By Calendering Patents (Class 264/175)
  • Patent number: 8262966
Abstract: Method for cooling flat plastic products, in which plasticized plastic compound is fed to a calender via a slot nozzle by means of an extruder and is rolled and calibrated to the desired shape in this calender between at least two smoothing rolls, after which the film or sheet produced in this way is fed to a chill section comprising a plurality of adjustable rolls and passes through this section until it is sufficiently cool and dimensionally stable, at least both the gap width between the rolls and the speed of the rolls being controllable by open- and/or closed-loop control. The degree of wrap of the flat plastic product around the respective roll is varied by adjusting the rolls in the chill section into a mutually offset arrangement, hence increasing or minimizing the cooling capacity.

  • Patent number: 8246882
Abstract: Materials and methods are provided for producing preform materials for impact-resistant composite materials suitable for liquid molding. Interlayers formed of nonwoven, continuous fibers, such as spunbonded, spunlaced, or mesh fabric, are introduced between non-crimped layers of unidirectional reinforcing fibers to produce a preform for use in liquid-molding processes to produce a composite member. Curing of the preform provides increased impact resistance by increasing the amount of energy required to propagate localized fractures due to impact.

  • Patent number: 8236220
Abstract: An embedded-object composite product including a solid-state mass of PET, an object embedded in the PET material mass, and a zone possessing a continuous material-density gradient in the PET material mass, with more-dense PET material residing closely adjacent the embedded object, and less-dense PET material residing more distant from that object. This product is produced effectively by non-destructively heating the PET mass from its solid state to allow it to flow as a liquid, by then pressing the object into the heated PET mass to perform object embedment and to create a declining PET-material density in the region adjacent, and progressing from adjacent, the embedded object, and by thereafter cooling the mass to re-solidify it.

Abstract: A process is provided for producing a compatibilized polymeric blend. A first thermoplastic polymer and a reactive moiety are provided to a progressive melt kneading apparatus. The reactive moiety comprises a first reactive group capable of reacting with the first thermoplastic polymer but not a second polymer and a second reactive group capable of reacting with the second polymer but not the first polymer. The first thermoplastic polymer and the reactive moiety are then melt kneaded so that the first reactive group reacts with the first thermoplastic polymer and the second reactive group is grafted to the first thermoplastic polymer, forming a molten self-compatibilizer. A molten second polymer is then provided. The molten self-compatibilizer is melt kneaded with the molten second polymer so that the second reactive group reacts with the second polymer to form a compatibilized polymeric blend. Also provided are articles formed from the compatibilized polymer blend.
