Patent number: 6688492Abstract: A valve assembly can automatically dispense aerosol content from an aerosol container at predetermined intervals without the use of electric power. A diaphragm at least partially defines an accumulation chamber that receives gas propellant from a portion of the can during an accumulation phase. Once the internal pressure of the accumulation chamber reaches a predetermined threshold, the diaphragm moves, carrying with it a seal so as to unseal an outlet channel, and thereby initiate a spray burst of the main active chemical. The diaphragm assumes its original position when the pressure within the accumulation chamber falls below a threshold pressure.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2002Date of Patent: February 10, 2004Assignee: S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc.Inventors: Thomas Jaworski, Donald J. Shanklin, Nathan R. Westphal, David J. Houser

Publication number: 20030230603Abstract: A metering valve assembly comprising a ferrule and a valve housing defining an internal cavity. The valve housing accommodates an annular flange and a compression spring therein with a valve gasket closing the internal cavity. The valve housing is attached to the ferrule such that a stem portion of the valve stem protrudes through apertures provided in both the valve gasket and the ferrule. A stem portion has a discharge passageway which is normally closed by the valve gasket. Either an undersurface of the annular flange or a mating surface of the valve housing is provided with a compressible sealing member while the other is provided with an annular edge. The compressible sealing member and the annular edge form a seal therebetween, when the valve stem is sufficiently depressed, to partition the interior cavity into a metering chamber and a separate filling chamber whereby product may only be dispensed solely from the metering chamber when a product flow path is established.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 4, 2003Publication date: December 18, 2003Inventor: Jeremy P. Patent number: 6638495Abstract: Stabilized dispersions are provided for the delivery of a bioactive agent to the respiratory tract of a patient. The dispersions preferably comprise a plurality of perforated microstructures dispersed in a suspension medium that typically comprises a hydrofluoroalkane propellant. As density variations between the suspended particles and suspension medium are minimized and attractive forces between microstructures are attenuated, the disclosed dispersions are particularly resistant to degradation, such as, by settling or flocculation. In particularly preferred embodiments, the stabilized dispersions may be administered to the lung of a patient using a metered dose inhaler.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 2001Date of Patent: October 28, 2003Assignee: Nektar TherapeuticsInventors: Jeffry G. Publication number: 20030106912Abstract: A valve assembly can automatically dispense aerosol content from an aerosol container at predetermined intervals without the use of electric power. A diaphragm at least partially defines an accumulation chamber that receives aerosol content from the can during an accumulation phase. Once the internal pressure of the accumulation chamber reaches a predetermined threshold, the diaphragm moves axially, carrying with it a leg so as to unseal an outlet, and thereby initiate a spray burst. A pawl extends from the diaphragm, and engages a retention surface to resist movement of the diaphragm and prolong the accumulation phase. The diaphragm assumes its original position when the pressure within the accumulation chamber falls below a threshold pressure.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 13, 2001Publication date: June 12, 2003Inventors: Tor H. Publication number: 20020158088Abstract: A valve assembly is disclosed for use in an aerosol spray can capable of spraying viscous materials or materials with large particulates without clogging or packing like traditional aerosol spray cans designed for spraying texture materials. The valve opening may be located at substantially any point between the bottom and the top of the container. The valve assembly includes a side-fitting dip tube and a side-feeding mechanism, whereby texture material is dispensed when a central channel is aligned with a side conduit that is in flow communication with the dip tube. This allows highly-viscous materials, such as a fire suppressant material, or materials having large particulates, such as stucco, to be sprayed from an aerosol spray can without clogging. The valve assembly also includes a guiding mechanism to ensure alignment of the central channel and the side conduit in the actuated position.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 18, 2002Publication date: October 31, 2002Applicant: SPRAYTEX INC.Inventor: John R.
