Since the pressure is the same on the top and bottom of the inner lid, the inner lid does not flex and thus does not rub against the vacuum chamber when the vacuum chamber is pumped down or vented up.

    Abstract: The joint between two nearly rigid, mating walls has a tongue on one wall's surface and a groove on the other wall's surface which have special cross section shapes cooperating to resist penetration of the joint by fluids such as water. At least one of the walls is formed of a plastic material which deforms under compressive loading. The shape of the tongue includes sides thereof which intersect the end to form corners defining the longitudinal edges of the tongue. The groove has walls which converge toward each other at the bottom of the groove from a mouth wider than the width of the end of the tongue. The shape of the groove forms a line of contact with each of the tongue's corners when the tongue is mated with the groove. During assembly, the corners of the tongue are forced into the walls of the groove by some type of clamping mechanism so as to at least slightly deform at least one of the tongue and groove.

    Abstract: A portable liquid container has a four-sided shell enclosed by a bottom wall and a top wall. The bottom wall is formed by four triangular portions sloping downwardly to a delivery opening. The top wall has an upwardly sloping configuration with an enlarged opening in the middle thereof. The opening is normally covered by a lid. Two lifting channels and a delivery pipe and valve are located on the underside of the bottom wall. Four legs attached to the bottom wall support the container at a height sufficient to clear the delivery pipe and lifting channels. Leg positioners are located at the upper corners of the container and are arranged to receive the legs of a second like container stacked on top of a first container.

A carrier member (25) through which the securing device extends is urged towards the flange (9) of the head such that the O-ring seal (23) is urged into sealing engagement between the securing device (17) and the flange (9) of the head. The carrier member (25) defines a conical recess (35) for reception therein of the O-ring seal (23) such that when the carrier member (25) is urged towards the flange (9) of the head, the O-ring seal (23) is distorted by reaction between the carrier member (25), the securing device (17) and the flange (9) of the head so the securing device (17) and the flange (9) of the head are sealed relative to each other.

    Abstract: An explosion proof electrical enclosure has a relieved joining flange at the junction between the cover and the body of the enclosure. The relieved portion provides an area reducing the bolt load in the event the enclosure is subjected to an internal explosion. As a result, fewer bolts may be used to join the enclosure, reducing the cost of the enclosure, increasing the convenience of access to the enclosure and reducing the labor required to remove or install the cover. The cover of the enclosure has increased stiffening structure at the corners so that the bolts in the corners of the enclosure may be eliminated.

To obviate imparting stresses to the sewing machine frame as result of clamping a warped cover thereto, surfaces are provided at locations on the frame and cover chosen so that the surfaces engage simultaneously in spaced localized areas when the warped cover is positioned loosely over the frame opening. Fastening means located within the localized areas of engagement of these surfaces clamp the cover securely in place without disturbing the warp.

    Abstract: Fluid cylinder of the repairable type having a plurality of tie rod members to retain a tubular member between a pair of end cap members is constructed so that the O-rings or gaskets normally used to seal the tubular member to the end caps can be eliminated. The tubular member is formed of a material such as stainless steel which is harder and has a higher yield strength that the material of the end caps, which is preferably an aluminum alloy. The mating surfaces are machined to be very smooth and flat so that the relatively thin wall of the tube will cause deformation of the end caps within their elastic limit, thus providing a metal to metal seal which permits the parts of the cylinder to be assembled and reassembled without danger of leakage. A surface finish on the mating parts of 32 microinches appears to be quite satisfactory.

    Abstract: A toxic substance extraction cell includes a chamber for housing a heated solvent, a pair of gaskets adapted to be seated on the solvent housing between which is clamped a specimen to be tested; the space between the gaskets being liquid tight, and a cover for clamping the gaskets to the solvent housing. After assembly of the cell with the preheated solvent in the housing and the specimen to be tested between the gaskets, the cell is inverted and supported on a plurality of legs provided on the cover. The solvent is thus placed in contact with the specimen in order to dissolve any toxic substances contained within the specimen. The cell is then reinverted and supported on a suitable stand and allowed to cool, disassembled, and the solvent removed and tested for toxic residue.
