Abstract: An apparatus and a method for repairing nail pops in a wallboard is disclosed. The apparatus can be placed In a first state in which it acts as a cutting tool and can be used to cut a bore hole into a wallboard to separate a popped nail from the wallboard. The apparatus can also be placed in a second state in which it acts as a driving or impact tool and can be used to drive the popped nail which has been separated from the wallboard, into a framing support. The apparatus may be comprised of first and connecting members and a cutting member. The driving member may have an elongated core and may be connected by the connecting member to the cutting member. The driving member may be able to slide with respect to the connecting member to allow the apparatus to change from the first state to the second state.

  • Patent number: 7140274
Abstract: The present invention relates to an impact tool, and more particularly, to an apparatus and method for resetting a fastener that allows a force from an impact member to be transferred to the fastener in order to reset the fastener below a surface plane of a material. The apparatus comprises an impact member connected with a guide member, such that the impact member is freely slideable in relation to the guide member between a retracted position and an extended position. A user may reset the fastener by forcing the impact member from the retracted position to the extended position, where a portion of the impact member is extended beyond the guide member to come into contact with the fastener and thereby reset the fastener below the surface plane of the material.

Abstract: A marker tag for tree trunks is provided with a flat element bearing indicia adapted to clip onto an applicator hammer. A nail extends perpendicularly through the flat element and is able to slide in a passage opening in the flat element preferably subject to the action of a clamping force and only able to be slid on application of a force. After driving the nail provided with the marker tag into a living tree trunk the trunk continues to increase in diameter and accordingly pushes the marker tag along the nail so that after a certain number of years it is stripped off and drops to the ground.

Abstract: A jackhammer system for reducing the vibration and noise experienced by an operator of the jackhammer. The jackhammer system includes a housing, a chisel movably positioned within a lower neck of the housing, a pair of flywheels rotatably attached to a pair of support brackets, a ram slidably positioned within a guide channel and engageable by the flywheels to engage the chisel, a plurality of elastic members attached to the ram, and an actuator mechanically connected to the support brackets for controlling a position of the flywheels. An upper sensor and a lower sensor determine the position of the ram within the guide channel. An engaging plate supported by a plurality of compression springs receives the downwardly impact of the ram when driving the chisel downwardly. A recoil absorber having a recoil spring is attached to an upper portion of the housing for absorbing the recoil of the ram.

Abstract: A novel driver blade for use in a fastening tool having a piston is provided comprising an elongate body, a head at one end of the body for coupling to the piston, a tip at the other end of the body for impacting a fastener to drive said fastener into a workpiece, and a stiffening rib protruding from the body, the rib extending substantially along the length of the body, wherein the stamped elongate driver blade is made of annealed cold rolled spring steel. A novel method of manufacturing an elongate driver blade is also provided comprising the steps of providing cold rolled spring steel, forming an elongate blank from the cold rolled spring steel, providing a stamping die having a generally planar stamping surface with an elongate groove in the stamping surface, and stamping the blank into the stamping die with the elongate groove to form the elongate driver blade having an elongate stiffening rib.

  • Patent number: 7014088
Abstract: The present invention provides for the safe and effective installation of staples. The device has a hollow body at its upper end, a cap plate with an opening attached to the upper end of the body, and a driver shaft mounted to slide within the cap plate. A block is secured within the body at the lower end of the body remote from the cap plate. The block has two channels and a striker slides through the channels. An indentation is located in the lower end of the block to hold the arch of a staple. A driver plate slides within the body and is secured to the driver shaft on one side and to both strikers on the opposite side. A driver spring and a pair of striker springs surround the driver shaft and strikers, respectively. The channels guide the strikers while the indentation positions the staple. This causes the strikers to strike the brads of the staple simultaneously, without damaging either the staple or the brads and, most importantly, the wiring or cabling the staple secures.

  • Patent number: 6968989
Abstract: A manually operable device for driving nails into material includes a barrel having a bore into which nails can be placed or dropped and the barrel capable of reaching difficult, narrow, tight spaces that are unreachable by a hammer. Disposed within the bore is a drive rod having a flat face for striking the nail. A handle is connected to the drive rod and is manually reciprocated by the individual thereby transmitting reciprocal motion to the drive rod so that the drive rod can strike and drive the nail into the material. In operation the handle, the drive rod, and nail are axially aligned thus maximizing the striking force of the drive rod against the nail. A safety cable has one end secured to the handle and a second end secured to the barrel for attaching the device to the worker's belt or apron for easy retrieval and to prevent the device from being dropped; and the safety cable's length allows for back loading as well as front loading of nails into the barrel.

Abstract: A fastener delivery tube (1) is connected between a supply of fasteners, such as rivets (2), and the nose of a fastener setting machine. The delivery tube (1) is connected to an outlet tube (7) of a source of compressed air (3), the outlet tube (7) having an internal bore substantially equal in size to the internal bore of the delivery tube (1). The supply of fasteners is connected to the delivery tube via a feeder tube (9) and transfer gate (4). The transfer gate (4) is sealed so as to prevent leakage of air from the delivery tube (1). The arrangement reduces turbulence in the delivery tube (1) ensures that friction between the fastener (2) and the tube (1) is reduced and permits compressed air to be supplied at significantly lower pressure than has heretofore been possible.

  • Patent number: 6915936
Abstract: A tool for driving and setting nail-pin anchors and anchor bolts into concrete, the tool using the percussive action of a rotary hammer drill. The tool comprises a body member with a spring, a driver, and a ram inserted into the body member's bore. After a hole is drilled for insertion of the anchor, the masonry drill bit of the rotary hammer drill is slid inside the bore of the ram and temporarily locked to the tool. The rotary hammer drill is activated, and the drill bit turns inside the ram without affecting the body member or the anchor. Instead, the percussive force of the rotary hammer drill transfers its impact to the ram and the driver, which impacts the nail of the nail-pin anchor, or the stem of the anchor bolt, setting it into the concrete. A keyed bearing can be installed inside a sleeve of the ram in order to protect the tip of the masonry drill bit from shearing.
