Abstract: A closure for a container, and a method for producing the same, wherein the closure includes an end panel and a plastic frame member connected together and which can be place over, or snapped onto, and then the frame member can be permanently attached and hermetically sealed to the flange of a metal, glass, plastic or composite container or can. The interface of the end panel and frame member is such as to hermetically, seal the container and yet the end panel can be readily peeled from at least a portion of the frame member for gaining access to the interior of the container. A pull tab, or ring, is provided to assist in peeling the end panel to an open position. Depending on the manner of attaching or securing the end panel to the frame member, separation or peeling can result from an adhesive failing or from a cohesive failing of the material forming the frame member, or the end panel, or the adhesive.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for extruding a plastic spacer directly on an object, in particular on the periphery of window glazing, such as automobile glazing intended to be glued into the opening of a vehicle. In particular the invention relates to properly producing the connection zone between the end and the beginning of the extruded spacer when it forms a closed loop. According to the invention the beginning of the spacer and the remainder of the loop are extruded, with the exception of the connection zone. The object is then provided with an applied anti-adhesive deposit surface that is continuous with the surface of the object. The path of the extrusion head is diverted in relation to the surface of the object so that the extrusion occurs on the applied deposit surface, proximate to and beyond the beginning of the spacer loop. Abstract: A shaped product for a frame which is extruded from a shaping die in a predetermined shape is pulled by a pulling device toward a pressing member to be passed through the pressing member. A panel which is held by an operating robot has a peripheral portion inserted into an inserting portion in the pressing member. The panel is moved so as to relatively move the pressing member with respect to the panel and along the peripheral portion thereof. The shaped product is passed through a hollow portion in the pressing member to be unified to the panel, thereby obtaining the panel with the frame wherein the frame has good appearance and the outer size of the panel with the frame is accurate.

Window gaskets may be produced by this method. These novel polyurethane/urea compositions comprise the reaction product of a (cyclo)aliphatic polyisocyanate having a viscosity of less than about 25,000 mPa.multidot.s at 25.degree. C. and a NCO functionality of 2.0 to 4.0 with an isocyanate-reactive component comprising b1) a relatively high molecular weight organic compound containing hydroxyl groups, amine groups, or mixtures thereof; and b2) a low molecular weight chain extender selected from the group consisting of diols, primary amines, secondary amines, aminoalcohols, and mixtures thereof; in the presence of a catalyst. The isocyanate and isocyanate-reactive components are selected such that the crosslinking density of the resultant polyurethane/urea composition is at least 0.3 moles/kg.

  • Patent number: 5676894
Abstract: A simple and inexpensive method and apparatus for molding a peripheral frame around a sheet or grid of thermoplastic material to produce a framed panel. A peripheral frame, preferably of structural foam or the like, is injection molded about a thermoplastic sheet or grid of panel-forming material which has been previously drawn or stretched at a temperature which orients the molecules of the polymer, i.e., below the glass transition temperature of the polymer, T.sub.g. Either during the frame molding process, or subsequent thereto, the panel-forming material is heated sufficiently to cause the material to shrink or revert toward its prestretched condition so as to tension the panel-forming material within the frame. Elastomeric sealing means are disclosed for sealing the mold during injection of the frame-forming material and locator fingers are provided to position a grid-like panel-forming material prior to initiation of the molding process.

  • Patent number: 5660771
Abstract: In order to prevent the formation of flash on a gasket used to seal a filter element when the filter element is mounted in a housing to filter a fluid, such as air for an internal combustion engine, a molding method and apparatus utilizes a pair of mold components which abut along a mold line and define a cavity for forming the gasket. As the expandable material expands to fill the cavity and form the gasket, a portion of the material adjacent the mold line is received in an annular groove in one of the mold components so that flash is not formed at the mold line. One of the mold components also has an upwardly sloping ramp surface so that air and gas move along the ramp surface as the material expands and does not become trapped in the cavity, thus avoiding defects and blemishes in the gasket due to trapped air bubbles.

  • Patent number: 5650105
Abstract: A method for making a novel, relatively low-cost loudspeaker cone assembly with an integral suspension rim. The method is for making a cone assembly wherein a cone body having an outer free edge is placed within an open female mold having an annular channel configured to form the suspension rim with the free edge of the cone exposed to the channel. A predetermined quantity of liquid plastic is deposited into the channel of the open mold. Next, the mold is substantially closed by a male die to seal the cone body adjacent its outer free edge. The liquid plastic is then cured under specific pressure and temperature conditions, over a selected interval, so that the resulting annular suspension rim is integrally impregnated into the free outer edge of the cone body and forms high density closed-cell outer skin surfaces in an integral sandwich construction with a low density closed-cell inner core, thereby providing improved flexibility, strength and durability.

Abstract: This invention concerns a device used in the process of manufacturing an automobile pane 1 equipped with a polymer frame 52 placed on the edge of the pane 1. The frame 52 is extruded onto the pane 1 which can be moved by means of a suitable support in such a way that the edge of the pane travels through a recess in an extrusion head 25 and 40. The recess of the extrusion head 40 preferably includes a U-shaped jaw 41 straddling the edge of the pane. At the front extremity of the two half-jaws of the U-shaped jaw 41 there are disposed sealing ledges or shoes 42 and 43 which are movable perpendicularly to the surfaces of the pane and which, during extrusion, bear upon the surfaces of the pane. Alternatively, the extrusion head can include a fixed jaw where the sealing ledges or shoes slideably and sealingly contact the plate.
