Abstract: A pulper includes a pulping chamber, a pulping mechanism, and a non-pulpas collection chamber attached to a bottom of the pulping chamber below a top of the pulping mechanism in an annular area outside of the pulping mechanism. The collection chamber includes a container with openings at first and second ends; a basket having an opening at a first end and disposed inside the container wherein at least a bottom portion of the basket includes perforations; a pipe connection located at the second end of the container; means for removing the basket from the container; and means for preventing material from entering a space between the basket and the container; wherein the first end of the container is inserted into the pulping chamber. The collection chamber does not interfere with the fluid flow around the pulping mechanism and can collect a relatively large amount of non-pulpables without requiring pulper shutdown.

Abstract: An apparatus for dehulling grass seed utilizing a vibrated housing having an elongated chamber. The interior of the chamber is accessible through openings or ports that provide a plurality of entries and exits for the processing of grass seed. Grass seed is dehulled by a housing mounted pneumatic accelerator that removes the hulls from the seeds. Hulls and seeds are then directed into the interior of the chamber wherein separation of seeds from hulls and hulls containing seeds occurs. Seeds are discharged from the chamber and the hulls containing seeds are returned to the pneumatic accelerator for repeating the dehulling process.

Abstract: A feeding device is disclosed for feeding cellulose material, such as wood chips to gas swept size reduction machines, and wherein the elimination of foreign particles from the material to be crushed is mainly achieved by pneumatic screening. The device includes a screening passage into which widely spread input material trickles slowly over a slide, having an angle of inclination .beta. which is slightly greater than a friction-angle whose value is determined from its surface roughness. The screening passage is impacted by an air current generated by a cross current fan and which is directed, along a channel, roughly tangentially onto a guiding wall. The guiding wall is arranged at an angle of inclination .gamma., selected so that the guiding wall functions as a pneumatic sorting table, and where it forms with the channel a discharge slit for the foreign particles.

  • Patent number: 5505390
Abstract: A two stage hammer mill which reduces recycled glass and its associated contaminants to small glass particles in the 100-800 grit size range and waste. The glass grinder is of light weight, modular construction, such that it may be taken apart, relocated, and restored to operation quickly and easily. A modular design also allows it to be easily cleaned and reconfigured to produce aggregate of selectable size. Located on separate rotors, installed in separate grinding chambers, the two hammer mills are spaced apart from one another and mounted within a common housing. The first stage provides a relatively coarse reduction of the material flow, which then passes into the secondary grinding chamber where the material is further ground. The design of the hammers in this hammer mill are such that they entrain a large quantity of air, accelerate it to high velocity, and drive the mixture of air and material through the system, entraining small, medium and large sized particles.

  • Patent number: 5379951
Abstract: The comminution of solid materials, such as stumps and wood waste, into particulate form is accomplished by introducing the material to be comminuted into a tub. The tub is rotated to induce a circular motion to the material. Simultaneously, a disk positioned at the bottom of the tub is rotated, preferably in the opposite direction to the tub, in a plane parallel to the tub bottom. The disk has teeth thereon that impact the material in the tub. A screening means at the bottom of the tub is sized to keep the material in the tub until it reaches a desired particle size, at which time the particles can leave the tub through the screening means and enter a collection chamber. The particles are removed from the collection chamber by being entrained in an airstream that passes adjacent an opening in the collection chamber. Preferably, the teeth in the disk are individually replaceable and are symmetric so that once one side is worn the tooth can be reversed in its mount and used again.

Abstract: An apparatus for separating fibers from a fiber aggregate comprises a hollow cylindrical apparatus housing defining therein a dissolving chamber. A partition is disposed in the internal space of the apparatus housing and forms the bottom of the dissolving chamber. The partition defines a plurality of through openings, through which fibers separated from the aggregate passes. The apparatus housing has an aggregate inlet to introduce the aggregate to be dissolved with pressurized air. The pressurized air carrying the aggregates is discharged toward the partition and forms swirl flow in the dissolving chamber. By the swirl flow of the air, the aggregate flows to collide onto the partition with an impact. This impact serves as an energy for causing dispersion or dissolving of the aggregate. The partition is preferably formed with elastically or resiliently deformable material for absorbing impact upon the collision of the aggregate thereonto so as not to cause destroying of each individual fiber.

  • Patent number: 4759507
Abstract: A series of screens for use with a size reduction machine have a tapered apertured wall formed into a frusto-conial shape, with an open wide end and a narrow closed end. All screens of a particular series have a cylindrical section, the same interior depth, outside diameter and angle of the tapered wall. Despite variations in the material wall thickness, screens of the same series are interchangeable on a size reduction machine and the gap can remain constant without any adjustment to the impeller. Further, a size reduction machine has means external to the machine providing for infinite adjustments to the gap. With previous machines, each time that a screen of a different thickness was used, it was necessary to make an adjustment to the gap in order to maintain the same gap. Further, when an adjustment to the gap is required, that is accomplished by removing the screen and impeller from the machine and inserting spacers onto the shaft.

Abstract: A media mill having a cylindrical vessel which is vertically oriented and a motor-driven rotor extending through the vessel to agitate grinding media and a liquid product within the vessel. A tubular outlet housing extends radially outward from the vessel and forms an opening through which a screen assembly is removably mounted. The screen assembly comprises a stack of adjacently positioned annular rings which are supported on a tubular carrier element. Adjacent screen elements retain the grinding media within the vessel while openings between the elements permit the milled product to flow therethrough and into an interior cavity terminating in an outlet. The screen assembly extends into the interior of the vessel and is removably secured to the outlet housing by a quick disconnect retainer means.

Abstract: A centrifugal grinding mill including a grinding chamber of substantially circular cross-section with respect to an axis of symmetry and constrained to have nutating motion about a relatively stationary axis, a support for supporting the grinding chamber, a feed passage in communication with the grinding chamber, a driving assembly for driving the grinding chamber about the relatively stationary axis, and a constraint assembly for determining the form of nutating motion of the axis symmetry of the grinding chamber. The nutating motion of the grinding chamber during operation of the grinding mill causes a grinding charge carried in the grinding chamber to dilate and perform a tumbling motion within the grinding chamber. Further, the grinding chamber has a surface configured to exert pressure on the grinding charge so as to limit its dilation and provide effective containment of the grinding charge.

This arrangement comprises particularly means for generating a force pointing away from at least one separator opening forming a passage for the product, but retaining the attritive elements within the milling container. This force affects substantially selectively only the attritive elements. According to one embodiment, this force acts upon the attritive elements in counter-direction to the direction of flow of the product. The force may either be a centrifugal force acting selectively onto the relative large mass of the attritive element or a magnetic force acting selectively upon steel balls, iron balls or the like used as attritive elements.

Abstract: A sandmill outlet screen is formed by a stack of rings which have projections and corresponding recesses stamped into them. The projections provide a gap between rings whereby flow passages between the rings are created. These passages permit the liquid being processed by the sandmill to flow out of the sandmill, but keep a grinding media in the mill. With the projections of one ring nested in the recesses of an adjacent ring, a small gap is provided. With the rings oriented to prevent nesting, a larger gap is provided. With the rings arranged so that the projections of adjacent rings abut each other, a still larger gap is obtained.
