The variable duty cycle may be adjusted manually or automatically based on the temperature of the heating element, or tip. Additionally, the voltage and/or current to the heating element may be adjusted, either manually or automatically, for more rapid recovery during high usage periods. Power is not supplied to the heating element when the battery is in a first position, but power is supplied to the heating element when the battery is moved to a second position. The housing assembly may include a biasing member in contact with the battery such that the biasing force of the biasing member must be overcome to move the battery from the first position to the second position and thus energize the heating element.

Abstract: The Retractable Cauterizing Knife is a handyman's tool which combines the utility of a pocket knife with the power of a cautery. It has a cautery filament installed on the cutting edge of the blade with wiring leading through the shaft of the blade to a AA-size battery pack which also serves as the handle of the knife. With just two standard AA-size batteries, the cautery filament can heat to a scorching, red-hot 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit. The cautery can be activated only when the knife is in the extended and locked back position, and a spring-loaded switch is pressed. Therefore, the knife is extremely safe and will not turn on if left alone or dropped. It has unlimited utility, and is particularly valuable for the handyman, cook, and hobbyist.

Abstract: A soldering apparatus with a safety device which operates automatically when a soldering iron is left in its on condition for a given period of time. A vibration sensor is attached to the soldering iron to sense vibrations of the soldering iron during soldering work. A heater control circuit is provided to be switched to a low-temperature mode when a period of time for which the vibration sensor does not sense the vibrations of the soldering iron continuously exceeding a set value, thereby maintaining the soldering iron at a predetermined low temperature in this situation.

Abstract: A portable electric heater which can be used with different power supplies and can also be used as a lamp. The heater includes a compact housing having a top panel and a bottom panel and at least two removable heating elements mounted within the housing. The heater may be connected to different electrical power supplies having different voltages. A switch is provided to connect one or the other of the two heating elements to the electrical power supply, depending on the voltage of the power supply. An adjustable thermostat is provided to turn off the heating elements to prevent the heater from overheating. The heating elements may be light bulbs in which case the heater also includes a sliding door which may be opened in order to use the heater as a lamp.

  • Patent number: 5757165
Abstract: A solid state control circuit controls handlebar heaters on a snowmobile or similar responding loads. Circuit is supplied by AC voltage with variations in frequency and waveform of the AC input. A portion of this input is rectified and compared with a rectified portion of the output voltage. The difference between these two signals is used to supply two amplifying devices. A control signal to a switching device selectively connects one polarity of the AC to the load. The circuit is adapted to be disabled by the application of an external voltage typically from a brake light switch and bulb. The opposite polarity of the waveform is controlled from the AC to the load by sensing the DC component across the load and using a second switching device to drive this DC value to a negligible value. Components are incorporated that are sensitive to temperature and also waveform to produce higher output heating at high vehicle speed and lower operating ambient temperatures or airflows.

  • Patent number: 5602429
Abstract: The invention is directed to a switch arrangement for signaling the movement and the inclination of the switch arrangement which is accommodated in a housing. The switch arrangement (2) includes a first switch (12) configured as an On/Off switch and a second switch (10) connected to a capacitor (K). The switches include each conductor portions (22, 24) adapted to be connected to each other by a movable actuating member (18). While the switch (12) signals both the movement and the inclination of the arrangement (2), the switch (10) signals a movement of the arrangement (2) by issuing pulse signals. In the position of the rest of the actuating member (18), none of the switches is activated. In one configuration of the switch arrangement, the actuating member is guided in a cutout whose sides extend towards each other in a converging fashion.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for heating a solid material and dispensing the material as a liquid. A central housing has an inlet, a dispensing orifice and a flow passage extending through the central housing for passing the material from the inlet to the dispensing orifice. A susceptor and induction coil are disposed within the flow passage for immersion within the material after it is liquified. The susceptor includes a conically shaped flow section which extends across the flow passage, and a plurality of flow ports for passing the material. The susceptor further includes a cylindrical section which extends downstream from the flow section for receiving the material from the flow section and passing material to the dispensing orifice. The induction coil is aligned with and spaced downstream from the flow section of the susceptor, surrounding part of the susceptor for electromagnetically inducing electric currents to flow within the flow section.

Abstract: A control circuit for a vacuum desoldering apparatus includes a timing mechanism to ensure that vacuum is maintained for a necessary minimum amount of time, even if a vacuum actuation switch of the desoldering tool is prematurely deactivated by the operator. If the operator presses the vacuum actuator switch for a period of time longer than the predetermined minimum time, vacuum will flow until the switch is released. However, if the operator actuates the switch very briefly, that is, for less than the predetermined minimum vacuum actuation time, the vacuum supply is maintained in an activated state for the predetermined minimum time.
