Abstract: A body having a large number of protrusions is aligned with a honeycomb surface having a greater number of openings, selected openings being engaged by the protrusions when the body is aligned, by positioning the body against the honeycomb surface and vibrating it until the protrusions engage. The method is of particular use in aligning flexible masks to end faces of honeycomb structures in the fabrication of solid particulate filter bodies. Particular mask and honeycomb structure geometries are suggested for automation of the process.

Abstract: A transfer film comprising a base film and a releasant layer, an ink layer and an adhesive layer laminated on the base film in this order is inserted into a cavity of an injection mold, and injection molding material is injected into the cavity. After the molded article is removed from the mold, the base film is peeled off and the ink layer is transferred to the surface of the molded article. The injection mold has a coring pin for forming an opening in the molded article and the contact surface of the coring pin to be brought into contact with the adhesive layer of the transfer film has poor adhesion to the adhesive layer so that the bond strength between the contact surface of the coring pin and the adhesive layer is lower than those between the ink layer and the releasant layer and between the releasant layer and the base film.

Abstract: A process of producing a resilient coupling in a clearance space between two, relatively-movable elements with a polymeric material introduces the polymeric material contactingly into a clearance space between the elements. A portion of the polymeric material is softened at least while in contact with the clearance-space surface for adhesion when solidified thereafter into a resilient body for the coupling, but a portion of the clearance-space surface is arranged to prevent adhesion. The combination provides coupling with guidance of the relative motion.

Abstract: A pipe elbow having a composite ceramic wear liner which is particularly adapted to resist abrasive wear from particulate material conveyed through the pipe elbow. The composite ceramic wear liner is comprised of four series of polyhedron shaped ceramic wear blocks disposed at angularly spaced locations around the circumference of the elbow flow passageway. A mixture of wear resistant particles and binder surrounds the wear bricks and provides an abrasion resistant wear surface along those portions of the pipe elbow which are less subject to abrasive wear. The pipe elbow is provided with a removable cover plate in order to access and replace the series of wear bricks located along the outside center line of the pipe elbow most subject to wear.

Abstract: A robotic base compartment has an interior locating surface. A plurality of pins extend squarely from the locating surface. The pins are located by pre-assembly machining and the extending pin surfaces are coated with a release agent. A robotic component plate, such as a gear-carrying plate, is assembled in the base compartment, with clearance slots surrounding the locating pins. After adjustably positioning the gear elements with one another by shifting the component plate, the slots are filled, for at least a portion, with a pourable hardenable material such as epoxy which is then allowed to harden. The components may thereafter be disassembled and reassembled without the loss of precision location. The assembly method obviates the need for manual drilling and reaming of pin holes at assembly and the attendant chip contamination that results therefrom.

A first glass panel is bonded to a frame member such as a vertical mullion using a sealant which adheres to the edge of the first glass panel and to the face of the first glass panel adjacent the edge. A portion of the frame is removed to expose a section of the bonded sealant and thereafter a second glass panel is positioned on the sealant such that the two glass panels are in an edge-to-edge, sealed relationship. The edge to edge abutting relationship of the panels may be accomplished without the need for caulking or exterior access to the glass panels.

One end of a hollow porcelain weathershed is fitted over the outer end of the central conductor and bushing core and seats against the mounting flange and defines an annular volume between the interior of the porcelain weathershed and the exterior of the bushing core. The bushing core is tapered down toward its end so that the annular volume within the weathershed has a tapered outer surface. The free end of the porcelain weathershed receives a bushing cap which seals the annular volume and can be bolted against the porcelain weathershed by a nut which is threaded onto the outer end of the conductor.

Abstract: Apparatus is provided for preforming automobile rooftop coverings made of flexible sheets of vinyl and the like. The flexible material is treated with a thermosetting composition and then applied to an automobile rooftop form. Pneumatic tensioning means are attached to the edges of the material at a plurality of spaced-apart points to tension it over the form to a predetermined orientation and shape while maintaining the forces on the material substantially in equilibrium. The material is heated to set the thermosetting composition. Clamping means lightly engage the material to hold it in the predetermined shape until the setting temperature is reached and then firmly engage it to form maginal flanges thereon. The shaped material is then removed from the form by a vacuum carrier and then cooled and trimmed in the carrier.A pressure-sensitive adhesive and release liner may also be applied to the material so that after it is shaped it can be directly adhesively secured to an automobile rooftop.

Abstract: Methods for selectively plugging cells of a honeycomb structure for the fabrication of solid particulate filter bodies and other applications in which plugs are first formed at one end of all of the cells of the structure and then are removed from the ends of some of the cells by moving the plugs in those cells through the structure to their opposing ends or by removing those plugs entirely from the cells and the structure. The former method suitably positions plugs to form a filter body. The latter method must be repeated at both open end faces of the honeycomb structure in order to form a filter body. The latter method may be practiced by removing the plugs with a vacuum or by pushing the plugs out or through and out the structure.
