  • Patent number: 5274984
Abstract: An improved system for making packages includes one or more packaging machines, a storage device for storing film rolls and a transporting device for transporting these film rolls to the packaging machines for loading. The packaging machines are of a type having a cantilevered film-supporting shaft for holding a film roll and sealers for longitudinally sealing overlapped side edges of a film pulled out of a film roll supported by the film-supporting shaft and horizontally sealing tubularly formed film to make bags. The film-supporting shaft extends in the forward-backward direction of the machine such that, when a plurality of these machines are arranged in a mutually side-by-side relationship, their film-supporting shafts are also in a side-by-side relationship and can be easily approached from one direction. The storage device may store the film rolls horizontally or vertically. The transporting device may be a forklift.

  • Patent number: 5269479
Abstract: A reel hub (5), an inside rod (70) of which can slide axially when acted upon by a seizing rod (82), forms part of the transfer apparatus (3). By bringing the transfer apparatus opposite the hub of a rotating reel (21, 20), and by withdrawing the inside rod from the hub, the hub is disengaged from a machine (1), the reel continuing to rotate with its hub fixed to the transfer apparatus. This apparatus can then be moved in directions situated in the plane of rotation of the reel and brought opposite another shaft of the machine in order to reattach the hub there by reversing the foregoing procedure. A rotating reel, especially one paying out a strip of cigarette paper, can thus be moved without subjecting the strip of paper to any torsion. Other operations relating to the automatic operation of the machine are also possible with the aid of the transfer apparatus.

  • Patent number: 5265999
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for handling rolls (12) of web material, the rolls being of the type having a hollow core (60) on which a length of the web is wound, the core having opposite ends (68) extending axially beyond the material. The rolls are supported on a rack (10) with their axes of rotation essentially horizontal. Devices such as a general purpose programmable robot (22) having a special tool (26, 32-114) are provided for removing rolls from the rack and placing them on a transfer stand (28, 116-174) adjacent a processing apparatus (30). The transfer stand extends toward the processing apparatus and pushes a fresh roll from its chuck (174) onto the chuck (186) of the processing apparatus.

  • Patent number: 5249757
Abstract: In a machine utilizing rolls of strip material for whatever purpose, typically a wrapping machine, the depleted rolls are replaced by new rolls taken up in succession from a magazine by a transfer unit including a gripping head that can be traversed along a guide, which in turn can be rotated about and reciprocated along the dispensing axis of the magazine. Being thus rotatable about a permanent axis, the guide can be made selectively to assume different angular positions, each coinciding with a line connecting this same axis with the axis of a respective uncoiling pivot provided by the machine.

  • Patent number: 5242127
Abstract: An apparatus for reeling or unreeling a cable, comprising an upright frame (1) and two supports (4) fastened vertically stationary to the frame, each support being provided with a vertically movable suspending arm (5) having a reel gripping pins at its lower end. To reduce the masses to be moved and to compensate for differences in the positions of the centers of a deformed reel, each stationary support (4) comprises an abutment (14) which in an uppermost position of the suspending arm (5) supports the suspending arm rigidly to the frame through the support, whereby each suspending arm (5) is supported by the stationary support by a spring (12) which in a lowered gripping position of the suspending arm allows a flexible movement of the suspending arm with respect to the support in the axial direction of the suspending arm and a horizontal swinging movement in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the reel.

  • Patent number: 5228634
Abstract: A novel roll loading mechanism is described which mechanically lifts a roll of web material into an operative position at the roll mounting of the printing press. This is accomplished by use of a dual chain conveyor having supports cantilevered from the chain, and synchronized to lift both ends of the core simultaneously to the printing press mount. This chain drive and the supports are selectively driven in a forward direction to lift the roll, and reversed to lower the roll to the initial pick-up position. A common drive shaft with sprockets to engage the chains is used to provide simultaneous and synchronized drive to the dual chain conveyors. A triangular configuration of the conveyor chain is used which presents an acute angle having its vertex above the press mount to assure secure position of the roll.

  • Patent number: 5224518
Abstract: A device for attaching an element in a frame includes a seating, a supply path via which the element to be attached is brought to the seating, and a pivotable member. In a first position of the pivotable member, a first end thereof is situated in the supply path. In a second position, the first end is situated outside the supply path and a second end of the pivotable member to move the pivotable member between its first and second positions. The first position of the pivotable element is an overcenter position in which the relative positions of the pivotable member's pivot point, the seated element, and the point of contact between the seated element and the first end of the pivotable member are arranged to retain the seated element in place within the seating. In the second position of the pivotable member, the transport device moves the element via the supply path into and out of position in the seating.
