    Abstract: A biodegradable fiber that is formed from a thermoplastic composition that contains polylactic acid, a plasticizer, and a compatibilizer is provided. The compatibilizer includes a polymer that is modified with a polar compound that is compatible with the plasticizer and a non-polar component provided by the polymer backbone that is compatible with polylactic acid. Such functionalized polymers may thus stabilize each of the polymer phases and reduce plasticizer migration. By reducing the plasticizer migration, the composition may remain ductile and soft. Further, addition of the functionalized polymer may also promote improved bonding and initiate crystallization faster than conventional polylactic acid fibers. The polar compound includes an organic acid, an anhydride of an organic acid, an amide of an organic acid, or a combination thereof. Such compounds are believed to be more compatible with the generally acidic nature of the polylactic acid fibers.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a pultrusion process in which a continuous reinforcement profile is formed by canting of at least one prepreg strip composed of a fiber-reinforced plastics material. The first shaping of the profile takes place in a preform device, which is downstream of a pressure-molding device for final shaping and prehardening. The movement of the profile takes place synchronously with respect to the operating cycle of the pressure-molding device by means of a traction device. By using a cutting device, it is possible to cut the profile to length and/or to subject edges to subsequent mechanical operations to ensure that correct dimensions are maintained. A continuous (pultrusion) gusset is inserted between the prepreg strips in a radius region of the profile. The gusset has an approximately triangular cross sectional geometry and it is formed by a plurality of continuous fibers braided with one another.

    Abstract: A hollow fiber microfiltration (MF) membrane is provided. The casting solution used to make this membrane includes a fiber-forming polymer having a degree of polymerization greater than about 1000, a water-soluble polymer, an anhydride with about 2 to 12 carbon atoms, and a solvent. The membrane is formed by mixing and heating these components to form a viscous dope and then extruding the dope through an annular orifice to form a hollow fiber MF membrane. The hollow fiber membrane is then fed through a coagulation bath and two leaching baths. The membrane is especially useful for filtering liquids, such as wine and juice, so as to remove bacteria, gel, and solid particles from the liquids.

The strip is then subjected to pressure such as through a nip to at least partially embed the polymer strip into the filter pores so as to create a strong mechanical bond between the strip and the filter element. The FIOD makes it possible to prepare polyethylene thin films from LLDPE-rich LLDPE/HMW-HDPE or HMW-MDPE blends on a high stalk film line. The films have increased machine-direction (MD) tears.
