An insert in the form of an elongated member is positioned in the bottom, back downstream side of the channel and forms a quiescent condition in the bottom of said channel when the basket is exposed to a flowing water stream.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1999Date of Patent: February 13, 2001Assignee: Niagara Mohawk Power CorporationInventors: Wesley A. Patent number: 6168724Abstract: A dynamic swirl filter assembly having a rotatable filter housing for applying a fluid sheer layer to the surface of the filters therein to enhance filtration. The dynamic swirl filter assembly utilizes a rotatable filter housing to provide a fluid shear boundary layer immediately adjacent the surfaces of a plurality of stationary disc type filtering elements. The fluid shear boundary layer generates lift, thereby preventing particulate and/or colloidal matter of a given size from contacting the surface of the plurality of stationary disc type filter elements.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 1998Date of Patent: January 2, 2001Assignee: Pall CorporationInventor: Mark F. Patent number: 6077428Abstract: The invention relates to a filter for the deposition filtration of liquids such as juice, wine, beer or the like. A filter packet (28) of plate-type filter elements (25), stacked one on top of the other, is disposed in a container (3), each filter element (25) having a hub (26) that is oriented in its position by a shaft (12) penetrating the filter packet (28). In the hub (26), there is provided an axial inlet line (36) for the material (18) to be filtered, which inlet line feeds by a plurality of inflow channels (46) which are situated to be uniformly distributed in the peripheral direction of each hub (26) and which lead substantially radially outwards. The inflow channels (46) open into an annular distributor space (47), from which the material to be filtered flows out. The material to filtered flows out via an outlet gap (45) situated above the inflow channels (46), radially into the space (29) between adjacent filter elements (25).Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 1997Date of Patent: June 20, 2000Assignee: Schenk Filterbau Gesellschaft Mit Beschraenkter HaftungInventors: Dietmar Oechsle, Boris Gehring, Ludgar Gottkehaskamp, Wolfgang Baur, Josef Ziller, Wolfgang Diemer, Dieter Kress

Patent number: 6033566Abstract: A filter system for continuously removing solid matter from a wastewater is provided. The flow of wastewater is automatically alternated between a pair of filter chambers, each of which contain a filter assembly, upon the filter assemblies reaching a predetermined spent condition. As the wastewater is being introduced into one of the filter chambers, the filter assembly in the other filter chamber is automatically backwashed and readied for another filtering cycle. Each filter assembly includes a filter element coated with a diatomaceous earth filter media through which the wastewater is drawn by creating a vacuum downstream of the filter assembly.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1997Date of Patent: March 7, 2000Assignee: JTJ Systems, Inc.Inventors: James B. Patent number: 6030532Abstract: This centrifugal apparatus comprises a primary frusto-conical filter screen rotating about a vertical axis, which is closed at its smaller diameter end and which is surrounded at its larger diameter upper end by a flat horizontal imperforate ring. A secondary cylindrical filter screen is fixed to and upstands from the periphery of the flat imperforate ring. The solid-liquid mixture is fed to the bottom of the primary filter screen and moves up under centrifugal force, the liquid being filtered and discharged into a surrounding casing. The solids move onto the ring and the liquid is further filtered through the secondary filter screen which retains the solids, being cylindrical. After the desired humidity content of the solids is reached, a scraper is lowered onto the ring to scrape the surface of the same and also the inner surface of the cylindrical secondary filter screen to remove the solids.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 1998Date of Patent: February 29, 2000Assignee: 9053-5998 Quebec Inc.Inventor: Jean-Pierre Racine

Patent number: 6007723Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus for processing fluid for separating any component mixed or dissolved in a fluid and a method for producing a separated fluid. The present invention provides an apparatus for processing fluid which does not require any complicated manifolds in such a way that a plurality of cylindrical vessels each having a plurality of flow ports on the outer peripheral surface thereof at positions near both ends thereof, respectively, and incorporating therein a series of separating elements are arranged substantially parallel to one another with the flow ports of the adjoining cylindrical vessels held connected face-to-face with each other. Further, a method for producing separated fluid at a low cost can be provided by using the above-described apparatus for processing fluid.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1997Date of Patent: December 28, 1999Assignee: Toray Industries, Inc.Inventors: Hiroyuki Ikada, Takao Tanno, Hiromu Takeuchi

Patent number: 5993674Abstract: Rotary disc filtration devices and filtration processes using those devices are disclosed. The devices have one or more fluid filtration gaps into which fluid to be filtered into permeate and retentate is placed. Each fluid filtration gap is defined by a disc and a filter, one of which rotates with respect to the other. The filter is carried on a filter support member. Fresh feed is introduced to each fluid filtration gap near the longitudinal axis of the shaft on which the discs are rotated. Holes through the disc in the active area of the disc, which is the area opposite the filter, counteract the tendency of the disc and filter to move towards one another.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 1998Date of Patent: November 30, 1999Assignee: Membrex, Inc.Inventors: Philip M. Patent number: 5900142Abstract: The process, particularly useful in blood oxygenators, whereby a differential velocity between a fluid and a diffusing surface of hollow tubes by a rotating member such that the boundary layer is perturbed enhancing the coefficient of mass and thermal transfer. The differential velocity is achieved by rotating hollow tubes containing one fluid in a second fluid, or by apposing a rotating member to the surface of the stationary hollow tubes.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1997Date of Patent: May 4, 1999Inventors: James V.
