When removed from the package, the strip disables a plurality of structural elements of the packaging, the elements no longer maintaining the package in three dimensions, allowing the consumer to easily flatten the packaging for accumulation and eventual recycling. When placed, the strip selectively binds to the sides of the packaging, eliminating any weakness in the packaging, and selectively releases when a consumer pulls the strip from the packaging, separating the packaging into elements but maintaining a unitary article.

Roll-over flaps on one wall at the bottom of the display opening capture tuck flaps on opposite side walls, and full overlapping top flaps folded inwardly from opposite side walls close the display opening during shipment. An outer top flap has an end extending over the roll-over flaps, and the end is free of attachment to the roll-over flaps. The top flaps are removed with the removable cover base. In one embodiment a flange extends inwardly over an edge of the display opening to keep packages from falling out.

The inner sleeve is cut so that gaps at the top of the inner sleeve form notches at the corners of the final opened container. The shorter outer sleeve rests on these notches preventing the pieces from shifting during the manufacturing process and to allow the preassembly to be folded into the final container using current machine technology.

Abstract: A shipping and display carton convertible into a cover portion and display tray is described comprised of a cover portion formed from a cover blank and a tray portion formed from a tray blank. The blanks are preferably glued together at only three glue points when the tray blank is laid flat on top of the cover blank in order to form a two-layered blank that may be erected into the present carton. The fully erected carton may be easily broken apart into an attractive display tray and a disposable/recyclable cover by gripping the cover within a grasping aperture and lifting the cover portion up to break the carton apart at the two side tabs and along the rear of the carton.
