Abstract: A method for cutting the edges of a continuous glass ribbon (10), moving at a speed VR, comprising a longitudinal marking stage which generates a marking line, in particular using a cutting wheel (11), a transverse marking stage, and a subsequent transverse breaking stage. The inventive method also comprises an intermediary stage between the longitudinal marking stage and the transverse marking stage consisting in generating at least one longitudinal fissure (32) through at least a substantial part of the thickness of the continuous glass ribbon, or through the entire thickness of the continuous glass ribbon, on the basis of the marking line (30), and in spreading said longitudinal fissure at a speed VF, which is more or less equal to but in the opposite direction to the speed VR of the moving continuous glass ribbon. The invention also relates to a device designed to carry out said method. The glass plates cut using the inventive method have edges, advantageously, without any major defects.

  • Patent number: 7107873
Abstract: Disclosed is a device and method for removing the lid of an inkjet cartridge. The device holds the cartridge within two jaws, which secure only the bottom of the cartridge. A driving mechanism is used to pop off the top of the cartridge in order that it may be refilled. The driver is J-shaped and has long and short prongs connected by a cross member. A screw within a bulkhead is used to push the driver from the back. This causes the long prong to bear against the top of the cartridge to remove it. The short prong assists in guiding the driver. A spring pushes back on the driver the further it is driven. This enables the user to retract the driving member once the top of the cartridge has been removed. A shelf is formed on all of the jaws of the holder. One jaw has an overhang portion which, with the shelf, forms a channel. Many commercially available cartridges are configured with a rib at their midsection. The shelf and channel act to receive this rib so that the cartridge may be held securely.

Abstract: A method for producing glass plates of any desired contour from sheet glass, comprising the following steps: scribing scribe lines into a least one face of the sheet glass along the contour down to a depth T, using a cutting device, and positioning the glass plate on a support. The inventive method is further characterized in that a defined force F is applied to the sheet glass so that it breaks along the scribe lines, said break extending through the entire thickness of the sheet glass. The flat glass may be sandwiched between two flexible plates prior to being placed on a base pad and being subjected to the breaking force.

  • Patent number: 6962279
Abstract: A method and apparatus for separating glass panels that minimizes process failures and improves separation process consistency by utilizing a separation handle which applies the minimal pressure necessary to remove the edge portion from the glass panel. The glass panel is cut along the score line, which outlines the edge portions of the glass panel to be removed. The panel is placed upon the separating apparatus, which pumps nitrogen along the underside of the glass panel, causing the glass panel to float above the apparatus. Locating pins are inserted to position the panel on the stage. Once the glass panel is in place, a vacuum sucks the panel against the stage, holding the panel tightly against the stage. The separation handle is then inserted over the edge portion to be removed. A measured force is applied to the handle, with the force incrementally increased until the slow, controllable separation of the edge is achieved. This level of force is maintained until separation is complete.

Abstract: A tube cutting machine comprises a tube secured in a chuck tightened against an outer tube wall and by a mandrel expanded within the tube against the tube inner wall opposite the chuck. A blade with a conical body side on the tube body side advances into the tube at the body side angle, eliminating longitudinal force against the tube body and accumulation of tube material on the blade body side. In alternative embodiments, either the tube or the blade can rotate. As the blade edge enters the tube wall, the blade end side, opposite the body side is also conical and pushes the tube cut portion longitudinally away from the tube body, causing the tube before the blade to neck under the longitudinal force imposed by the blade end side. The blade is reversed when the neck weakens and is unable support the tube cut portion but has not yet broken, referred to as the failure point. The blade is then withdrawn and the neck is snapped off. The failure point is detected by a rod urged transversely against the tube end.

To part the laminated substrate made of a first substrate and a second substrate into a plurality of substrates used for the liquid crystal cell, the scribe line is formed on one substrate out of the first substrate and second substrate along a boundary of the substrate used for the liquid crystal cell and multiple parting force is applied by timesharing to the other substrate out of the first and second substrates along the scribe line.

Abstract: An adapter for an optical fiber cleaver for cleaving optical fiber. The optical fiber cleaver includes an opening therein for receiving a connector ferrule of a first category fiber connector containing an unsheathed optical fiber end portion extending therebeyond. The optical fiber cleaver is designed to cleave a portion of the unsheathed optical fiber end portion extending beyond the connector ferrule. The adapter has a tail piece which can hold an unsheathed optical fiber end portion to be cleaved to a selected length prior to insertion into a second category fiber connector. The tail piece has a diameter similar to the ferrule for insertion into the cleaver opening and a length selected to produce a cleaved unsheathed optical fiber end portion of a length needed for the second category fiber connector different than the length cut by the cleaver for the first category fiber connector.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided for separating a pane (11) of a brittle material from a moving ribbon (13) of the material without contact between the newly-formed leading edge of the ribbon and the newly-formed trailing edge of the pane. The apparatus includes a pane engaging assembly (15), a transporter (29), and a connector assembly (31) which together ensure that the pane (11) and the sheet (13) do not contact each other once separation occurs. In this way, edge chipping and the resulting occurrence of surface defects on the separated pane are decreased.

Abstract: The present invention provides an optical fiber cutting device in which a scratch is formed in an outer peripheral surface of a clamped optical fiber, and the optical fiber is broken along the scratch by applying a tension force or bending stress to the optical fiber so that a cut surface becomes a mirror surface, the optical fiber cutting device comprising a collecting container capable of containing a waste fiber obtained by the cuffing, pinch rollers for conveying and collecting the waste fiber into the collecting container, and a drive mechanism for rotatingly driving the pinch rollers in response to a movement of a portion movable when cutting the optical fiber. The collecting container can be mounted and dismounted with respect to the outer container integrally formed with a device body. A slit through for setting the optical fiber is formed in the collecting container. Guide surfaces for guiding the optical fiber are formed on both outer sides of the slit.

Abstract: An improved device or tool is provided for cleaving angled ends on to at least one optical fiber (1) (FIG. 1) in which spring means (6) and co-operating pivotally mounted clamping blocks (7a, 7b) are employed to clamp and tension the optical fiber (1) with tension (T). A sharp corner edge (11) of an anvil (10) is used to locally deflect or displace the fiber (1) and bend it about the opposing sharp corner edge (12) of the clamping surface (5) of one of the clamping blocks (viz 7b) so that the fiber experiences a localized shear force. The resultant stress is a superposition of tension and shear and is directed away from the axis of the fiber (1). An acutely angled blade (13) is operable to score the fiber (1) at a point between the two opposing corners (11, 12). The fiber (1) cleaves with ends which are consistently angled at between 1° and 20° (preferably 5° to 10°) away from the perpendicular to the fiber axis.

Abstract: A dispenser for dispensing flexible web material from a center pull roll capable of accommodating different types of web material in the form of sheets separated by lines of perforation. The dispenser includes dispenser apparatus permitting the device to self-adjust to the different thicknesses, sizes and physical characteristics of different types of web material. In certain preferred embodiments, the dispenser comprises a housing, a web support within the housing and structure permitting the dispenser to self-adjust to the effective cross-sectional area of the web. The preferred dispenser structure includes elements positioned to receive the web between them. At least one of the elements is movable and is biased for displacement toward the other. Frictional force applied against the web by the elements resists pull force applied to the web by a user so that a single web sheet separates from the web along the perforation between the elements and the lead end when a user pulls on the web outside the housing.
