blood flow with the flow of additive solution to create a mixed flow comprising blood and additive solution. The system and method direct the mixed flow of blood and additive solution through a filter to remove undesired matter from the blood.

The front and back panels of the filter plate are composed of thermoplastic synthetic resin and are bond to each other through a series of prefabricated openings in the steel sheet. The inner steel sheet of the filter plate of the invention further contains at least one exit port hole and a drainage channel leading from the port hole. The filter plate further contains a feed port (passageway) extending from the exterior of the front panel to the back panel. The thermoplastic synthetic resin encompasses all of the exposed surfaces of the filter plate--all of the steel lining the prefabricated openings, port holes and drainage channel being encased by thermoplastic synthetic resin. The filter plate of the invention is produced via an injection molding process wherein a prefabricated steel sheet is first inserted between the upper and lower regions of a mold.

Abstract: A filter for cross-flow filtration of a fluid containing suspended or emulsified substance is constructed of equally dimensioned plates. Between the plates there are passages for retentate and permeate flow. The plates have in- and outlet openings to form collection channels, through which unfiltered fluid is led to and retentate and permeate is led away from the passages. There are plates (1) (membrane plates) comprising a membrane of material which is chemically and physically inert to the fluid, which membrane has a pore size of 0.1-50 .mu.m through which membrane the permeate passes. There are also plates (2) which are impervious to the fluid. Retentate (6) and permeate (8) passages are formed between the plates (1, 2), which all have three openings (3, 4, 5). The retentate passages (6) are connected to the channel for unfiltered fluid and to the channel for retentate and sealed against the channel for permeate.
