  • Patent number: 4740311
Abstract: A mixture containing a viscous oil phase and an aqueous phase is separated by means of an apertured oleophilic endless sieve supported in a separation zone by a revolving cylindrical cage having apertured sidewalls and supported in a recovery zone by a support roller, each section of sieve surface alternately revolves through the separation zone and recovery zone. The mixture is introduced into the rotating cage in the separation zone. The endless sieve partly covers the outside surface of the cylindrical cage sidewall. The mixture tumbles inside of the cage and passes through the cage sidewall apertures to the sieve surface. The oil phase of the mixture is captured by the sieve upon contact and is conveyed out of the separation zone.In the recovery zone, oil phase is removed from the sieve by squeezing the oil phase on the sieve between two rollers at least one of which is oleophilic.

Abstract: Apparatus for thickening a suspension of pulp material employs a single pair of liquid-impervious rolls and a single loop of wire trained around both rolls which are spaced from each other in substantially the same horizontal plane. The pulp stock to be thickened is delivered into the wedge zone defined by the upper wire run approaching the top of one roll and the surface of that roll, so that the pulp is trapped between the wire and roll as it travels around the roll with the wire, and the rolls are driven at sufficient speed to develop centrifugal forces which cause liquid to be expressed through the wire from the pulp trapped against the roll.

  • Patent number: 4686005
Abstract: A method of, and washing machine or washer for, washing stock suspensions, wherein a rotatable cylinder having a solid smooth surface is encircled along a portion of its circumference by a movable endless wire or filter band. The stock suspension to be dewatered and washed is infed by a flat jet nozzle between the rotatable solid cylinder and the movable endless wire. The fiber web formed between the rotatable solid cylinder and the movable endless wire has a weight of less than 100 grams per square meter, preferably 30 to 70 grams per square meter. The wire speed and the circumferential speed of the rotatable solid cylinder is in the order of about 400 to 1,200 meters per minute. After through-flow of the stock suspension between the rotatable solid cylinder and the movable endless wire, the dewatered and washed fiber material is removed from the movable endless wire and the rotatable solid cylinder, respectively, collected in a collecting container and delivered for further processing.

  • Patent number: 4681033
Abstract: In a belt press of the type used to dewater heavy slurries, an improved belt drive system is provided. The upper belt is driven by at least two rollers, one of which is situated in the dewatering section wherein the upper and lower belts are squeezed and traveling together. The improved drive arrangement provides a more uniformly increasing tension in the belt as it passes through the dewatering section than in such presses heretofore. Further because the lower belt is at least partially driven by its frictional engagement with the upper belt, through the sandwiched slurry, the synchronization of the belt speeds is improved. Further improved control of the belt press performance is provided by means for sensing the speeds of the belts and responsive means for regulating the belt tensioning systems accordingly.

  • Patent number: 4597864
Abstract: An apparatus for continuously removing waste materials from a water stream. The apparatus includes a rotating screen assembly formed by a plurality of articulated "L"-shaped links that form separate, laterally spaced closed loops. The space between the loops of links defines the maximum size of material that can pass through the apparatus without being removed from the stream. The respective truncate portions of the "L"-shaped links facilitate the lifting of the debris from the stream. The screen assembly is rotated by motor-driven sprocket segments that are positioned at the discharge end of the apparatus. These segments substantially occupy the spaces between the links when the links travel past the segments, and the occupation of the spaces by the segments displaces the waste materials from the spaces and dislodges the materials from the links as well so that the materials may fall under the influence of gravity to a receptacle.

  • Patent number: 4444660
Abstract: This invention relates to a device at presses for dewatering materials such as peat, digested sludge and other fiber material, which device comprises a belt, which in cooperation with at least one press roll is arranged to apply a press pressure to a material introduced between belt an roll. Certain problems exist here in achieving a high and evenly distributed press pressure over the whole belt width, but this and other problems are solved according to the invention in such a way that the belt consists of a number of separate belt elements (19) located beside each other, each with a cross sectional form decreasing from the side (20) facing the material and with edge portions (23) being in contact with each other, which portions are so elastic that they are opened by the material exposed to the press pressure for discharge of water pressed out of the material.

Abstract: Disclosed is the preparation of micro-bits of expanded styrene-polymers and of expanded polyolefins by comminuting the styrene-polymer or polyolefin in a particular combination of comminuting steps in a suitable comminutor that can provide that combination of steps and in the presence of water as a cooling agent. The polymer micro-bits, which are produced as an aqueous slurry, may be rendered dry-to-the-touch by vacuum filtration followed by passage through a filter press.

  • Patent number: 4421647
Abstract: An indexable filter web is advanced downwardly into and then upwardly out of a pool of dirty coolant by a perforated flexible belt. Rotatable wheels shape the belt and the web into a circular configuration with the bottom of the web defining the bottom of a clean coolant pool located inside of the web and within the dirty coolant pool. The pressure of the coolant in the dirty pool forces the dirty coolant through the web, the coolant being filtered by the web and flowing into the clean pool for subsequent discharge into a clean tank. The sides of the clean pool are defined in part by stationary ring-like elements which coact with the side edges of the belt to form grooves for receiving the side margins of the web. The pressure of the dirty coolant forces the side margins of the web into the grooves and causes the side margins of the web to seal themselves to the ring-like elements so that coolant is prevented from flowing into the clean pool without passing through and being filtered by the web.

  • Patent number: 4420402
Abstract: A method and apparatus for dewatering a slurry of fine particles including a dewatering table and a forming fabric passed across the table. Vacuum is applied to the table and the forming fabric. A first slurry of particles is introduced through a primary headbox to the forming fabric. A second slurry of finer particles is introduced through a secondary headbox to the forming fabric. The primary and secondary headboxes are positioned relative to each other and the table so that the first slurry is introduced to the forming fabric before the second slurry as the fabric moves across the table. Vacuum is applied to the first slurry to form a mat of first slurry particles upon which the second slurry of finer particles is deposited to be dewatered thereby minimizing the loss of fine particles through the forming fabric and maximizing the amount of retained dewatered particles.

  • Patent number: 4341628
Abstract: A belt pressure filter comprises a gravity dewatering zone for dewatering a sludge as a function of the gravity and a forced dewatering zone for a forced dewatering of the sludge by means of external pressure. An endless filter belt travels from the gravity dewatering zone to the forced dewatering zone. The coagulated sludge is supplied onto the filter belt by means of the gravity dewatering zone. Information representing the level of the sludge deposited on the belt is obtained as an information concerning the dewatering ability of the coagulated sludge supplied onto the filter belt. The traveling speed of the filter belt is calculated and controlled on the basis of the above described level information which represents the layer thickness and hence also the solids concentration. The optimum amount of a dosage of a coagulating agent is determined based on the traveling speed of the filter belt as calculated.
