Abstract: A horizontal continuous caster includes a tundish supporting a quantity of molten metal together with a cooled mold and conventional casting movement apparatus. The interface between the cooled mold and the tundish is provided by an improved tundish nozzle having a fabrication which locates the contact area between the nozzle and the cooled mold surfaces to the nozzle periphery thereby locating heat transfer between the mold and the molten metal within the tundish nozzle at the outer portion of the nozzle. The nozzle structure creates peripheral contact area and insulative air spaces between the nozzle and mold surfaces. The improved insulative properties of the nozzle construction in turn facilitates the use of higher strength, longer wear materials for the tundish nozzle.

Abstract: A vessel used for containing molten metal, e.g. a trough section for conveying molten metal from one location to another. The vessel has a refractory liner made of at least two refractory liner units positioned end to end, with a joint between the units, the units each having an exterior surface and a metal-contacting interior surface. A housing at least partially surrounds the exterior surfaces of the refractory liner units with a gap present between the exterior surfaces and the housing. Molten metal confinement elements, impenetrable by molten metal, are positioned on opposite sides of the joint within the gap, at least below a horizontal level corresponding to a predetermined maximum working height of molten metal held within the vessel in use, to partition the gap into a molten metal confinement region between the elements and at least one other region that may be used to hold equipment such as electrical heaters that may be damaged by contact with molten metal.

Abstract: The die casting machine comprises a mold closing actuator capable of selectively inducing a closing pressure on first and second platens for forcing them towards a closed position in which their mold portions are pressed against each other along a parting line. An injection sleeve is movable relative to the mold portions between a distal position in which the injection sleeve and the mold portions are spaced apart; and an injection position in which the injection sleeve engages the mold portions at an inlet opening when the first and second platens are in their closed position. The injection sleeve applies a transverse contact pressure when it engages the mold portions. The closing pressure is unevenly distributed on the platens so as to compensate the transverse contact pressure to have a resulting effective molding pressure on the mold portions that is substantially evenly distributed across the parting line.
