Patent number: 6312635Abstract: Orthopaedic wires, cables, and methods of making them are based on the discovery that, in clinical orthopaedic applications, material toughness and fatigue strength are as important or more important than ultimate tensile strength. The wires and cables of the invention have a tensile strength lower than 280 ksi, but higher than 175 ksi. The presently preferred wires and cables have a tensile strength of 210-240 ksi. The fatigue strength of the wires and cables of the invention is between six and ten times that of other high strength cables used in orthopaedic applications. One method of making the wires and cables includes annealing high tensile strength wire or cable to reduce its tensile strength and thereby increase its fatigue strength. Another method is to cold work fully annealed wire or cable to the extent of decreasing its cross section by approximately 18%.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 2000Date of Patent: November 6, 2001Assignee: Stryker Technologies CorporationInventors: Kathy K. Patent number: 6299817Abstract: A process which allows elastomeric materials of different colors, durometers and/or other material characteristics to chemically bond to one another so as to eliminate any possibility of delamination. Latex-based liquid elastomer solutions having different material characteristics are applied sequentially to a heated mold to form a series of layers making up the article, with rapid partial curing taking place between each application; the partial curing forms a skin coat over each layer which prevents intermixing of the different solutions, but which still permits a chemical bond to form during full curing of the materials. The process applies equally to dip (immersion) molded and flat molded goods. An example of the invention as it relates to flat-molded goods is an athletic shoe sole, and an example as it relates to dip-molded goods is a resilient, one piece watersports boot which can be fitted over a human foot without a zipper.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1997Date of Patent: October 9, 2001Inventor: Kevin G. The first resin is partially cured to a “B” stage to provide an air inhibited out-of-mold surface. A coating of second thermosetting resin, such as unsaturated polyester, is then applied onto the partially cured first resin and onto the mold surface. A substrate having a face is placed in contacting relationship with the second thermosetting resin film and a progressively moving compressive force is applied to the second thermosetting resin via the substrate to prevent air from becoming entrained within the second thermosetting resin. The first and second thermosetting resins cure without the second thermosetting resin imparting shear stress on the first thermosetting resin.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 3, 2001Publication date: August 9, 2001Inventor: William M. Patent number: 5260009Abstract: A method and process for computer-controlled manufacture of three-dimensional objects involves dispensing a layer of liquid, insoluble material onto a platform at predetermined locations, which then hardens. A second media, preferably water soluble, is then sprayed onto this layer to thereby encapsulate the hardened insoluble media. The uppermost surface of this encapsulant is planed, thus removing a portion of the encapsulant to expose the underlying insoluble material for new pattern deposition. After the resulting planing residue is removed, another layer of liquid, insoluble media is dispensed onto the planed surface. The insoluble media can be of any color and may vary from layer to layer, and from location within a layer to location within a layer. These steps are repeated, until the desired three-dimensional object, surrounded by a mold, is completed. At this point, the object is either heated or immersed in a solvent, thereby dissolving the mold and leaving the three-dimensional object intact.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1992Date of Patent: November 9, 1993Assignee: Texas Instruments IncorporatedInventor: Steven M. Patent number: 5234653Abstract: A method for moulding a two-colored material includes moulding a gasket such that it has a profile which is approximately the same as a profile of one of a plurality of possible corresponding regions of the inner surface of a mould. In addition, a rigid material is embedded in the gasket and the gasket is fixed to a separation wall. The gasket and the separation wall are then inserted into the mould with the gasket being aligned along the one of the plurality of possible corresponding regions of the inner surface of the mould, such that a seal between the inner surface of the mould and the separation wall is formed and first and second half-spaces are defined within the mould. The gasket is compressed against the inner surface of the mould to improve the sealing therewith and slush moulding of a layer of a first colored material within the first half-space is performed. The layer of the first colored material is consolidated and the gasket and the separation wall are removed from the mould.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1991Date of Patent: August 10, 1993Assignee: Industrie ILPEA S.p.A.Inventors: Giancarlo Buzzoni, Paolo Cittadini

Patent number: 5213854Abstract: The invention discloses a method of making articles and items with one or more surfaces with a solid stone-like appearance by filling a space with two materials, one of which is a finely cut-up material and the other of which is a filler. The method includes steps which eliminate the apparent thickness of the transparent medium through which the finely cut-up material is seen, thus enhancing the stone-like appearance.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 1990Date of Patent: May 25, 1993Inventors: Michael J. Patent number: 5192481Abstract: A method and apparatus for molding plastic articles in two colors, particularly, the bodies of magnetic tape cassettes, in which a strong bonding force is provided between the two portions without having to form a recess and projection on the joining edges of the two portions. A slide core, which is moved in and out of a primary mold cavity between the mold of the two portions of the article, is provided with a tubular passage having an opening within the primary mold cavity along edge portions of the slide core. The slide core is fully inserted into the primary mold cavity to mold the first portion, then partially withdrawn to form a seconary mold cavity in which the second portion is subsequently molded. After molding the first portion, an adhesive is injected through the tubular passage along the edges of the first portion which will join corresponding edges of the second portion to thereby firmly join the two portions.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1989Date of Patent: March 9, 1993Assignee: Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd.Inventor: Kiyoo Morita

Patent number: 5162130Abstract: A method of effecting the coloration of a restoration to be mounted on a tooth including the steps of forming a mixture of powdered dental porcelain and a photonucleable silicate glass and shaping the mixture into a dental restoration. The dental restoration is heated in an oven to its fusing temperature and allowed to cool. Selected areas of the restoration are exposed to ultra-violet light. The dental restoration is reexposed to high energy while the color of the selected areas changes.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1992Date of Patent: November 10, 1992Inventor: Gerald G. McLaughlin
