Publication number: 20110065573Abstract: A biodegradable fiber that is formed from a thermoplastic composition that contains polylactic acid, a plasticizer, and a compatibilizer is provided. The compatibilizer includes a polymer that is modified with a polar compound that is compatible with the plasticizer and a non-polar component provided by the polymer backbone that is compatible with polylactic acid. Such functionalized polymers may thus stabilize each of the polymer phases and reduce plasticizer migration. By reducing the plasticizer migration, the composition may remain ductile and soft. Further, addition of the functionalized polymer may also promote improved bonding and initiate crystallization faster than conventional polylactic acid fibers. The polar compound includes an organic acid, an anhydride of an organic acid, an amide of an organic acid, or a combination thereof. Such compounds are believed to be more compatible with the generally acidic nature of the polylactic acid fibers.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 30, 2008Publication date: March 17, 2011Inventors: Ryan J. Publication number: 20110049750Abstract: The invention relates to a pultrusion process in which a continuous reinforcement profile is formed by canting of at least one prepreg strip composed of a fiber-reinforced plastics material. The first shaping of the profile takes place in a preform device, which is downstream of a pressure-molding device for final shaping and prehardening. The movement of the profile takes place synchronously with respect to the operating cycle of the pressure-molding device by means of a traction device. By using a cutting device, it is possible to cut the profile to length and/or to subject edges to subsequent mechanical operations to ensure that correct dimensions are maintained. A continuous (pultrusion) gusset is inserted between the prepreg strips in a radius region of the profile. The gusset has an approximately triangular cross sectional geometry and it is formed by a plurality of continuous fibers braided with one another.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 2, 2007Publication date: March 3, 2011Applicant: AIRBUS OPERATIONS GMBHInventor: Michael Bechtold

Patent number: 6913786Abstract: The present invention relates to a filter element having a non-porous extrusion laminated strip formed on at least one edge and at least one side of a membrane. The strip is used to provide a means for ensuring a good bond between the filter element and the material into which it is potted. The strip is formed by the use of one or more extrusion heads that apply molten or softened polymer to one or both of the surfaces of the filter in a width and height desired. The strip is then subjected to pressure such as through a nip to at least partially embed the polymer strip into the filter pores so as to create a strong mechanical bond between the strip and the filter element. Additionally, it allows for the simultaneous formation of more than one membrane with the edge lamination at the same time.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 2004Date of Patent: July 5, 2005Assignee: Millipore CorporationInventors: Stephen Proulx, David DeCoste, Frank Lentine, Mark Carroll, Brian Pereira, George Perivolotis, John Leonard Burns, Jr.

Patent number: 6903162Abstract: A process for preparing polyethylene thin films is disclosed. The process comprises extruding a blend that comprises a linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and a high molecular weight, high density polyethylene (HMW-HDPE) or high molecular weight, medium density polyethylene (HMW-MDPE). The blend has an LLDPE/HMW-HDPE or HMW-MDPE weight ratio at least 50/50. The blend is extruded through an annular die to form a molten material tube. The molten material tube is then pulled around a flexible internal orientation device (FIOD) to form the film. The FIOD makes it possible to prepare polyethylene thin films from LLDPE-rich LLDPE/HMW-HDPE or HMW-MDPE blends on a high stalk film line. The films have increased machine-direction (MD) tears.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 2003Date of Patent: June 7, 2005Assignee: Equistar Chemicals, LPInventors: Paula L. Nygard, Donnie W. Jordy, Travis W. Patent number: 6893594Abstract: Novel window and patio door frame members are formed by an extrusion process that provide these members with at least one channel and with an outer weather resistant surface and an internal imitation wood surface together with integrated sealing strips formed in the channels for the doors, these components being fully integrated. The process is carried out by extruding a foamed profile with a channel through a first die therein having reduced dimensions where a protective shell is desired, co-extruding a plastic with said foamed profile in a second die to form a protective shell where the reduced dimensions occur, passing the co-extrusion though a calibration die, and then heating the co-extrusion at selected location where weather stripping is desired and then passing the co-extrusion through a final die where plastic weather stripping is extruded therewith and then cooling the integrated member.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2003Date of Patent: May 17, 2005Inventor: Kuei Yung Wang Chen

Patent number: 6881050Abstract: A forming apparatus to produce nonsymmetrical three-dimensional shaped products from a food extrusion device includes a vector drive controlling an induction motor through current flux control, which selectively actuates an iris diaphragm. Food product is pumped to the diaphragm, which shapes the product in accordance with settings from an encoder. The flux drive permits variable control of the diaphragm motor in segments of a 360° revolution. Alternatively, a servo drive may be used to drive a synchronous motor to operate in accordance with instructions from an encoder-shaping product from a food pump as it is forced through the diaphragm.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 2002Date of Patent: April 19, 2005Assignee: Robert Reiser + Co. Publication number: 20040245665Abstract: A method for manufacturing a long molding having an axial bend, includes: forming a long first member; performing an axial bending process for the first member, when the first member passes through a gripping portion; and extruding a heated and molten liquid resin molding material for formation of a second member through a second member molding opening of a second member extrusion die while following a bend of the first member to integrate the second member made of the molding material with the first member. The second member extrusion die has a changeable substantial opening shape of the second member molding opening. The second member having a different cross sectional shape between one part and the other part in the longitudinal direction is extruded in accordance with a change of the opening shape.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 30, 2004Publication date: December 9, 2004Applicant: TOKAI KOGYO CO., LTD.Inventors: Takayuki Yamaguchi, Katsura Sugiura

Publication number: 20040222542Abstract: The present invention is an extruded hollow thermoplastic sheeting, which is made of a pair of flat and parallel sheets spaced apart and interconnected by extending ribs of shifted patterns, e.g. of a sigmoid pattern, is disclosed in this invention. The thermoplastic sheeting of the invention has stronger tear strength and balanced physical properties as compared to hollow thermoplastic sheeting with extending ribs of straight pattern of the same specification. The present invention also provides a method for production thereof, wherein a fixing and cooling assembly is oscillated relative to a die, or vice versa, to create the ribs of shifted patterns.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 26, 2004Publication date: November 11, 2004Applicant: Inteplast Group, Ltd.Inventors: Tzy-Cherng Jan, Jyh-yao Raphael Li, Haur-Horng Yang

Patent number: 6813820Abstract: The invention is a method of forming extrudate having substantially uniform thickness. A shim is formed which has a thickness variation of less than or equal to about 0.5 mil (13 microns) total indicated runout. This shim is disposed between a first die portion having a first surface and a second die portion having a second surface. A slot is formed between the first surface and the second surface. The slot has a height dimension substantially the same as the shim thickness. Flowable material is extruded through the slot.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2001Date of Patent: November 9, 2004Assignee: 3M Innovative Properties CompanyInventors: James M.
