Patent number: 8550117Abstract: A seal assembly for a fluid pressure control device includes a guide element having a sealing surface and a first guide surface. A throttling element assembly includes a throttling element positionable within a fluid flow path, the assembly defines a mating surface adapted to seal with the sealing surface, and a second guide surface sized to slidingly engage the first guide surface. A relief void is formed in at least one of the guide element and the throttling element assembly adjacent the first and second guide surfaces to receive loose solid material, to thereby prevent disruption of the seal formed between the sealing surface and the mating surface.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 2009Date of Patent: October 8, 2013Inventors: Michael W. Patent number: 7597328Abstract: A seal assembly for a reciprocating shaft includes a body having a bore and a shaft adapted to move reciprocally within the body between an extended position extending from the body and a retracted position retracted within the body. The shaft has a first seal travel area which is in contact with a first seal during axial reciprocating movement of the shaft. The shaft has a second seal travel area which is in contact with a second seal during axial reciprocating movement of the shaft. The first seal travel area and the second seal travel area are axially spaced separate and distinct areas on the shaft. Damage to the exposed portion of the first seal travel area leading to a failure of the first circumferential seal, does not lead to failure of the second circumferential seal.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 2003Date of Patent: October 6, 2009Inventors: Dean Foote, Clayton Delbridge, Scott Delbridge

Publication number: 20090066034Abstract: In a sealing system (1) between two mutually moving components (2, 3) for sealing a high pressure side (H) with respect to a low pressure side (N), a sealing configuration (9) is provided in a first annular groove (4) at the high pressure side and with one or more pressure relief elements (10a, 10b) being disposed in second annular grooves (14a, 14b) each pressure relief element (10a, 10b) having a second sealing ring (15a, 15b) with a flat pressure gradient. The hydrodynamic leak rate for each pressure relief element (10a, 10b) is chosen in such a fashion that a certain hydraulic pressure obtains in each intermediate region (Za, Zb).Type: ApplicationFiled: February 20, 2007Publication date: March 12, 2009Inventor: Holger Jordan

Patent number: 6916023Abstract: A seal includes a first seal retainer, a seal holder and a second seal retainer. A somewhat cup-shaped recess of the first seal retainer opens in a first direction of motion of a movable member against which the seal is to seal. The seal holder includes a first somewhat cuplike portion adjacent to the first seal retainer and a second somewhat cuplike portion more remote from the first seal retainer. The first somewhat cuplike portion opens in a second direction of motion opposite the first. The second somewhat cuplike portion opens in the first direction. The second seal retainer includes a first portion closer to the seal holder and a second portion more remote from the seal holder. The second somewhat cuplike portion of the seal holder receives the first portion of the second seal retainer.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 2003Date of Patent: July 12, 2005Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: Kevin L. Patent number: 6871857Abstract: Disclosed herein is a mechanical sealing device for preventing fluid leakage. The sealing device has a sealing chamber formed by a flange, a seal casing and a seal cover at a position outside a gland ring. This gland ring is used for holding the gland packings installed in a stuffing box of each of rotary and stationary sealing rings. The rotary and stationary sealing rings are provided in the sealing chamber. In this case, the rotary sealing ring is fixed to a sleeve. The stationary sealing ring comes into contact with both the sleeve and the rotary sealing ring, and is held by a slip ring biased by a spring. The spring is provided between the stationary sealing ring and the flange. Further, the sealing device has an additional sealing ring, which is provided on the inner surface of each of the gland ring and the seal cover, and comes into contact with the sleeve.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2002Date of Patent: March 29, 2005Inventor: Jong Won Kim

Patent number: 6439302Abstract: A stripper packer includes a main body having a first end and a second end. A passage extends through the main body from the first end to the second end, thereby facilitating the passage of coiled tubing through the main body when the coiled tubing is being stripped in and out of a well bore. A primary sealing element encircles the passage. A secondary sealing element encircles the passage. A piston is positioned within the main body. Movement of the piston in a first direction toward the first end of the main body applies a compressive force to the primary sealing element thereby causing the primary sealing element to expand inwardly to form a circumferential seal around the coiled tubing. Movement of the piston in a second direction toward the second end of the main body applies a compressive force to the secondary sealing element thereby causing the secondary sealing element to expand inwardly to form a circumferential seal around the coiled tubing.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 2000Date of Patent: August 27, 2002Assignee: Vanoil Equipment Inc.Inventor: Jim Wiedemann

Patent number: 6412783Abstract: A self aligning stuffing box for pump jacks includes a first tubular body having an interior bore with internal stops. A second tubular body has a first end with a concave contact surface. The second tubular body is telescopically received within the first tubular body with the concave contact surface precluded from withdrawal by the internal stops. An annular body is received within the interior bore of the first tubular body. The annular body has a convex contact surface which engages the concave contact surface of the second tubular body. A third tubular body is received within the first tubular body and exerts a compressive force upon the annular body to maintain the convex contact surface engaged with the concave contact surface of the second tubular body during relative movement.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 2000Date of Patent: July 2, 2002Inventor: Scott Finnestad

Patent number: 5873575Abstract: A packing case member or packing cup for use in a package of other similar cups for mounting on a reciprocally or rotatably movable machinery shaft to prevent gas leakage along the shaft is disclosed. The member includes a circular central opening for the shaft and provision for a conventional seal ring which slidably bears against the shaft as the shaft moves through the member. A fluid coolant passageway is formed in the member so as to extend around a majority peripheral portion of the central opening between inlet and outlet ports located at opposite end portions of the passageway. The passageway is characterized by at least three straight line segments which successively intersect one another at various angular positions around the central opening. Each straight line segment is accessible through a peripheral access opening which communicates with one end thereof for ease of cleaning debris clogging the passageway.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 1997Date of Patent: February 23, 1999Assignee: Delaware Capital Formation, Inc.Inventor: Paul C. Patent number: 5755372Abstract: A seal system for an oil well head, wherein the shaft rotates about its axis to drive a progressive cavity type pump. Primary and secondary polytetrafluoroethylene seals surround a sleeve that encircles the shaft. Pressure detectors connect to the space between the seals to detect leaks past the primary seal and signal a remote repair facility. The secondary seal assumes the sealing function while repairs are scheduled.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 1995Date of Patent: May 26, 1998Assignee: Ocean Engineering & Manufacturing, Inc.Inventor: John Alan Cimbura, Sr.
