  • Patent number: 8527063
Abstract: A system to induce hyperthermia in a selected portion of the body utilizes permanent magnets mounted on a variable speed motor. A conductive button is positioned at a location proximate the target tissue to be heated, such as a tumor. The magnetic rotor assembly is positioned at a selected distance from the conductive button and rotated at a desired frequency to produce a changing permanent magnetic field that induces an eddy current on the surface of the conductive button. A temperature sensor may be positioned near the conductive button as a feedback mechanism to a control circuit. At higher magnetic polarity frequencies, the conductive button may be implemented in the form of metallic nanoparticles. In this embodiment, the nanoparticles may include molecular elements that selectively bind with the target tissue and thereby accumulate at the target tissue prior to the introduction of the rotating magnetic field.

Abstract: An induction heating unit for inductively heating hair rollers has a base (2) which is capable of resting stably on a horizontal surface and a well (4) for receiving the hair roller. The well has a bottom wall and a side wall and is inclined relative to the base (2). A coil of wire (18) is disposed around the perimeter of the well (4), and an electronic controller is arranged to supply a varying current to the coil by means of pulses applied to a semiconductor switch. Different size rollers will always occupy a position against the side wall at the lowest part of the well. A sensor (21) is disposed in the lowest part of the well adjacent to the side wall to monitor the temperature or weight of the rollers and vary the amount of heating for different sizes of roller. The size of the roller may also be determined by applying an electrical pulse to the coil (18) and monitoring the ringing effect produced in the coil.

Abstract: A phase transition golf ball comprises a phase transition material. The phase transition material may optionally include a microwave susceptor or an induction susceptor. The phase transition material preferably comprises an ethylene acid copolymer, or an ionomer of an ethylene acid copolymer. The performance of the phase transition golf ball, for example its hardness or compression, is adjusted by inducing a complete or partial phase transition in the phase transition material. The extent of the adjustment in performance is correlated with the extent of the phase transition. Preferably, the phase transition is reversible and repeatable and takes place at temperatures that might be achieved through the use of common household appliances. Also preferably, the phase transition material returns to its original state over an extended period, for example hours or days.
