Patent number: 4398672Abstract: An electrostatic crop spraying apparatus is arranged so that spray is ejected from the nozzle directly towards the crop, either vertically downwards or at an angle intermediate between the horizontal and the vertical. With respect to the vertical, the spray liquid is fed to the upper surface of a rotatable disc from which it is centrifugally distributed on to the inner surface of a rotatable hollow cone coaxial with the disc. The truncated apex of the cone is uppermost and the liquid is atomized on ejection from the lower circumferential edge of the cone. Charging of the spray is produced at the surface of the disc or of the cone by means of an electrode which maintains an ionized air path to the surface over a distance of a few mm. The current flow for an electrode potential in the range 15 to 30kV is a few .mu.A. A pump may be used to supply liquid to the nozzle in a pulsed flow.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 1981Date of Patent: August 16, 1983Assignee: National Research Development CorporationInventors: Arthur J. Patent number: 4275838Abstract: An apparatus for atomizing and dispensing a coating material includes a turbine having a housing and a shaft for rotatably supporting an atomizing device. The shaft includes an outer end extending from the housing for mounting the atomizing device. The shaft outer end includes a tapered portion, and the atomizing device includes a central tapered aperture for receiving the tapered portion of the shaft outer end. The housing is divided into a high-pressure side and a low-pressure side by a nozzle plate which directs the flow of compressed air from the high-pressure side across a driven wheel mounted on the shaft adjacent the nozzle plate. The high-pressure side lies between the atomizing head and the nozzle plate so that compressed air moving through the nozzle plate and the driven wheel to the low-pressure side flows away from the atomizing head.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 1979Date of Patent: June 30, 1981Assignee: Ransburg CorporationInventor: Dennis L. Patent number: 4215818Abstract: Electrostatic spraying apparatus employs a concealed electrode at a low potential (relative to that used in conventional apparatus) to form an induced charge on a thin layer of liquid. Subsequent mechanical atomization of the charged layer produces a spray of charged droplets. The thin layer is produced by centrifugally spreading an inlet flow and atomization may also be achieved by rotation. An air flow is arranged to sweep the charged droplets out of the field of the electrode and a baffle, in which the electrode is embedded, is formed to control the direction of emergence of the spray from the nozzle.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 1978Date of Patent: August 5, 1980Assignee: National Research Development CorporationInventor: Peter R. Patent number: 4214708Abstract: Electrostatic paint spray apparatus having rotary spray head with an air seal. To prevent paint or solvent from entering antifriction bearings, the shaft rotating at high speed is provided with an air seal in an intermediate zone between the bearings and the spray head. Air from a source of compressed air communicating with inlet flows through channel into groove and from there via passageways into the annular air feed chamber. Air leaves the feed chamber between depending lip and shaft, preventing the entry of paint or solvent, and operating even when the apparatus is not spraying. Air is throttled in the other direction through the air flow path to an expansion chamber and then is vented to the atmosphere via vents without contaminating the bearings.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1978Date of Patent: July 29, 1980Assignee: Air IndustrieInventor: Adrien Lacchia
