  • Patent number: 7063280
Abstract: A broadcast spreader includes a directional control assembly that defines a pathway for granular material from the hopper to a rotating fan, resulting in the distribution of the granular material in a predetermined distribution pattern, wherein rotation of a first (or rotating) plate of the directional control assembly relative to the hopper causes a clockwise or counterclockwise shifting of the pathway for the granular material, thus altering the direction of the predetermined distribution pattern. Furthermore, the directional assembly includes a second (or shutter) plate that is secured to the first plate, the slidable movement of the second plate relative to the first plate regulating flow of granular material from the hopper to the fan.

The spreader distributes particulate material by a rotating plate which when operating, always impacts material on the deflector. The deflector and a mounting track prevent dispensing material impacting on a user of the spreader, and when the deflector is extended, also prevent dispensing material distributing to the right side of the spreader. In this way, lawns which abut a driveway or a flowerbed may have material distributed on them without also depositing material on the driveway or flowerbed. Abstract: A granular material spreader is adapted for towing behind a yard tractor. A frame upports an inverted cone which is sized to contain a supply of granular material for distribution. The bin sweep rod is carried adjacent to the inside surface of the cone, and turns a drive spring. The drive spring drives a helix, which rotates about the bin sweep rod, driving the granular material toward the narrow base of the cone. Should the helix become jammed, the drive spring snaps past the helix, rather than risk damage by forcing its movement. A bin sweep drive wheel is also driven by the revolution of the bin sweep. Movement of the wheel against the an upper portion of the outside surface of the cone moves the bin sweep rod and helix in a circular path about the inside surface of the cone. A valve at the base of the cone allows granular material to drop into a housing which defines slots about portions of its perimeter.

  • Patent number: 6149079
Abstract: A top dresser (10) includes a spinner assembly (40) removably connected by clips (44) to a cross beam (20) of the frame (12) mounting a hopper (30). The first and second sides (36) of the hopper (30) slope downwardly and inwardly to a conveyor (140) formed by sheeting (70) in the form of an endless belt having a relatively smooth outer surface. The valve (84) for the hydraulic motor (164) of the conveyor (140) is in series downstream of the valve (78) for the hydraulic motors (56) for the spinners (54) of the spinner assembly (40). Thus, it is not possible to mistakenly run the conveyor (140) without the spinners (54) operating. Therefore, the top dresser (10) is able to spread extremely minimal amounts of material evenly and without clumping or bunching.

Abstract: A portable particulate spreader comprising a container having a closed end, an open end and a storage chamber for holding particulate materials therein. A first strap handle is affixed to a side of the container adjacent the closed end. A second strap handle is pivotally affixed to same side of the container approximately midway between closed end and open end, so that a person can grasp the strap handles with both hands and toss particulate materials out of open end. The container further includes an agitation assembly for automatically agitating particulate materials within the container, so as to prevent particulate materials from sticking together. A dispensing assembly is for automatically dispensing particulate materials out of open end of the container.

  • Patent number: 6079643
Abstract: An agricultural spreader comprises a bulk material container and a pair of side by side spinners. A main cover overlies the spinners and has a feed surface surrounding a charging port for each spinner in the front inner quadrant of the spinner. The charging port in use admits air with the bulk material. A front deflector is adjacent the front inner quadrant of each spinner. An outlet cover is mounted at or near the circumference of each spinner just above the spinner. A side by side series of side deflectors is restricted exclusively to an area outward of the front outer quadrant and extends from the outlet cover into the path of the material leaving the spinner in the front outer quadrant in order to deflect the material from the spreader into the spread path. Material is delivered from the bulk material container to a location which is above the feed surface and from which the material drops onto the feed surface for feeding toward the charging ports.

  • Patent number: 5988535
Abstract: Apparatus and method for depositing salt granular materials upon a highway pavement at practical speeds. The deposition forms two narrow bands of the salt through utilization of two impeller-based mechanisms which are canted downwardly at an acute angle toward the pavement. The dump bed of trucks utilizing the apparatus is maintained in a down orientation through the utilization of a salt transport mechanism implemented as dual augers extending the length of the truck bed. Two embodiments of the apparatus are described each being self-contained and mountable upon a truck bed with relative ease. In one embodiment, a brine formation tank of generally triangular cross-sectional configuration is combined with a brine holding tank to form the sides of a V-box hopper structure. The brine formation tank is charged with salt and water to form a saturated brine which is permitted to migrate through a baffling system to the brine holding tank.

  • Patent number: 5950934
Abstract: The invention is a cement mixer sand spreader for applying a sand mixture to a roadway to enhance friction for motorized traffic passing over the roadway and to simultaneously lower a freezing temperature of the ice and/or snow on the roadway. One form of the invention includes two major components. The first is a self-propelled cement mixer vehicle having a powered barrel for rotatably storing the sand mixture, wherein the barrel defines a discharge outlet for discharging the sand mixture upon rotation of the barrel in a discharge direction. The second is a sand spreader having a hopper secured adjacent the discharge outlet of the cement mixer for receiving the sand mixture discharged out of the barrel, the sand spreader also having a powered spinner plate rotatably secured adjacent a discharge end of the hopper for spreading the sand mixture over a roadway whenever the sand mixture passes through the hopper and contacts the rotating spinner plate.

  • Patent number: 5860566
Abstract: An apparatus for dispensing granular material onto a surface including a hand-operated spreader. The spreader includes a hopper for containing the granular material with a feed opening through which the granular material is dispensed from the hopper. The apparatus further includes a storage bin for containing a quantity of the granular material. The storage bin is removably connected to the hopper so that the granular material is readily transferable between the hopper and the storage bin. A method for transferring and dispensing granular material is also disclosed where the spreader is inverted and connected to the top end of the storage bin. The assembly is then inverted for use. Thereafter, the assembly is inverted again and the spreader is disconnected from the storage bin. A separate lid covers the storage bin until it is further needed.

  • Patent number: 5795124
Abstract: A self-loading vehicle for moving cotton modules or bulk materials such as compost or cotton burrs. The vehicle utilizes a chain conveyor system on a tiltable bed. Long conveyor bars or lugs are attached horizontally to the chains to aid in gripping the material being moved. The chains lie in valleys in the bed, and are separated by ridges. The ridges and valleys help to channel loose bulk material toward the moving chains. Vanes or scrapers on the bottom of the horizontal bars assist in scraping small portions of loose bulk material out of the vehicle. A multi-position spreader on the rear of the bed may be moved down into a position to disperse bulk material, such as fertilizer or compost being spread onto an agricultural field. The spreader is moved up and out of the way for loading bulk material. The vehicle with spreader removed or positioned in its uppermost position is also utilized as a vehicle for transportation of cotton modules.
